I know he was sked to head to Binghamton when he wrecked, I thought it was for his first go-around there but I suppose it's possible he had finished up the previous year there as well. Either way, as promising as he was, he was not yet as accomplished or highly ranked as Milledge (middle of the top 100 lists), nor as close to the bigs. So where it's possible that he blew a great career by not buckling up, it was hardly a sure thing. edit: cross-posted w/above
  3. Keep in mind that Cole had yet to play AA at the time of his death so his "ceiling" as a MLB player was still more in the realm of projection than even someone like Milledge, not to mention long-time MLers like JayPay & Preston. Nice to think that he would have had a good career but to say he would have is a bit of the 'backup quarterback' syndrome.
  4. 'All this winning is terrible' (long-timers are chuckling here)
  5. Florida suddenly only 2 games out of 3rd place with a nearly even RS/RA ratio.
  6. Yo folks, you can't just go throwing pretty pictures up all over the place and think your work is done here. THs have to be dated, numbered and tracked. June 15th was #7 for the year: Mets 5 - Phils 4 Indians 8 - Yanx 4 Marlins 3 - Braves 2 You may now proceed with as many images as you please. And I'm gonna warn folks again about fucking with the details of TH. The rules are quite clear about this and will remain so for the foreseeable future. If you want to track other occurances and call them something else: 'FABULOUS FOURSOMES' ... 'FIVE FURRY PUPPIES' or whatever else, well then be my guest ... but keep those conditions da hell out of the TH thread. IF or WHEN we finish ahead of Atlanta and/or the MFYs fall short of the playoffs in a season, THEN we can discuss either discontinuing TH or altering the criteria. Until that point ... you all know the rules!
  7. ]You mean, like the inside line of the batter's box? Y'know they oddly seemed to do away with the inside of the batter's box a few years back. The box is now a 3-sided rectangle. ]the rule is if the player doesn't attempt to move that the umpire has discretionary powers to call it a simple ball. If he's in the strike zone it can be called a strike ... I don't think I've ever seen either rule enforced though. The most famous example of an ump actually enforcing that rule was the one that extended Don Drysdale's consecutive inning scoreless streak (later broken by Hershiser). Drysdale plunked someone with the bases loaded but the ump refused to award the batter 1st base on account of his lack of mobility and he was eventually retired allowing the streak to continue. I haven't seen it called in years - but it would be the best medicine to combat those with combat armour from sticking their wing into the ball's path (yes, I'm looking at you Craig Biggio).
  8. Stole it clean. The pitcher decided to pay him little attention so Julio took off after the first glance. The throw was wide but might not have nabbed him even if good.
  9. Reyes - 1.5 Chavez - 0.9 Wright - 2.6 Trachsel - 1.9 Heilman - 1.0 Sanchez - 1.1 Wagner - 1.0
  10. Unit (5 games) & Torre (1) suspended for the throwing thingie. Not that it really means much; 5 games for a starter means you time it to start the day after he pitches and just push him back 1 day and Torre can manage by remote control anyway ... but I'm still surprised. It's not like it was some big, huge incident.
  11. I don't think one has a whole lot to do with the other. Keeping and/or sending down Milledge is a baseball decision. That the team ownership (and their deputies), who are running a corporation that in part depends on good public relations, are sensitive (at times overly so) to the hint of bad publicity is a different kettle of fishies.
  12. I think he'll be sent down once Cliff & X get back and the inter-league period is behind us ... not because he acted up too much but because that was the plan all along and - while he's played well for the most part - it's not like he set the world on fire. He'll be back, almost certainly this year and quite possibly before Sept 1 so if/when the playoff roster is made he can be eligible for it. And when he does re-appear all that "first-time" stuff will be behind him and hopefully a few lessons will have sunk in and he'll be 1-2 months worth of ABs smarter.
  13. Q: How much is a Hollandsworth? A: 3 runs when it hits a Mike Mussina pitch into "the black" in CF with two runners on 6-1 Cleveland in the 6th
  14. I mentioned the Jeter connection in my post on the bottom of the previous page. I'm not as posivitve as Silver that the Big Eunuch bought himself a free pass through next year with yesterday's buzzing. A brief reprieve maybe.
