  1. I've noticed some post-season writers swooning over Jon Jay: intangibility and plays-the-game-the-right-way, and not-the-most-athletically-gifted-but-gets-the-most-out-of-his-ability and gets-more-range-out-of-his-smarts-than-his-legs and makes-hard-plays-look-easy and all that jazz. It was like they were desperately searching for their new good-but-not-great biracial angel. In an earlier game, Reynolds and Verducci were dispensing with the intangibles part and just flat out calling him a great defensive player. My only comment about that was that they must have missed last year's playoffs & WS cuz Jay was pretty bad with the glove there. The Cards were concerned enough about it all to go out and trade w/the Angels for Peter Bourjos with the idea of pushing Jay to RF. In the end it was Bourjos's total lack of hitting which moved Jay back to CF. Not that Jay's a bad player or anything, but he's far from the dominant CF gloveman that some are trying to sell.
  2. Nice to see the Cards having to eat the downside of big ol' Matt Adams last night (twice!) instead of just basking in his upside the way they've been doing in the playoffs so far. No official errors in Wednesday's game (and only 2 over the first four games) but between the two misplays by Adams, the non-catch by Jay*, and a couple of spots where I think they've missed Yadier, there haven't seen many supposed 'Cardinal Way' moments to be envied. * and who among us who was watching last night didn't immediately think to themselves that Lagares would have snagged both those 1st inning doubles?
  3. So do you suppose that Kelvin Herrera reliever on the Royals--with the very prominent HERRERA inked over his forearm in what looks like maybe six inch high, multi-colored letters--uses his tat as legal identification whenever he forgets his wallet?

  5. I'm not sure Flores is a better hitter than Murph either - at least not initially. More HR pop (in a small sample) and a decent minor lg resume, but fewer doubles, less speed, neither one walks all that much The biggest problem with Murphy is his status as a player one year removed from FA. Even setting aside the questions about the Wilpon's finances for now, the big Matzoh ball out there is still the question as to how smart it would be to commit to Muffy on a multi-year deal starting when he turns 31 (~OD - 2016) That essentially leads you with the choices of: - seeing if he wants to sign now for a long-ish term contract and approx how much that would entail - keeping him for 2015 at whatever the going rate for a single year is, then either doing the same dance next year or risk losing him for nothing - dealing him now to fill holes elsewhere while we've got (younger/cheaper) others who can play his position (whether for better or worse still to be determined) I find it tough to make arguments for choices A or B here
  6. [fimg=250]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BlV6ZRvCUAAchMi.jpg[/fimg] Looks like KC fans have gone from believing that George Brett was the Lord to seeing that he merely hangs with the Lorde.
  7. Damn ... This is a helluva run they're on!
  8. I would have liked to hear Shields on that hidden mike thing yell out something like 'SUCK IT JETER' on that Mustakas over-the-rail catch.
  9. Dropped into a Cardinals forum that I hadn't poked my head into in many years. What I remembered from it was that, far from being examples of the self-proclaimed 'BFiB', they were a nasty crew and especially so towards their own players and managers. Well, nothing much has changed: lots of hate towards both Choate & Matheny and it's obvious that such opinions were formed far earlier than this afternoon's game.

  11. Yeah, nice throw by Randy Choke on that bunt. (watched it all via tape delay so I just caught up to the end about 20 minutes ago).
  12. Saw some guy on the news the other day with his bald dome adorned to be a replica of Tom Brady's football helmet. The team emblem was where it was supposed to be, the logos in the right place, the number, etc. (didn't check to see if it had the green sticker to designate that Brady is one of the two on-field guys allowed to have a radio receiver in his helmet). What a fuckin' dope!
  13. The Puma Sez - Mets are pursuing recently fired NYY hitting coach Kevin Long, although several other teams are as well including Arizona where Long is apparently tight with the just-hired Chip Hale Also mentioned: - Abreu probably not a HC candidate for this year - Teufel has indicated he's not interested and will remain as 3B coach - no indication that the club has reached out to Edgardo Alfonzo - AAA hitter coach George Greer remains a possibility - Rico Brogna has an interest but it's unclear whether that interest goes both ways And on a semi-related note: the shortening of fences looks like it will proceed--as per Sandy's directive--although no specifics at of yet.

