  1. 2 of 3 in Georgia this weekend would make it a 6-4 combo Westcoast/Atlanta roadtrip. I'll take that any week of the year.
  2. Aside from the walks - which could certainly be nerves and weren't part of his MO in the minors - I think Bannister's been both a bit lucky AND unlucky at the same time. The luck part is obvious; all those baserunners, particularly leadoff runners, and still the reasonable ERA. He's gotten the outs when he's needed them but a couple of fewer at-em balls with 2outs and RiSP (see; Zambrano, Victor) and that ERA could easily double. On the other hand I'd venture that an ungodly amount of his balls-in-play have been turned into hits. It seems that early in the inning he's rarely getting the at-em balls and, instead, almost everything is turning into a hit. Theoretically at least, you've got to figure that - *just by chance* - he'll become a little more efficient at keeping runners off base while at the same time probably not survive those tough situations at the same rate when he does get in them.
  3. Yancy Street Gang wrote: A "not to DL" decision isn't really a decision. He could still be "day to day" for another week and a half. Well they kind of indicated that they're going to decide something today. The supposition is that either he'll be in the lineup tonight or they'll DL him and backdate it to the last time he played.
  4. Yeah it was Middlebrook who Phillips was really after on that Bay deal. Wall had had a good season a year or two earlier and Phillips - as he often seemed to do - stretched to find that elusive "shut-down" set-up man. Instead, he was an injured version of what we already had several of: Wendell, White, Franco. Bay was a bit of a late bloomer - possibly because he flew under the radar and wasn't as immersed in high-level baseball coaching while growing up in British Columbia - who was traded by 3 orgs (including TO US by Omar) before becoming a star. I wonder if the presence of a Moneyball-type stats nerd back then could have encouraged the powers at be to keep Bay around. Sometimes those not tabbed early on as PROSPECTS!!!! (lower-round picks, minor league FAs) aren't noticed and nutured the way they should be when they start succeeding in the minors.
  5. Well they had to drop Iriki off the 40-man and risk losing him (they didn't) just to get Feliciano onto the big club. Yeah I know that doesn't sound like much but someone like him may come in handy if/when a starter/mid-reliever goes down. As it is, John Maine is the only likely starter on the 40 who could reasonably fill-in if we need someone (like for Bannister for instance). Omar's already said he's not bringing up Milledge - at least for now. We should get a Beltran decision - to DL or not to DL - by later today. Bannister is tentatively on the slate for Tuesday but they might need to make that call by say Sunday.
  6. Yeah I mentioned the 2-fer-12 in the intro - now 3/13. I think that - plus Wagner's rep in general - was part of what Felipe was trying to say: if you're not going to pitch to Barry with HIM when are you going to pitch to him? That outside heat will probably get most hitters - although Keith was talking the other night about how it's often the easiest pitch to hit - but one theory on pitching to Barry these days might be to jam him. That knee might prevent him from "turning" on the ball as well as in past days and it might not be a coincidence that all 3 of his HRs this season are to LF (the field, not the ass who used to post here).
  7. I knew about the others but hadn't realized that Liriano also came in that deal. WOW! Now obviously he was much further from fruition at the time of the deal but most pundits had him as the best pitching prospect on the horizon this past winter and he's just about ready to go now. Twinkies have had amongst the worst pitching so far in this young season and observers are counting the days until he's moved into the rotation.
  8. I'm guessing that if he needs DL-ing (they can wait a day or 3 before deciding that) we'll see Maine 2 or 3 times thru the rotation; he'd be on sked, is starting regularly, and is on the 40-man. If they choose NOT to DL him maybe Darren Oliver gets a start if it's just a one-time deal.
  9. Pretty weird if Bannister, who looked like he was stabbed in the back of the leg while rounding 3rd, winds up not missing a start (or even only getting pushed back a bit) while Beltran, who left a game with something that seemed precautionary at the time and remains something only he can feel, misses about a dozen days (and counting). Yeah, I realize that one has to run in his job description while the other really doesn't.
  10. "Grade 1 Strain" Listed as (all with me now) "Day to Day" MAY be able to make his next start.
