  1. Need a hero here. If it winds up being Conforto leading off then he just might become a legend in his first week. I'm betting though that someone sets it up for Plawecki.
  2. Edgy MD wrote: I was thinking Conforto would get whistled for not trying to evade the pitch. I wouldn't mind seeing that called every once in a while, but far more blatant non-moves are let go all the time so there's no way they were going to start with that one. Not without a mini-riot anyway.
  3. Cueto apparently on the verge of being a Royal. Code not yet cracked to make it official or know the price.
  4. I wonder if Greinke's streak caused Gonzalez to throw home on that? Normally the play there is to 2nd even if the chances for a DP were low. But the odds of getting the out at home there are also pretty chance-y and early in the game you want an out. (and as I'm typing Gary brings up the same point)
  5. Deron Johnson was one of the coaches (in addition to Howard who was already mentioned in the player category). I have no memory of Ben Johnson except that his name makes me think that he was the designated runner until he got busted for steroids.
  6. Padres reportedly seeking one "high end" prospect in return for Justin Upton and "possibly two", a price which reportedly has the Mets backing off. [sez: MLB.com] Upton, hitting .248 w/15 HRs, has the pro-rated portion of his $14.5mil contract remaining for this season at which point he can be a FA. Any team acquiring him this year can NOT extend a qualifying offer to him for the purposes of recouping a pick in next year's amateur draft.
  7. 'Chapeau' (as the French would say) to Juan Uribe.
  8. Early impression: The first thing that strikes me is that I haven't seen him swing at a bad pitch yet. Took hacks at some borderline offerings w/2 strikes but those were protection type swings which he fought off nicely and has yet to go fishing for garbage (and isn't THAT a nice change?). The plate discipline and controlled swing are what the scouting reports have said about him and, small sample warning so far, he's been exactly that.
  9. Twins go up 5-0 vs the Yanx but cough up 8 unanswered and trail 8-5 heading to bottom 9. Most of the damage was done by [u:1ogh88oq]Three[/u:1ogh88oq] Alex Rodriguez HRs. Dude turns 40 in 2 days.
  10. Y'know when that Ravin guy is next going to see the mound for the Dodgers? ... Nevermore, that's when.
  11. Dilson's going to need a new number if/when he gets the September call-up cuz Uribe done stole his.
  12. We have a Gen-U-Wine laffer on our hands.
  13. Y'know this thread made it occur to me that if you're a fan with a common name like Johnson or Smith (or increasingly these days Hernandez or Perez) the thing to do would be to buy your team's jersey with your same-name player on it only with velcro numbers. That way you could easily replace the digits when your team trades/signs a new player with your name and always have the thing era-appropriate without having to shell out for a new jersey every couple of years.
  14. We went crazy on Lee. Which isn't as good as going crazy on Ryu would have been, but he's on the DL.
  15. Would be weird (but entirely possible) if that's his last start as a Phillie.
  16. Keith's cryptic reference to the 18 inning game from last week was in response to a Phil Mushnick (NY Post) column from a couple days ago about how Keith makes it apparent on occasion that he'd rather be anywhere other than doing a game.
  17. Kelly Johnson gets the honor of being #1,001 beating Uribe to the punch.
  18. Edgy MD wrote: Frayed Knot wrote: and that's some authentic frontier gibberish! Bob Can we get a little more? The judges are asking. OK, there was one Bob Johnson and then there was the other Bob Johnson
  19. Not that I have any intention of giving them back, but that was a boat-load of cheap-ass hits in that 1st inning.
  20. and that's some authentic frontier gibberish! Bob
  21. Flores deserves to sit more than Tejada right now. Uribe is pretty much confined to 3B these days so that probably means Murphy back to 2B and Wilmer to the bench. Or maybe my two years long prediction of a Murphy trade is finally going to go through. I see Kelly Johnson spelling guys at 2B & LF mostly. No reason to send Conforto down. Now that he's here he'll play near everyday unless and until he looks like he's in over his head.
  22. Muno for sure, and probably Campbell.
  23. So I had a funny feeling while I was posting this that Lucas might have been at a high-water mark and could well slip below this lofty 300/400/500 threshold where he spent much of April & May. But I never dreamed he'd crash and burn so badly. Since June 1st I've got Lucas at approx .166/.258/.269. He has 3 HRs and 7 doubles (along with 53 Ks) in two months. I think Justin Turner nearly reached those figures by the 5th inning tonight. And we thought it was Cuddyer who was killing the offense (well he is, but he's not the only or even worst offender).
  24. Someone today was talking about d'Arnaud maybe by as early as the middle of next week. Between him & Johnson & Uribe this should be a better offense as we enter August. And, who knows, maybe Dabid shows up later in the month. Doesn't necessarily mean it'll be a Good offense, but it should be a better one. Now all we have to do is put out an APB for Lucas Duda and we might be in business.
