  1. seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" smacked Cole Hamels around early and have a 6-1 lead in the 6th in Philly Braves get to Curt Schilling (that's several bad outings in a row for him) and grab a 6-1 lead after 5
  2. Meanwhile, Maine is working on a 2-hitter in the 7th and one of those is tainted and the other was back in the 1st inning. on edit: make that three hits and TWO of them tainted
  3. So THAT'S what a 2-out RBI hit looks like! I've only seen them from the other side for so long I forgot what one looked like.
  4. Prince actually isn't nearly as slow as his bulk would lead you to think and isn't a bad fielder from what I've seen. That may not last as he gets older but he's doing OK for now.
  5. 9 hits in just 5+ innings is a good sign. Twinkie defense is bailing Silva's butt out here.
  6. His last one was inside-the-park. That alone must have been worth the price of admission.
  7. Wow. A 2-out single to the #8 hitter on a 2-0 count?!?
  8. Oh, and Bobby Cox is one ejection short of the all-time record of John McGraw
  9. "And why do you give any credence at all to anything you hear about Omar's thinking process through the media?" I don't. I just find it funny that they treat him in that obsessive way while no other GM seems to get the same treatment (except for Billy Beane's supposed Lastings Milledge man-love of course). I've yet to hear about a Brian Cashman obsession for instance. "Isn't it at least as likely as Omar's honestly confessing his secret lustful desire as it is that he's spinning misleading misinformation so as to disguise his true plans and throw other GMs off the scent of what he really, really wants? " Sure. Where am I saying that I'm buying every word of the latest rumor du jour? I pretty much ignore most of them.
  10. Just a general purpose note for a boring Monday: - we pretty much ignored Torre winning his 2,000th game, notable only in that he became the only player w/2K hits and also 2K wins as a manager. - and also let Hoffman's 500th save slide by with barely a mention. I know, it's saves and a boring 'counting' stat, but that's one long career of saving games. - Chipper got his 2,000th hit the other day Others Coming up: - Sammy is 1 HR short of 600 - Biggio is 11 hits short of 3,000. Be interesting to see if he keeps his (more or less) full time job once he gets it considering his sub-.300 OBA this year. - Frank Thomas is 4 HRs short of 500 - Griffey, who already has 18 this year and has passed Reggie, Palmiero, and Killebrew during the season to get to 8th all-time, needs 19 to reach 600 and would pass McGwire & Frank Robinson on the way. - and then there's that Bonds guy who now needs just 7 to tie, 8 to break.
  11. Hmmm, I don't remember Moises being mentioned as one of Omar's obsessions but maybe he was. Not as high on the list as Sosa, Soriano, Javy Vazquez, and a handful of others. Mostly I just get a kick out of the view that Omar - more than any ohter GM - seems to operate like some kind of kid who can't control his emotions and will stop at nothing to get the guy he sets his sights on. And then when he passes on that guy there's a new one who he can't live without, yyybbb. Or maybe the press just assumes that if the player has a Spanish name then he's on Omar's mobile phone 'Friends and Family' plan as well as on his 'MySpace' page of bestest buddies.
  12. Whoa, check out those killer WHiPs in the pen! Whoda thunk the high one would belong to (SUNY Stonybrook's) Nathan. Odd AL team in that they don't rely on one mostly full-time DH. Four guys have DH'd at least 10 times (Cirillo, Redman, Kubel, & Tyner!) yet no one player has been used as many as 15 times, so it's not like playing at an NL park is going to sit one big guy's ass on the bench and punch a gaping hole in their lineup. Mauer's been back about a week now after missing a month.
  13. In recent interviews Omar has been giving mixed signals about this -- well not about this trade specifically (something he couldn't do) but about this type of deal: - first by saying that he's not really interested in short-term rentals or paying a high price for one - but also saying that 'anytime pitching is available I'm going to be involved' It seems all but certain that Buehrle will be dealt in the next 6 weeks (the spelling of that name could drive Yancy's PotG program to drink). He's coming off an off-year but seems to be back to his usual norm this season. Tough to figure how deep Omar is really involved. That Gammons mentioned it last night and then the radio being all over it this morning is really just the same source being repeated over again by the ESPN monster. It's not like this is closer to true because it's being talked about in two different places. Also, as seems to be the norm, Omar always seems to be talked about as having "obsessions" with certain players moreso than any other GM. And maybe he does really like Buehrle, but it should be noted that I don't think he's ever actually obtained any of the players he was said to have wet dreams over.
  14. So I should wear men's clothes?
  15. Except that many believe Young abandoned that irreverence in his later years as he began to resent the money athletes were making, the independence it gained them, and also the fact that, with the rise of television, newspaper men were no longer the dominant force in sports that they once had been. By that point, Young was increasingly taking mgmt-friendly and other "establishment" viewpoints as he railed against the new world order of free-agency (though not for him), network announcers (esp Cosell), and basically the state of the world.
  16. Gwreck wrote: Torre took Wang out so he could get a standing O from the crowd. At least, that's my theory. That's my theory too although Torre says otherwise. Claims it was the pitch count and that he had decided all along to pull him if/when it got to Delgado. Doing it for the standing O is a P.O.S. move IMO. I don't really consider it to be rubbing it in, but are we contesting a sporting event here or running a game show? Maybe an 'Applause' sign like they have in TV studios is in order (although I guess scoreboard demands to CLAP are pretty much the same thing). Gee, and we wonder why games don't get finished in under 3 hours.
  17. Schoeneweis - 0.5 Castro - 0.4 Delgado - 0.4 Valentin - 0.2 Beltran - 0.2 Feliciano - 0.4
  18. You gotta be fuckin' kidding me with the pitching change Joe !?!
  19. I actually think Lidge coming here is a possibility ... at least it has a better chance of happening than most trade rumors.
  20. Not to mention that he continues his 2007 tradition of allowing everyone he puts on base to score.
  21. DocTee wrote: someone remind Peter Gammons that Billy Wagner is not the GM I missed this one, anything interesting?
  22. Centerfield wrote: What happened to LoDuca? "contusion of the triceps" (bruised upper arm) due to a 1st inning HBP
  23. Every baserunner that Hernandez has put on tonight (except one) has scored.
  24. And we just followed it up with our first 1-2-3 inning since Wagner's 9th on Friday. Ugh!

He was just about as bad as their "C" (who got demoted right after the game) Oh, if only we could have demoted our "G" before the season! Yeah, if only we could have had more Mike Pelfrey or Chan Ho Park starts
