I didn't rank him in the top 5 on the IF list and low on the OF because he only had 100 and change ABs as each. But when we get around to the 2011 Rankings Project his total contribution is what matters and then he could very well jump ahead of several of the guys I put him behind here.
  2. Was it, like, a 3-pitch K? Anyone remember? 5-pitches. It was a 1-2 count so there must have also been a 2-strike foul in there somewhere*. Endy then flew out (more like a pop IIRC) on the first pitch. * oe: Ball - Foul - Swinging Strike - Foul - Swinging Strike

  5. NYPost -- Potential Houston Astros owner Jim Crane is looking to cut $50 million from the purchase price of the team in exchange for the Astros switching leagues, The Post has learned. The Houston businessman has been talking to Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig about moving the team to the American League from the National League if Crane is approved as the franchises new owner. Sources told The Post that Crane -- who reached a deal in May to buy the Astros from Drayton McLane for $680 million -- is asking for a price reduction in the $50 million range to make the move. On that front, the two sides are in the ballpark on the price, although a deal is far from certain, sources said. Crane argues the move to the AL would hurt the value of the franchise because the Astros would be playing more late-night games against West Coast teams. For Seligs part, the switch would foster a rivalry between the Astros and the Texas Rangers.
  6. Word is that he's hurt - groin or something. His stats in the first two rounds weren't as bad as I thought -- he was 12 for 41 including 5 doubles + 2 BBs -- but he, like Ryan Braun, hasn't seemed to be in the middle of the action at all even when he does get his hits. Also went back on that deep fly a bit casually which allowed even Lance Berkman to tag from 1st. Didn't lead to a run, but it could have.
  7. I think it all turned on Texas when Washington had Andrus bunt with a runner on and no one out. Having Hamilton not hitting isn't doing Texas any favors either.

  12. Mel Brooks' 'History of the World - Part 1' OK, I'm actually kidding on that one, although I remember when it first came out somebody saying to me, 'I can't believe that this movie isn't even out yet and they're already planning for the sequel' All I could do was shake my head.
  13. - Mejia had TJ surgery in, what, May?, June? ... no way is he ready to throw in winter ball. We're probably talking the middle of next season before we see him on a mound for real-sies. - Buchholz is another one who hasn't been heard from since he last pitched at the end of May and the subsequent announcement that he was dealing with "personal issues". Don't know what his status is. - The first clue about Alvarez might be to find out why he only pitched 3 innings this season and when those were.
  14. StL just won a six game series where their starters went: 4.0, 4.1, 5.0, 4.1, 4.2, and 2.0 innings. Totals for the series: Starters: 24-1/3 IP; 18 ER; 36 Hits Relievers: 28-2/3 IP; 6 ER; 15 Hits Also, no [u:26l0logx]Un[/u:26l0logx]earned runs in the entire series.
  15. Goin' AL this year - been rooting against the Cards for the first two series, no reason to change now.
  16. metsguyinmichigan wrote: Well, Frankie hasn't changed much. If the rest of the Brewer team had played at least average-ish like Frankie did (3 IP - 1 run) they wouldn't have gotten their collective asses handed to them by a clearly inferior team. But starters Marcum, Greinke & Gallardo sucked, Weeks & Fielder sucked, Braun never got a hit that mattered after game 1, and their defense really sucked. Their pen in general and the run Frankie gave up last night in particular was like #28 on their problems this week.

  18. 2nd game in a row where the mgr has yanked the starter with a lead just one out short of qualifying for a win (LaRussa did it last night w/Garcia when he had a 3-run lead w/2 outs in the 5th). In a way it's kind of refreshing to see.
  19. [u:17or1sug]Game 6[/u:17or1sug] -- If Texas keeps scoring and this 3rd inning never ends (both of which seem entirely possible right now) can Detroit claim that they didn't really lose the series on account of a conclusion was never being reached?
  20. Braun has 5 RBIs in the series, but 4 of them were in the first few innings of the first game. He's gotten his hits since (8 overall - 4 for XB) but has done zippity-Duda with men on. Even Hairston's given them more ('til he let that ball shoot thru his legs last night anyway) Throw in Prince having all of 3 Ribbies while both Gallardo, Grienke & Marcum are all pitching like shit and it's like they're trying to win without their biggest guns at the same time that their 'D' is just handing the Cards runs on a platter. If it wasn't for Wolf bailing their asses out they'd already be home.
  21. Coming up in the next week on Turner Classic Movies: Tuesday, October 18, 9:30 a.m., William Bendix in The Babe Ruth Story. Never seen it. And, judging by what I've heard, don't think I want to either.

  23. [u:3vb280s8]GAME 5[/u:3vb280s8] -- Wow that's a quick hook - even for LaRussa - as Garcia is pulled up 4-1 in the top of the 5th. Of course it is Braun up as the tying run, but he's also 0-2 so far. Dotel in. ... and it works as Dotel Ks Braun with 2-on and 2-out.
  24. That Street/Geren story is nothing new. It came out earlier this year when Geren was let go as Oakland mgr.
  25. Darryl Strawberry extending his arms against Nolan Ryan is a whole lot of power, and in this case resulted an a long homer down the rightfield line. I remember that HR for how atypical a Strawberry swat it was; instead of the high almost punt-like paths to CF/LCF that were his usual fare, this one was a line-drive down the RF line that didn't get much higher than the top of the fence and got there so quickly that it could easily have wound up a single until it just snuck over the wall before ricocheting back-and-forth four or five times between the shell of the stadium where the old 341' mark had been and the back of the then "new" wall.
