  1. Question -- Name the three players who are the careers leaders for a franchise in singles, doubles, triples, and HRs Hints: -- Each player was a lifer for his franchise. None of the players are active but all are living.
  2. Wait! I thought he just got rid of his extension? Dude can't seem to make up his mind.
  3. Almost, but not quite, all filled in. The Padres & Blue Jays have apparently backed-off previous claims of Tim Stauffer & Ricky Romero starting their OD games. Orioles still up in the air ... and how 'bout that Bruce Chen! That was my first guess although I don't believe there was a military draft at that point and, of course, that time-frame was prior to our entry into WWI. A significant number of MLers went on to miss the '18 season for that reason but missing '16 & '17 in the military and then being available for '18 seems odd ... unless he was somehow dragged into the fighting via the empire of his birth.
  6. The first game Moyer wins (assuming there is one) will make him the oldest ML pitcher ever to win a game. Jack Quinn* is the guy who's going to get some posthumous publicity as he currently holds the mark at age 49 + 74 days. Moyer turned 49 last November meaning he'll start the season at approximately 49 years + 150 days * Quinn was born in 1883 exactly where you'd think an American ballplayer from that era named Quinn would be born ... that's right, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He began his career in 1909 with the Yankees, then moved on to the Braves followed by two seasons for the Federal League Baltimore Terrapins. He then somehow missed 1916 + 1917 before reappearing with the White Sox, then back to the Yanx, on to the Red Sox, the Philly A's, and then Brooklyn where he won his last game in 1932. He completed his career in 1933 with 14 games for the Cincy Reds lasting until 6 days past his 50th birthday but by then was pitching exclusively in relief and didn't win any games that season (0-1).
  7. Jamie Moyer not only makes the Rox roster but is slated to start their 2nd game. The '200 game winner' streak lives on!!
  8. Igarashi dealt to the Blue Jays for cash
  9. Saint Louee is one time zone and maybe two hours in the air. England is a much longer flight and five zones away, most of the continent is six. Plus, it's not like you're going to stay in that zone for a week the way the Mets might then go to Chicago or Houston after StL. They'll just have to turn right back around and do it all again 3 or 4 days later. There's a significant difference.
  10. Benjamin Grimm wrote: They could even do this in-season, I think. Have the two teams depart from the East Coast to London. Give them two days off on either end of the trip and they should be fine. Maybe fly Wednesday morning, play games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, then fly home and resume playing in the U.S. on Wednesday. They could possibly even play on Tuesday. The problem with two days off at either end of a Euro-series is that it takes away four of the precious few off-days those teams have which in turn means you're bumping up against the mandate of no streaks of more than 19 w/o an off day and other related kinks. A pre-season season opening series - like the just concluded Ms-As deal - would take care of the off-day snafu but getting the weather to cooperate in March anywhere other than maybe Italy would be a problem.

  12. MLB: we want to play reg season games in Europe
  13. Livan not unemployed for long, was picked up by the Braves within hours of his release so there might be some more of those starts vs Mets yet to come. Dude was an opening day starter last season, not often would you go from one of them to out of the game in just one year - even if the guy in question is 63 years old and 297 pounds.
  14. The 'change of scenery' argument seems to be becoming a catch-all one pulls out when stuck for other explanations. It's not even an argument that's exclusive to New York although I think when a big city is involved it does ramp up the odds that the C-of-S card will be played.
  15. It's Dolan's paper so maybe Isiah Thomas will get the job.
  16. A lot of that "black hole" stuff that Cliff and others talked about was a lot more true some 10-15 years ago when the town of PSL barely existed, especially for those athletes used to a late-night life-style. By moving there two decades or so ago what the Wilpons did was bet on the area growing and on that point they were correct. The problem now is no longer the town of PSL itself but that the larger area shrank baseball-wise due at first to the Dodgers abandoning Vero and then to the general exodus to Arizona. With fewer - I believe it's just 15 now - teams in the whole state of Florida even if teams were to get together and construct some kind of equitable east-coast/west-coast split you're still only going to have a half-dozen or so opponents in your general area. As for potential moves to Arizona I can't see the east coast teams joining that trend. Not just because of the added travel involved and the loss of their snow-bird spring customers, but almost all the teams are invested in the area through their FSL and/or GCL affiliate teams. The current 15/15 FLA/AZ split is probably about where things are going to settle.
  17. The trouble with trying something like this in-season (as many of the non-baseball mediots are suggesting as the "solution") is the jet lag caused by the quick turn-around time (remember Mussina crying about such stuff the year the Yanx began their season there?). At least this way the two teams have nearly a week to get re-acclimated before diving back into the season. So if they're going to play games in Japan for all the marketing reasons they seek, this particular set-up, while hardly ideal, is probably the best. btw, when they do re-open it'll be with a two game series of Oakland at Seattle. 7 of the first 10 games for these two teams are against each other.
  18. Meanwhile, the 45 y/o (in late April) Omar Vizquel is NOT joining those being told that he can no longer play the children's game as he will head north with the Blue Jays as their utility infielder.
  19. What were they running this morning at 5AM, primary coverage?

  21. M's get two in the top of the 11th to take the win and tack on further proof (as if anyone needed any) that 'Moneyball' doesn't work. One down, 2,429 to go.
  22. No, that wasn't from the book. As for its inclusion in the movie, I guess it was just the scout's way of telling young Billy that one should seize the opportunity while it's available. 'We want you as our centerfielder NOW and therefore you should get started on that NOW cuz who knows if that opportunity is still going to be there when you get out of college'. And, as we know, following that logic haunted him later on.

  24. Even the 'Extra Innings' package - which usually starts both the first and second halves of the season with a free week of games for everyone - hasn't kicked in to pick up this game.
  25. There comes a time when we get told that we can no longer play the children's game Billy. Some of us get told at eighteen, some at forty, but we all get told.