  11. I only caught an inning or two of it last night but that was a very strange game. And, as usual, only the Yanx can turn a 2-2 game into a 4+ hour affair. At one point the Yanx turned a few of those walks into a groundball DP even though they started from a 2nd & 3rd/1-out situation following a Damon sac bunt. - Cano on 3rd, Bubba Crosby (I think) on 2nd; - Jeter chops a bouncer to Wiggy @ 3rd - Cano has no business going but does anyway and is caught in a rundown before he's even halfway home - The D-Rays quickly tag him out after he tries almost no evasive action - Crosby was then caught miles off 2nd, possibly because he wasn't prepared for how quickly Cano was snagged ... DP. inning over despite 2 leadoff walks. Cano's turned out to be a much better hitter than a lot of people thought at this time last year but he can be a real dunderhead at times.
  12. His minor league fielding rep was good, and then his glove work in the 2nd half of last season was good enough to make me think this week is a closer to a bad streak than a trend set in stone. The throws get scattered every now & then but the arm strength is adequate enough (despite what Francesa claims) that I don't think he's headed for the other side of the diamond for quite some time now. I doubt there's any gold gloves in his near future but 3rd basemen (and/or shortstops) will usually lead the team in errors so there's not a lot that's so unusual here except for the fact that it's all come down in the last week.
  13. Some stuff on Gomez from a BA Q&A: Q: What should Met fans make of Carlos Gomez? The Mets are hyping him as having better tools than Milledge, but he seems to struggle at the plate. What's the deal? A: Matt Meyers: Some people in the org say he has better raw tools than Milledge, which means they could be better, but aren't yet. At this moment, he is faster and has a better arm than Milledge. In fact, his arm and speed might both be legitimate 70 tools (on the 20-80 scale). But the most important tool, hitting, he lags behind Lastings. The organization certainly believes in him and this spring they felt they finally saw him truly responding to instruction and applying it quickly. As a result, they decided to have him skip high A. So far, he has been OK when you consider he skipped a level. He has a ton of upside, but has a ways to go. Guys like him often fail badly (see Escobar, Alex), but can be spectacular (see Guerrero, Vlad).
  14. Cooby's dollies look stoned.
  15. Scarlet's smilies look stoned
  16. Bannister - 1 Castro - 1 Delgado - 1 Matsui - 1 Reyes - 1 Chavez - 1 Woodward - 1 Sanchez - 1 Oliver - 1 Franco - 1
  17. Tough day for closers all around. - Izzy & Robo blow leads in the same game. - Then Wagner gives it up to some clown - And now -- [HowardCosellvoice]RIGHT NOW[/Cosellvoice] -- Mariano gives up 2 runs to the DevilDogs in the 10th (his 2nd inning) and the MFY lose to TB on edit: Cordero of Texas also blows one vs Oakland
  18. Shoulda walked him, or were correct in pitching to him? Obviously this is talking about today's (Wed) game in the 9th. Recap: Runner on 2nd, 2 outs, 2 run game The case for walking him: * He's the most likely guy on the planet to tie the game * Felipe was almost certainly unable to pinch-run for him once he was on meaning he'd have a tough time scoring on a long hit * Well, he's Barry The case for pitching to him: * He was the tying run but not the winning run * Putting the tying run on brings the winning run to the plate and you could lose w/one swing of the bat * Neikro on deck - a RHB - has shown decent power in his brief ML career * We had our main guy in there, a lefty-on-lefty matchup, and a guy against whom Barry had poor numbers (2 for 12 I believe)

  20. Well that was fun!
  21. Carlos feeds the fishies with a solo shot!
  22. Brewer closer Derrick Turnbow gives up 2 in the 9th but Milw holds on for a 5-4 win, sweeping the Braves for the first time ever (of course EVER is only since 1997). Tough spell for closers lately; been following Lidge down in Houston?
  23. Johnny Dickshot wrote: I'm beginning to think there's very little difference between LoDuca and Castro, which I suppose is a good thing made better when our catcher isn't batting second. At the very least I'd like to see the catching duties slide toward a 60/40 split from the 80/20 or so it seems to be now.
  24. old original jb wrote: I find Bannister hard to watch in the way that people sometimes found John Franco hard to watch, except that with Bannister, you have to watch for more than half the game. But does he smirk?
  25. So the Pirates get a new life and bring in Robo Hernandez ... who promptly gives up a single (Eckstein), single (Luna) and GW-RBI single (of course Pujols) and the Cards win anyway.