  15. Woody for Valentin isn't surprising; Marrero for Milledge somewhat is. Punishment?
  16. All of those though were 'last year of the contract' guys cut with only a partial year remaining. This Ortiz DFA, along with the Appier/Easley ones are the real nut-crunching cuts.
  17. Pelfrey update: vs. New Britain: 6 IPs, 1 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 K (W)
  18. OHernandez - 1.0 Oliver - 1.0 Feliciano - 1.0 Reyes - 1.5 Beltran - 1.5 Delgado - 1.5 Wright - 1.5 Bell - 0.5 Milledge - 0.5
  19. Y'see, that's part of my problem with Abreu defensively. He cruises back to balls (or in ... or over) rather than getting to the spot where they're going to be, and, because of that, justmisses stuff he should - or at least could - be getting to. Instead, no error is charged so there's no record to show that he played a lousy defensive RF. And the funny part about tonight is that the error on the throw really should have been on the catcher; he lost the ball on the swipe tag.
  20. Good thing we don't see anymore of those 'sit in front of the plate and sweep tag' manuvers now that Piazza is gone.
  21. A Boy Named Seo wrote: What up with Abreu? He seems to freak out when he gets close to the wall. Moreso than most other guys. Anyone recall if he smacked into one sometime? I've always thought Abreu to be a very indifferent outfielder ... or at least he can be one at times. And not just heading for the wall either. It just seems like he can lose interest at times, not charge balls well, take weird routes to fly balls, etc., last year's Gold Glove notwithstanding. Good player but something about that guy has always bugged me and I get the opinion that I wouldn't like him on my team despite all his obvious talent.
  22. Caught part of Willie's WFAN weekly chat with M&MD; nothing too earth-shattering: - Cliff: Probably Friday, maybe could PH before then - Nady: Next week - Lastings: Will play regularly until all are back and will deal with "the numbers problem" when it comes up. The other thing about Milledge is that he thinks we saw the two best throws he's ever made last week and that he doesn't rate his arm as all that special. Thinks Endy's is considerably better hence the LF/Rf alignment (and perhaps a glipse into the future) - DH: Will move it around, not planning on going w/one set guy. Good spot to get Franco, Marrero, etc., some ABs - Pedro on sked for Boston but - as things stand - will prolly miss the NYY series - Heilman needs to throw more strikes - Likes Valentin at 2nd but will try to get Woody in more often ... worrying about JV's older legs as the season goes on.
  23. metirish wrote: So FK in your opionin was Johnson giving payback for Posada or was he throwing at Perez because he hits him good? Prolly a bit of both. - It was already the 7th inning so it's not like he was going to pitch much longer anyway & the Yanx had a decent lead - So if you're going to "protect" your catcher and try and show some sack (even tho your teammates aren't going to love you anyway) you might as well buzz the guy who's taken you deep a few times
  24. Posada was plunked and then jawed about it enough on the way down to 1st to get the umps to issue warnings all around. Jeter had also been buzzed earlier but that was mostly him diving into pitches that were only semi-inside. So an inning or so later Unit throes one under the chin of Eduardo Perez (who smacks Johnson around like a rented mule) triggering the automatic ejections of both himself and his skipper.
  25. Since we were already (sorta) on the topic of Jesus Flores (and that I can't find the St. Lucie thread) I'll put this here: From Basball Prospectus: When it comes to position prospects, the Mets are awfully thin, but they entered the season with high hopes for catcher Jesus Flores, despite the 21-year-old Venezuelan's miserable 2005 that was beset by injuries and an inability to hit (.216/.250/.339) in the Sally League. This year started much of the same, as Flores didn't get his batting average above .200 for good until May 5th. When he finally did, he went on a tear. Since getting over the Mendoza line, Flores is batting .336 (39-for-118) with ten doubles and nine home runs; on the season, nearly 55% of his hits (29 of 53) have gone for extra bases. Throw in some pretty good defensive skills, and you get a real catching prospect, one who makes other teams jealous.
