  1. Yeah, neutralize THIS Timmy!
  2. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Well, we now have that three-way tie for runs: Darryl 662, David 662, Jose 662. I hope Howie mentioned it on the radio. Gary's not on mike right now to do so and Buck & McCarver certainly won't have a clue.
  3. Let me check: MFY record was 2-1/2 games better than Mets' coming into Friday (it's now 1-1/2). MFY's don't play in the Big East and the Mets don't play in the Colonial. Baseball isn't college basketball. A 162-game season isn't a tournament, MFYs don't get a bye. Reputations don't win games. You have to remember that Yanqui fans (and paid flacks) DO believe that the American League is the equivalent of the Big East as compared to the mid-major (at best) that is the National League, and that their reputation can and should count for something. Like the top NCAA hoops squads they don't just want calls and breaks to go their way they expect them to. Oh yeah, and they also believe that the regular season IS merely a formality and warm-up for the real season that follows.
  4. Dickey - 3.9 O'Connor 0.7 Isringhausen - 0.9 Rodriguez - 0.9 Turner - 1.5 Murphy - 1.1 Reyes - 0.3 Martinez - 0.7

He doesn't want the paycheck to bounce.
  6. On the other hand, the hurlers have given up just one run in the last 27 innings and that only came via a 318-1/2 foot pop-up ... ... and that gives me a thought: It's entirely possible that a HR in that park wouldn't even be deep enough to be a Sac Fly in another if you had a decent enough RFer.
  7. 9-5 edge to the NL on the first day. The AL winners were: - Cleveland, who was not only losing 4-0 to Cincy in the 6th but was getting no-hit by Travis Wood. Then the ML-best seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" came back to tie and won it via a two-out bunt single in the 8th by a guy (Ezequial Cabrera) in his first ML AB - BoSox torched the Cubs in the 'Oh my God it's a replay of the 1918 World Series so we have to put all three on national TV!!!!' game. When our game ended I think they were still in the 6th - Mariners and Erik Bedard shut down the Padres ... but doesn't everyone? - Royals shut-out the Cardinals. 2 more hits for Eric Hosmer, the first of what is expected to be several guys that KC has/will call up from their deep farm system. Two weeks and 51 ABs into his career so far the kid (21) looks good (.314/.368/.588 - 7 XBHs in 16 hits) - and, as mentioned above, Anaheim thumped on Tim Hudson and the Braves
  8. Angels hang an 8-spot on Tim Hudson and they're not yet out of the 4th - so it looks like we might pick up ground on someone in the East tonight. 8-0 LAA - bottom 4
  9. I don't remember reports on Pelfrey talking about 98 (unless it was his body temperature) and they definitely were not on Humber. Besides, there's a difference between touching 98 (as these reports often say) and throwing constantly at that speed ("sitting at" in scout-speak). If the larger point is that reports on these guys are always glowing at this point ... well then you're right. After all, if scouts and evaluators didn't like them then they wouldn't be being talked about in the front half of the first round. And do remember that - even from the first round - the picks who will fail to spend even one day in the majors will outnumber those who'll become stars. The good news is that this is being talked about as an exceptionally deep draft (particularly in pitching) so the 13th pick could have the talent of a mid-top 10 in other years. The trick, of course, is to bet on the right one.
  10. BN -- We've scored just 7 runs total over the last four games GN -- We're 3-1 in that time Can't keep that up forever though so it would be nice if someone other than the red-head decides it's time to start hitting.
  11. * Phils win behind Halladay 3-2 over Texas * Marlins score twice on Sac Flys in the 8th to beat Tampa 5-3 * Baltimore celebrates last night's thumping by getting thumped again by the Nats late in the game. Nats went from not scoring for two days vs us to hanging up a 15-spot * Braves are in Anaheim btw, by aggregate record, the NL East has by far the highest win pct so far this season * Pitt jumped all over the Tiggers in the only other game that's final so far (AL teams are slowing all the games up)
  12. Three perfect innings from the pen - and definitely THE most impressive inning of the year from Frankie. With all the focus on his vesting clause and what not, he's had kind of a strange year so far. Only one blown save back in the first week and we wound up winning that game anyway. But while he's been saving everything since then he's also been giving up a ton of base-runners even while allowing very few runs and no runs that really mattered. Can't keep that up forever though. Now suddenly in the last 4 or 5 outings he's gotten a lot tighter. Gotta like him working faster tonight also.
