Ceetar wrote: Why does ESPN's ticker report all deals as "According to ESPN and 'media sources'" It's their way of saying that they were beaten to the story (or, at best, that they reported it no earlier than 956 other sources) but still get to credit themselves with being among the ones cited as the source of this material.
  2. Ashie62 wrote: Didnt the Mets just draft a SS in the first round? Yes, but neither he (Gavin Cecchini) nor this potential Cuban signee are going to be ready to man the SS position at CitiField this year.
  3. Well then, as Belushi used to say: WELL EXCUUUUUUUUUUUUSE ME!!
  4. I can't believe Seattle blinked on this! I was sure when reports started circulating this morning that not only had Cano/JZ played their way out of the best offer they were going to see but had also lowered the incentive for the Yanx to go any higher. IOW, for the want of an extra $15 mil I would have guessed that they were going to "lose" about $50. BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! as Steve Martin used to say. Just two years after the Pujols contract--one that was given to a better player, a younger (at the time) player, in a bigger market--has proven to be well over-sold WITH STILL 80% OF IT STILL TO GO Seattle goes right down that same rabbit hole.
  5. MLB 25-Man Roster: Brown, Duda, Granderson, Young, Young. . The outfield is getting Grander and Younger by the minute!!
  6. Awkward 14 y/o is not happy to be roped into spending summer vacation on a kind of trial run as a potential blended family as he and his mom (Toni Colette) join her asshat of a boyfriend (Steve Carrell) and his daughter at his beach home. But despite having no interest trying to fit in with the adults, who in general are even more juvenile than him, or with potential step-sis and other older teens who think him too dorky for words, he manages to meet up with some outsiders who help him gain confidence as the vacation drags on. Allison Janney, Amanda Peete, Maya Rundolph, Sam Rockford, AnnaSophie Robb co-star.
  7. JUAN SIGNS!! Sent the MoFo into a panic that one did. Some dork named Hammer was behind that one.
  8. Mariners are meeting with Cano and are reportedly willing to go [u:2eqrepq3]Ten years[/u:2eqrepq3] for the already 31 y/o FA (some teams never learn, do they?) with amounts variously reported at $200 mil or higher. "If that [a rumored 9 yrs @ $225 mil] is what Seattle is offering, he's gone" - says a Yanqui official acc to Wally Mathews
  9. BoSox continue their seeming fascination with other teams' closers (Andrew Bailey, Joel Hanrahan) by striking a two-year deal with Edward Mujica. Mujica was the 2013 closer for StL before falling completely apart in September* to the point of not only losing the closer's job but falling into near total diis-use and was almost left off the post-season roster. One would certainly think that Uehara starts the year as the closer while Mujica and others set-up. * Mujica in 2013: - Runs allowed in April thru August: 11 on 42 hits in 57.1 IP - Runs allowed in September: 9 on 18 hits in 7.1 IPs
  10. btw, the projected MFY starting OF for next season: Ellsbury, Suzuki & Gardner, [u:1s7n3gau]combined for[/u:1s7n3gau] 24 HRs last year and just 37 over the previous two seasons. Part of that was due to injury-shortened seasons but that's still 37 HRs in over 2,500 combined ABs - and the plurality of both the ABs & HRs were from Ichiro who: a) just turned 40, and is most likely to lose playing time in those cases where they want to get power into the lineup via Soriano and/or Wells. So much for the Bronx Bombers.
  11. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I think that name goes back further than that. He may have been involved in some of the R.A. Dickey rumors from last winter. I think you're thinking of Wil (yes, that's with one L) Myers, a then up and coming KC OFer who was the subject of Dickey speculation until he wound up being traded last off-season to the Rays in a multi-player deal. I've never heard of (this) Will Smtih, a 24 y/o LHP as it turns out, until just now.
  12. Boston made, at best, a weak effort to retain Ellsbury (see Reyes & Mets) and were pretty much resigned to seeing him go (see: Bradley, Jackie). That he wound up w/the Yanx certainly wasn't part of their plan but they don't really have any control over that except to over-pay him themselves which they clearly didn't want to do. IOW, the Yanx' signing of Ellsbury didn't really subtract him from Boston as he was being subtracted one way or another. Plus the whole idea of signing someone so as to weaken your opponent is, in general, a really bad idea that harkens back to the days when George would go on the warpath.
