  6. ] Mets pursue Takahashi to add pitching depth BY DAVID LENNON | david.lennon@newsday.com November 12, 2008 In their search for more pitching depth, the Mets could be among a number of teams pursuing Ken Takahashi, a lefthander from the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. Takahashi is 40 years old, according to Japaneseballplayers.com Takahashi, who filed for free agency this week, went 8-5 with a 3.50 ERA in 21 games for the Carp last season. He throws a fastball, slider and shuuto, which resembles a screwball.

  16. 5: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May) Hugh Jackmans back for an X-Men prequel set 17 years before the action of the first movie. The film traces the early career of Logan, the indestructible mutant who will one day be X-Man Wolverine. Cameos from future X-Men and the chance to see how Logan acquired his deadly claws and curious hairdo give the film a geek power that will set the internet buzzing ahead of the premiere. It will be interesting to see how this performs after the third X-Men movie was seen by many to be something of a mis-step in the X-franchise. 4: Watchmen (March) Alan Moores superlative comic book finally, against the authors will, reaches the big screen. Theres little doubt for anyone whos read the original comic that this movie will be a huge triumph. We know the ending has been amended but every scene thats been seen so far is slavishly faithful to Dave Gibbonss original drawings, with just a few costume tweaks to make Nite Owl look a little less ridiculous and Silk Spectre a little bit sexier. How Watchmen will play to audiences who havent already been seduced by Moores vision of a parallel universe Cold War showdown between the members of a disbanded hero team remains to be seen. You can be sure, however, that every comic geek in the western world will see this film, and either rave about it or rail against it on the internet for evermore. 22. I meant a Duck ] Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, who last spring publicly angled for the Mets' managing job when it began to appear that Willie Randolph might be fired, Friday was named skipper of the Long Island Ducks. Ducks principal owner Frank Boulton announced that Carter, 54, will be introduced at a Monday news conference at the team's Central Islip ballpark, making Carter the fourth manager in the Ducks' nine-year history. He will replace former major-league pitcher Dave LaPoint, who managed the team the past two seasons. The Ducks said LaPoint will remain with the organization. The team's coaching staff will be named later. Carter managed the Orange County (Calif.) Flyers to the championship of the Golden Baseball League this past season. It was the second consecutive year Carter guided a minor-league team to a title, following a Florida State League crown for the Mets' St. Lucie farm team in 2007. Carter
  23. sorry, back on the bench ]MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Brewers hired former New York Mets manager Willie Randolph as bench coach on Saturday. The 54-year Randolph was fired as the Mets manager on June 17. His career record was 302-253 and he led New York to the playoffs in 2006. His .544 winning percentage ranks second to Davey Johnson (.588) in Mets history. "We are very pleased to add Willie to the organization as he brings recent National League expertise and success to our coaching staff," general manager Doug Melvin said. "His reputation as a player is a quality that will be valuable in his teaching and coaching of our talented young team. Willie is a professional both on and off the field." Ken Macha was hired Oct. 30 as the manager, taking over from Dale Sveum following the team's first postseason appearance since 1982.
  24. We are dealing with probabilities on this one. I like the Rey answer because it would seem so improbable it must be right.
