  1. Aggressive (and correct IMO) sendings by Hale. Either or both of those guys could have been out (Evans probably SHOULD have) but w/2outs and down by 4 in the 6th inning is no time to be sitting around praying for yet another hit to bring in held runners.
  2. metirish wrote: How many extra inning game have they played? Five I find it ominous we are making Metly references to 1977. Seems like Gary's making several per night these days. "the last time the Mets' [offense/bullpen/power] was this bad for so long a streak was back in ..."
  3. If you're going to be "gutsy" and spew stuff like that you really ought to have some specifics as to who and how. If not you're just blowing smoke. The problem (IMO) isn't stat hunting it's that they're not very good right now. The hitting stinks, they're missing their #1, #3, and #5 bats, the FA LF can't get the ball out of the infield, and the previously good bullpen can't get ME out right now.
  4. I bet he's not in the top five among AL OFers when the first voting results come out. He'll probably be trailing Carl Crawford.
  5. I've seen virtually nothing in the stadium and the only occasional mentions of the Montreal roots that come during telecasts are from trivia contests that have to go back longer than five years because there's not enough material otherwise. The other problem is that the Nats get almost no help in promoting themselves or baseball in general in that town from from the mainstream sports media contingent whose idea of sports talk is to interrupt their Redskins talk with more Redskins talk ... and that's in June.
  6. The Pirates have had 22 (and counting) base-runners (versus 12 outs) just in the 7th, 8th, & 9th innings of yesterday's game and today's. Met batters have had no base-runners and gotten just two balls out of the infield over that same span.
  7. The Pirates have Overbay, we have UnderBay.
  8. Things to do today: - Go meekly in the 7th against a no-name reliever without getting a ball out of the infield .... CHECK!!
  9. Seven hits that inning - and the only one that didn't hit a NYM glove first was the one that landed at Beltran's feet. And now that we're into middle reliever territory I'll just assume a six-up/six-down situation so we can get to the closer that much quicker.

  11. Frayed Knot wrote: They haven't hit a ball out of the infield all inning but at this point you'd be happy to get out of here only down by one or two. And when I say one or two I mean six. btw, coming into this game the Mets have been out-scored in the 7th inning 36-13 this season.
  12. They haven't hit a ball out of the infield all inning but at this point you'd be happy to get out of here only down by one or two.
  13. You gotta be fuckin' kidding me with this! The bats are giving so little margin for error that it leads you to believe that every play NOT made is going to lead to a disaster ... particularly in the late innings.
  14. There's a tendency among some fans - built in part, I think, by the more widely touted NBA & NFL drafts - that top ten picks are supposed to instantly become perennial All-Stars and failure to do constitutes dud-hood. Upton was I believe a #2 overall and Maybin a top-ten and one of the first HS players taken that year - both of which creates high expectations.
  15. Currently sitting at .353/.505/.786 and on a pace for Sixty HRs The first and last numbers in those 'slash' stats are stunning enough (a .433 IsoP) but that middle one is simply absurd for a guy who jumped up 30 points last season just to get to 130 below where he is now - and "only" 7 IWs plus 2 HBPs so far this season to pad that OBA. Last year he finished with 2 and 10 (IW & HBP)
  16. The Nats barely acknowledge the existence of the Expos.
  17. From a BA Q&A on the draft: Q -- If it's a choice between [uConn OF] George Springer or [LSU OF] Mikie Mahtook for the Mets are #13, who do you take and why? Personally, I like Springer's bat better than Mahtook, who may also not be able to stick in CF. Mahtook has the look of a 4th outfielder, while Springer may be a nice above-average bat. Thoughts? Jim Callis -- I would take Springer, though it's close. There's more risk in the bat, but I think Springer gets hammered a little unfairly, and his tools and upside are better than Mahtook's. I agree, Mahtook isn't a lock to stay in center field.
  18. Craig Biggio got thrown out at 2nd trying to stretch a single on his 3,000th hit - but I think Houston fans saw it more as a symbol of his hustling style rather than a stain on the moment. It helped that he was 5-for-5 on that day IIRC.
  19. "Rather than bore you with the details of a regression analysis that I conducted, which looks at these different factors, Ill just give you the conclusion: it suggests that the Mets are making something like 20 or 25 percent less than they should be making based on the size and wealth of the New York market, the quality of the teams play over the near- and medium-term, and the way that fans rate the stadium experience at Citi Field." Hence why Mr. Eichorn thinks $200 mil is a good investment.
  20. One year of Jeter-ing June 1, 2010 - May 31, '11 = 742 PAs; 657 ABs; 169 HIts; 25 2Bs; 3 3Bs; 7 HRs; 18 SBs; 6 CS; .257/.333/.336 Career averages thru 2009 = 746 PAs; 659 ABs; 209 Hits; 34 2Bs; 5 3Bs; 18 HRs; 24 SBs; 7 CS; .317/.388/.459 Oh yeah, He's back!!

  22. I think he's been in some sort of boot. metirish wrote: metirish wrote: Ike Davis update, not good, per various tweets, Davis needs to wear a protective boot for three weeks, add on rehab time and you can see where this goes Wtf. He was waiting for a popup to come down. Get off your ass, Ike, and play through this, you pussy. I remember Ed Coleman saying he thought he only needed a blow for a few days, fucks sake Ed. Which is why you don't take medical advice from non-doctors. When Celtics coach Glen (Doc) Rivers was asked once about the return date of one of his players, his reply to the reporter was; "You do realize that 'Doc' is just a nickname, right?"
  23. A BA piece on Taylor Guerrieri, s South Carolina HS RHP who is often being mentioned as someone who could go right around the 13th pick next week. Excepts: No prospect has seen a bigger rise in draft stock than Guerrieri, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound righthander. The odds of him ending up on campus [that would be Univ South Carolina where he has a scholarship] are looking slimmer every day. "It's the best high school arm I've ever seen," an American League scout said. "I walked into the ballpark and saw the first pitch he threw in the bullpen and I could have left. There is no chance I see this guy unless he's pitching against us in the big leagues. "Everything was above-average to plus-plus the day I saw him. It's easy, effortless. I walked out of there with my jaw dropped. This guy is unbelievable." At his best, Guerrieri ranges from 93-96 mph with his fastball and can touch 97. He mixes in an 81-83 curveball with sharp break. His fastball has plenty of life to it, sinking and running when he throws to his arm side and showing heavy sink when he goes to his glove side. Guerrieri has a unique grip for his curveball, also a plus pitch. "I tuck my middle finger under my index and that causes it to get more spin," Guerrieri said. "I was messing around with it when I was younger. I picked that up and figured out it could be a good pitch for me." Like most high school arms, Guerrieri doesn't have much need for more than a fastball-curveball combination, but he also works with a changeup and cutter. "The cutter is opposite of my fastball," Guerrieri said. "It'll run away from righties, about the speed of 89-92. It looks like a fastball coming at you, then it darts the other way. The changeup I haven't been able to use much this year. I'm looking to use that this coming year, wherever I am. Originally, I started with a circle grip and couldn't get a feel for it. So I switched to a three-finger. That's worked wonders for me."

  25. Edgy DC wrote: Esther Williams, too? Save a star for the rest of them, Ralph! Oh and there were others. Janet Leigh (IIRC) was on that list. On September 1, 1971, the Pittsburgh Pirates made baseball history by becoming the first team to have a starting lineup comprised entirely of African-Americans. Well, two Panamanians, a Cuban, a Puerto Rican, and five black Americans if you want to be precise - but we understand what you're saying here.