  13. Boston has prospect Jackie Bradley Jr. tagged as their potential CF of the future so if they're signing Granderson is likely to be as a corner OF to pair with Victorino. This past season the opposite corner was handled by a combination of Daniel Nava, Jonny Gomes, & Mike Carp Bradley was up for a brief time in 2013 to not-much success, but he's a 23 y/o former 1st round draft pick who's a glove and a speedster with little left to prove in the minors so I believe the job is pretty much his to lose going into ST.
  14. If a player CAN play shortstop there's no way that his teams along the way (amateur, minor league, or otherwise) would opt to NOT play him at SS.
  15. The latest (acc to Martino at the Snooze): - talks between NYM & Granderson have been "heating up" since late Tuesday and that there is "increasing optimism" that he will wind up in Queens - that any deal would almost certainly have to include a 4th year at minimum as, first the Byrd contract (2 x $8), and then the Ellsbury one (7 x ~$22) have raised the stakes - the outside competition seems to be coming from Seattle & Boston
  16. He's 23 y/o (at least according to that article) which makes him approx two years older than the average college-age draft pick. But if he were a college kid coming into the draft with that kind of resume it wouldn't be at all unusual to draft him and see how things progress. Cuban players are kind of in a separate category all by themselves because of the unknown factor but if this guy is destined for the minors then the price tag isn't likely to be that high so maybe it's best to just think of this as an extra draft pick. Hell, even Chapman and Puig and Cepedes required some minor league time and those deals involved tens of millions.
  17. So because Bay failed we're to assume that all future FA signings will follow the same path, or is there something in particular here that connects these two specific players?
  18. I feel like this is where the Austrian Emperor should step in and say: 'His name, it has ... too many letters'
  19. If Murphy gets dealt (and he very well might) it'll be because he's the better trade bait and will bring back something to fill another hole; I don't see him being dealt simply to hand EY Jr. the 2B job. For all of Murph's faults, he out-hit Young by 30 points and had a greater pct of hits go for XBs.
  20. Plus $21 million worth of 35 y/o Vernon Wells on the bench/LF/DH/PH Angels are paying a chunk of that ($28 of the $42 over two seasons) , but still ...
  21. We should acknowledge one-time NYM Tony Clark getting named as permanent replacement for recently deceased MLBPA union president Michael Weiner. First ex-player to hold this position since Bob Feller in the early days of attempted unionization.
  22. Granderson for four is a better idea than Beltran for three [as is Granderson x 3 > Beltran x 2] I liked Beltran while he was here as much as anyone and more than many, but he's a full four years older with injuries that are slowing him down and not going away. For all of Granderson's missed time last season, both stints were as the result of HBPs on the hand & wrist. Not that those are good things, but they are kind of flukey injuries and ones not likely to repeat (his HBPs/year have been in single digits all but one season).
  23. Pierzynski (the 2nd best Polish player ever out of Bridgehampton, LI) to the BoSox on a one-year deal. Saltalamacchia to the Marlins for three
  24. Ceetar wrote: our condition being "having one already" or "not likely to score enough runs to close games"? More the former than the latter. But there's also the concept of having a limited budget with other holes to fill. And then there's the whole thing about the erratic nature of closers, the relatively short span of greatness even the good ones tend to have, the marginal difference between the edge a supposedly "great" one will give you as compared to just a decent one and the difficulty in predicting which will be which, and so on. As I talked about towards the end of the year-long Adventures in Closerland thread, a number of what turned out to be the top closers in 2013 didn't even start out the year with that job in the same way that some of the ones who started there didn't finish. And that a team even keeping the same closer for more than a year or two at a time is more the exception than the rule.
  25. seawolf17 wrote: I'm just saying that it wouldn't kill Joe Nathan to sign with the Mets, JUST ONCE. Sure, except that if I had to recommend to Sandy where NOT to spend major money this off-season it would be in the closer's spot. Buying closers on the open market is a questionable strategy in most cases (although the Tigers may be in that spot) and especially so in our condition right now.