  13. That dribbler Turner just hit towards 3rd was the same one Payton hit in the 2000 WS except that Jay's hit the grass lip and rolled fair ... and Turner ran his out!
  14. Izzy good enough? Well tonight he was.
  15. I've found my favorite O'Connor since Carroll.
  16. We definitely have our pop-up shoes on tonight.
  17. bmfc1 wrote: Many thanks to the Mets announcers for reliving the 2000 World Series. I expect this tomorrow night from FOX but not from the Mets crew. And then Cohen brings up Castillo. Is this YES? STFU. Gary has long bought into the whole Jeter "clutchness' mystique narrative.
  18. MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo projects Alex Meyer, RHP, Kentucky, as the Mets projected 1st round pick, adding that; "the parallels to [last year's #1 pick] Matt Harvey ... are almost uncanny. That one's worked out so far, so why not go down that path again?" Goldstein's description [he has him ranked 14th overall] sees him as a high risk/reward type: Pros: If you see Meyer on the right day, he looks like the best college pitcher in the country, with a mid-90s fastball that reaches 98 and a plus-plus slider that is nearly impossible to hit because of the tilt on the pitch and the angles created by his 6-foot-9 frame. Cons: If you see Meyer on a bad day, you might not take him in the first two rounds. He's disturbingly inconsistent and has a lot of trouble repeating his complex delivery, leading to wild fluctuations in his control and the quality of his slider. One scout summed him up best by saying, He's either a number one, a shutdown closer, or doesn't get out of Double-A.
  19. TransMonk wrote: Like I need more Cubs games. Or Red Sox games, for that matter. I always thought that the Subway Series was only good for one thing...me being able to lay back on the couch and watch the Mets game on TV. Well, you will get Sunday (TBS) and you might get tonight (MLBN) I'd love to know how they decide what gets shown in some of those markets; "OK, Giants & Oakland gets coverage all over the west ... plus we gotta get them into the Tallahasee/South Georgia region"
  20. Posada played 1B yesterday btw. By the end of the game when they were up by a couple of touchdowns they had Russell Martin over at 3rd.
  21. Gee - 5.2 Byrdak - 0.2 Rodriguez - 0.7 Turner - 1.2 Bay - 1.3 Tejada - 0.8 Thole - 0.6
  22. The pct of Yanqui runs this season which come off HRs has fallen to a mere 51%. Earlier in the year it was up near 65%. I'd have to go through every team to see if that's still tops (which I'm not going to do) but I'm sure it is and I bet it's not close. ML average overall is 32%; Mets are right there at 33% Only Granderson is still cranking them out at the same rate as early in the season. Russell Martin has 7 but 6 came in April 7 of Cano's 8 came in April too Teixeira hit one last night but 8 of his previous 9 were prior to May 3 Posada had 5 of his first 7 hits go over the fence but has just 1 goner since April 14 Even ARod's 2 the other night to give him 8 overall were only his 2nd & 3rd since April 23
  23. Freddie ('s dead) Garcia, AJ (Gay Jay) Burnett, and Ivan Nova (we'll just call him John New) are listed as probables for the Yanx.
  24. Time Sked + TV Alerts for non-NYers: Fri: 7:10 PM -- MLBN lists tonight's telecast as Cubs at Red Sox OR Mets & Yanx, so check your local listings for your time and area Sat: 7:10 PM -- FOX Network, presumably with Buck & McCarver. Not sure if this is going national of if they have other regional games lined up for that slot. Sun: 1:10 PM -- TBS takes this one as their national (though not exclusive) Sunday afternoon game. This is where Ron Darling hangs out on Sundays when he's not doing SNY games. It's rare that this game is NOT on ESPN's SNB but when given the option of Cubbies at Red Sox for the first time since some guy named Ruth was pitching in the WS the execs at Bristol soiled their pants just at the thought and let the NY-v-NY match stay in the daytime.
  25. Does she also make mention of when Gee's head coach removed him from the game? oh yes, I've heard ESPN-ites refer to baseball managers as head coaches - force of habit I guess.
