  1. Speedy Dee Gordon is new at 2nd base too for Miami this season. A 4 year vet of the LA Dodgers (although only one complete season there) he'll run (led NL in triples and SB last season) and slap the ball around (just 4 HRs in 1,200+ ABs) and a 50 point jump in his BA in 2014 leads to hopes that the 27 y/o son of former ML pitcher Tom Gordon is on the verge of coming into his own as a premier 2nd baseman. I've heard he's less than you'd want as a defensive 2B although I claim no personal knowledge here. Was acquired by Miami this past December via a seven-player (plus cash) deal where the biggest piece going back the other way was minor league pitching prospect Andrew Heaney. In addition to his pops, brother Nick is a SS drafted 5th overall by Minnesota last June.
  2. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: This team has already absorbed the loss of a starting pitcher and a closer and you can't even tell. Starter, closer, the guy slated to be the main LHR (Edgin), still waiting on rehabs from the previous closer and a set-up man (Parnell & Black), and now the 3Bman. No one hit (assuming Wright's injury is relatively short) should be critical enough to torpedo a whole club, but that's a lot to absorb considering it's been from just ST plus the first nine games. Heavy division component to the early part of the season -- they neither leave the eastern time zone nor play a non-East (NL or AL) team until mid-May -- also makes this early part of the calendar most interesting than in most years.
  3. deGrom - 4.0 CTorres - 0.4 Blevins - 0.6 Familia - 0.6 Cuddyer - 1.3 d'Arnaud - 0.8 Lagares - 1.0 Murphy - 1.3
  4. The narrative that 'our hitters get thrown at but our pitchers rarely retaliate' is one that fans everywhere embrace as something that applies to their team in particular.
  5. And we have the return of Creepy Sun Baby
  6. TheOldMole wrote: Those were my answers too, and I caught that Ralph was one. Was Stan the other? But if they could knight Americans, he wouldn't be Sir Kiner, he'd be Sir Ralph. The answers were Stan & Pee Wee. Reese was about 30 runs scored ahead of Jackie but Stan had around 250 of both of them.

  8. Utley: 36 y/o (37 in December) The contract, as discussed above, is just for this year except does vest year by year for the next two if he reaches 500 ABs And, last night's show notwithstanding, those were his first HRs since last August (vs the Mets naturally - Wheeler to be specific) which represented the longest HR-less streak of his career. Not a great time to be buying - although the situation might look different come July In the meantime, re: Wright's DL time, I'd like to see Cuddyer get some time at 3B clearing room for some starts in the OF for Nieuwy & M'berry
  9. Moving chronologically, the next non-East team we hit beyond the ones already grabbed are the Pirates in late May so I'll sign up for them. [u:3is0oivb]Fman99[/u:3is0oivb] - New York Yankees [u:3is0oivb]d'Kong76[/u:3is0oivb] - Tampa Bay Rays [u:3is0oivb]G-Fafif[/u:3is0oivb] - Milwaukee Brewers [u:3is0oivb]Gwreck[/u:3is0oivb] - St. Louis Cardinals [u:3is0oivb]MetsGuyInMich[/u:3is0oivb] - Chicago Cubs [u:3is0oivb]TransMonk[/u:3is0oivb] - Boston Red Sox [u:3is0oivb]Frayed Knot[/u:3is0oivb] - Pittsburgh Pirates
  10. I'm constantly amazed that fastballs to the hands don't break bones every single time!
  11. Colon - 3.8 Cuddyer - 1.9 Duda - 1.9 Murphy - 0.8 Blevins - 0.8 Granderson - 0.4 Familia - 0.4
  12. Niese - 1.0 Goeddel - 0.6 Wright - 3.0 Mayberry - 1.5 Granderson - 0.5 Blevins - 0.2 Gilmartin - 0.2
  13. Back and forth game Nats @ Boston tonight where the Nats lost due to a 2 HBP + 3 errors 7th inning including another one by Ian Desmond which started the whole frame. 3 runs/0 hits for the Sox that inning in what became an 8-7 final. Desmond did have 3 hits in this game but that just evens him out at 6 hits & 6 errors on the season. Also another NOT good outing by Strasberg.
  14. The only problem with Recker's positioning at 3B is that he wasn't playing High enough on Francouer's AB.

  16. You just have zero CAHNfidence when Kirk is up in those left-on-left situations.

  18. Manager Sandberg to his SS after that lame bunt attempt: "Galvis, son. Oh Galvis, son."
  19. Same cast of characters as last night for the Phillies - although in a slightly different order with Ben Revere moved down This will be David Buchanan's 4th start vs the Mets (all in his rookie year of 2014). He's 0-2 plus an ND although it's not like NYM bats have totally smacked him around. 5/29/14 - 4 run on 7 hits in 6.2 IP 8/11 - 3 run on 4 hits in 6.0 8/29 - 1 Run on just 4 hits over 6.0 (ND) He did have a rough go of it in his one start this season vs Boston: 6 runs on 7 hits over 3 IP
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I wasn't familiar with this "roll call" thing. It sounds pretty stupid. And if it's a Yankee thing, then it is definitely stupid. It's been going on at YS for about 20 years or so. In the top of the 1st, when the home guys are out in the field, each starting player has his name chanted out until said player (not always the pitcher or catcher) turns around between pitches and acknowledges his shout-out via a quick wave. This continues in succession through each of the starting nine. It's certainly an all right tradition and one that appears to have sprouted out organically by regular fans (even if it's by those meatheads in the RF bleachers who like sporting their beer muscles whenever possible) but it's THEIR tradition and not one that should be copied by NYM fans. Makes it kind of tough for Met fans to complain about the Wilpon's stealing the 'Sweet Caroline' thing or other such monkey-see/monkey-do stuff if they are going to be just as un-original.
  21. Harvey - 4.0 CTorres - 0.4 Familia - 0.2 Wright - 1.4 Granderson - 1.2 d'Arnaud - 1.4 Cuddyer - 1.4
  22. Lefty Specialist wrote: It's guaranteed that Jeter winds up on the top four. This is doofy fan voting, not an actual analysis of who's the best. I caught part of a heated argument (one I assume was sparked by the introduction of this 'competition') between some WFAN caller and Mike Francesa a few days ago where the caller was arguing for the superiority of Jeter's career over Mantle's. Problem was that the caller's entire argument was based around Jeter having the higher lifetime BA. Tough to make Francesa sound like the reasonable one in such a head-to-head but this history & perspective challenged caller managed to do just that.
  23. Nymr83 wrote: get the triple happiness thread ready! Mets beat the Philthies 2-0 and meanwhile the RedSox are laying some hurt on Jordan Zimmerman. From what I heard, while Zimmermann wasn't good by any means, it was more the Nats' defense again failing them. Only one official error but the brief discussion I heard of it it sounded like one of those deals where there was one error but also 3 mistakes, 2 goofs, 4 fuck-ups, plus a handful of boo-boos. Harper & Taylor let a bases-loaded fly fall between them which was immediately followed by a similar deal on an infield grounder between SS & 3rd. The one error was another throwing E on Desmond. The starters have been (mostly) as good as advertised for DC, but their hitting, defense, & bullpen have collectively sucked, with only the 'O' having an excuse of missing players (and Werth is back today).
  24. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: btw, should the Utley error play have been a DP? Should have been to the point of being one of the easier ones in the history of baseball. It was essentially a hard one-bouncer right at him. Nice read by Cuddyer to go to 3B on it though.
  25. Pretty deep liner to CF by Asche but, as ChiSox announcer Hawk Harrelson is fond of saying; "We got a man there"