  16. From what I understand about her show 'Girls' everyone who's watched it has already had a look. Personally, I'll pass.

Gwreck wrote: It's "worked out" in the sense that they are in the playoffs (a reasonable measure of success for any team) but it's still pretty early to declare a winner on the Shields-Myers deal. And the making the playoffs part was the real prize here, especially given KC's last three decades. Trades really shouldn't be looked in terms of 'winning or losing' so much as whether it accomplished the goal for the team(s) making them. In this case, the Royals shipped out a pitcher they were going to lose in the near future and wound up with a promising arm plus two full time/controllable players at tough to fill spots, then stapled that promising arm to a promising bat and flipped them for two more ready-to-use arms. That doesn't mean that the deal didn't also work out for Milwaukee (who went to the playoffs with Greinke & Betancourt) or that it still won't for Tampa with Myers and/or Odorizzi playing a big role, only that it all sure looks good right now for KC.
  18. One would have to say that this series of moves has worked out well for the Royals. It was four off-seasons ago (Dec 2010) that KC swapped Zack Greinke (along with Yunesky Betancourt - no longer playing) to Milwaukee. In return they received: * Lorenzo Cain - then a 24 y/o former 17th round draft pick with 150 ML ABs under his belt, now the .300-hitting starting CF with a lot of glove * Alcides Escobar - then in his first full ML season, now the 5th year starting SS * Jake Odorizzi - then a 20 y/o 1st round draft pick pitching in the low-A Midwest Lg Odorizzi, who was thought by many to be the key to the deal, was then flipped two years later (w/others, most notably Will Myers) to TB for pitchers James Shields & Wade Davis, arguably their top starter and reliever this season Nice work, KC.
  19. Except that, Wong, unlike fellow shorty Eckstein, is/was a fairly highly-touted 1st round draft pick (22nd overall) who had 12 HRs this year in only 400 ABs - he actually hit HRs this season at a better clip than did their big ol' 1st baseman Matt Adams (15 in 500+). The Cards' leading HR hitter this season turns out to be SS Peralta (21).

Their starter suxx, their star catcher gets hurt, their closer blows the 9th inning lead ... and they still win the game with three outs to spare. And this is, remember, a team with a RS/RA ratio just a hair better than the Mets this season (+16 vs +11) with considerably fewer HRs (105 vs 125), but still managed to finish with a record 11 games better and is now 3 wins from going to the World Series due, in large part, to their sudden prowess at hitting HRs
  21. Ken Rosenthal likes the fact that he gets to interview someone close to his own size with Wong.
  22. ... and he succeeds in blowing it: K - 1B - 1B - Line-out - WP which scores a run from 2nd - ? 1st & 3rd, 2 out, Posey up, go-ahead run out on 3rd
  23. Rosenthal trying really hard to blow the save opp.

Doesn't look like it seeing as how 'Big FOX' isn't even touching most of the remaining NLCS games leaving FS1 as the location for the game itself. So unless they're throwing the round table discussion to FS2 (which I don't think half the country even gets) there's no room for the overflow. damn, that sucks, Burkhardt was the perfect host of this round table chat , what I really liked about it was they weren't shoving the advanced stats down your throat like look how smart we are, it was just easy conversation with KB leading them , Nitcowski is very knowledgeable, Bub Black and some great insight , Kapler not the lunk head I would have guessed he was and Neyer of course helping to explain it all.....didn't know he has quite the lisp . I suppose it's possible that they'd do a night or two of this during the WS when the games will definitely all be on the big FOX channel and FS1 could be available for the overflow.
