  5. Head for Hagerstown now...... ] Farm report: Dreamer alert General manager Omar Minaya promises to exhaust every option in trying to improve the Mets, and after this announcement yesterday by the Class-A Hagerstown (Md.) Suns, you have to believe him. The Mets are hosting open tryouts at the Suns' Municipal Stadium on July 20, with the chance to be selected to sign a professional contract. As the release states, "Individuals who desire to try out should be at the ballpark by no later than 9 a.m. to register and be prepared to possibly endure a challenging workout beginning at approximately 10 a.m. Entrants should come dressed and ready to play and will need to enter the ballpark at the stadium's main gates at the Hagerstown Trust Plaza. Participants should also bring their own appropriate baseball gear and equipment. The tryout session is free for participants and open to the public." So stop making excuses, grab your glove and get down to Hagerstown.

  20. Lo Duca on yapping at Rodriguez after he crossed home-plate Sunday. ] "Aw, it was nothing against Alex," Lo Duca insisted last night. "It's water under the bridge. I just don't like losing. 22. From the NYT... ] INSIDE PITCH Pedro Martnez was scheduled to throw practice pitches yesterday but chose not to, reducing the already minimal chance that he will pitch before the All-Star Game break. The Mets will decide Martnez's status after he throws in the bullpen today, and they will almost certainly place him on the disabled list to clear space for Mike Pelfrey to make his major league debut this weekend against the Florida Marlins. General Manager Omar Minaya and Willie Randolph continued to say that Pelfrey was "in the mix" with Jos Lima and Darren Oliver for starts tomorrow and one game of Saturday's doubleheader. John Maine will start the other game. "If he's ready to come up, bring him in," Randolph said of Pelfrey. "I love young talent."
