  1. Few things were more predictable than Frankies insurance run....
  2. Sounds like fun , what's your active roster seawolf?
  3. nutin funnir than dis
  4. Interesting read , makes me wonder about a guy like Francoeur , that balance between telling him to be patient and letting his natural aggressiveness come through.
  5. I didn't mean to imply that I thought he would be in trouble , just that I doubt he likes having crap like that brought up in a trail for a goon like Gotti.
  6. Keith's wonderful life might not be so wonderful now with his name getting dragged in to the Gotti trial. Met great caught up in Jr. case He didn't take the stand, but one of the biggest names in New York Met history loomed large in Manhattan federal court yesterday as the fourth trial of John "Junior" Gotti got under way. A chronic gambler who once worked for the Mets testified that he pretended to place bets for Keith Hernandez while racking up a massive debt to a Gotti-run gambling ring in 1984. "I lied," said Joseph Deluca, 49, a former assistant equipment manager for the team. "I had to assure them the bets were going in for someone who could pay them." Growing increasingly desperate as his losses grew to $32,000, Deluca ultimately decided to take a chance and approach the perennial Gold Glove first baseman for a loan. "I had a good rapport with him," Deluca said about Hernandez. The former MVP took pity and agreed to loan Deluca $7,000, which the gambler promptly blew in Atlantic City. The move infuriated Gotti's right-hand man, John Alite, who broke Deluca's nose and then brought the mob scion to the gambler's house to meet with his parents, Deluca testified. A spokeswoman for Hernandez declined comment. After three previous racketeering trials ended with hung juries, prosecutors took a different tack yesterday by depicting Gotti, 45, as a money-hungry mobster who once carried out acts of violence with glee. A witness to a March 1983 barroom brawl in which Gotti allegedly stabbed a rival to death said Junior had the gall to go back inside the Silver Fox bar and taunt his dying victim with a Porky Pig impression. "Th-th-th-that's all, folks!" Gotti said as he swung open the doors and waved to the shocked crowd, according to barfly Kenneth Seidel, 50. "For those 10 seconds, it got very, very quiet. Everybody kind of froze," Seidel said. Seidel said victim Danny Silva had been cut open from his belly to his sternum. "It was deep. It was wide. You could pretty much look . . . and see his insides," Seidel said. At the start of the trial day, 10 jurors asked to be excused in notes to Manhattan federal Judge Kevin Castel, who refused all their requests. Two said they were deathly afraid. "I think I will be very nervous and intimidated for this. Had a hard time sleeping at night," one juror wrote. In opening statements, Assistant US Attorney Elie Honig told the jury Gotti left "a trail of victims in his wake." Attorney Charles Carnesi repeated Gotti's defense that he left the mob in 1999 and therefore can't be convicted of racketeering under a five-year statute of limitations. kati.cornell@nypost.com
  7. Reading the article this struck me .... Reyes admitted he might finally relent and undergo surgery for what has been diagnosed as a torn hamstring tendon. I'm sure everyone from Jose to Minaya and the rest are involved in the decisions but that line from Rubin that Reyes might relent to surgery has me thinking that they want him to have it and he has yet to relent.
  8. From SI Chapman's career record is 24-21 and he twice led the Serie Nacional, Cuba's professional league, in strikeouts. Despite the mediocre record, the money Chapman will command is expected to exceed the $32 million signing bonus the New York Yankees paid Cuban right-hander Jose Contreras, who was 31 when he joined the Yankees in 2002. Andorra's lack of income tax means Chapman will save money in his new homeland, Mejia says. I think I would be mildly surprised if he got that kind of money the same article has a scout projecting Chapman as a middle reliever rather than a starter , article also notes that with a weak FA pool that will drive up the price.
  9. Never heard of him but his Wikipedia opens with a startling declaration Albertin Aroldis Chapman de la Cruz (born February 28, 1988) is a Cuban baseball pitcher. Chapman has been called one of the "three great pitchers in the world right now who are not in the majors,"[1] along with Yu Darvish and Stephen Strasburg, who was drafted first in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. As noted elsewhere if it's on the web then it must be true.....
  10. According to reports online Pedro should take his rotation turn come Friday....apparently he pulled a neck muscle swinging at an 0-2 pitch and oulled himself after throwing a warmup pitch when he took the mound. Pedro lost the 100th game of his career that night .
  11. On Reyes Jerry Manuel is happy Carlos Beltran is back, even if on a limited schedule, because the Mets' manager doesn't have to wait until spring training to evaluate him. That's not the case with Jose Reyes, who hasn't played since May 20 and might need offseason surgery to repair a torn hamstring. "As we sit here today, I would have to say yes, [Reyes] would be a question [for spring training]," Manuel said Sunday. "Because I haven't seen him run, I haven't seen all those things, so that's still a question for me. What I would like to do is know that he's healthy, that he's 100 percent. That's the whole key for me . . . Spring training becomes a very important time for him versus what it has been in the last few years." Manuel said Reyes' injury - of all the Mets have suffered this season - is the most troubling to him. "Just the length of time for what we thought was [a minor injury]," he said. "That was probably our toughest one in terms of the uncertainty of it and the expectation. We'd say, 'Well, at least I know I'll have him after the [All-Star] break. At least I know I'll have him in August. At least I know I can get to see him in September.' " Now he'll get to see him in February. He hopes. Beltran went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the Mets' 6-2 win over the Nationals. He took Saturday off after playing Friday night.
  12. My question regarding Murphy is this With hard work in the off season can he get better around the bag ? OK so the answer is of course he can.....but do you think he will ? I have my doubts that Murphy will ever get much better than what he has shown.
  13. I like Olbermann plenty. I would agree with him on a lot of things. I did think Edge's comment was rather clever too.
  14. Saw a line this morning....Mets have lost 22 of the last 29...yikes
  15. This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by MLB Advanced Media. oh please
  16. Yeah, and a smug snarking comtemptuous comic newsman has to be special journalistically if he has no real history of news outside of sports. Well said Sir
  17. A Mets game with an unbelievable finish...not in the Mets favor of course....
  18. Cool stats Grim , Jerry really needs to try and win every game now. Even if it means pulling the starter in the third. taking the piss here
  19. Manuel sat Pagan for a few games , some might say finally but he did sit him.
  20. The Onion www.theonion.com/content/news/derek_jet ... for_having
  21. I think there is to much being made of Manuel needing to sit players that make mistakes , he needs to field a team guys.
  22. I'm officially rooting for the Giants , I'd tune in to see Tim Lincecum in the post season and Zito and the big guy at third.
  23. Is this the young girl? , can't see it at work. The Evening News with Brian Williams had a segment on this yesterday and even had a reporter at their house, I was a bit shocked at the coverage it got but it is cool to see a story like this get National attention. Doofus reporter tried to re-create the moment by handing her a ball and she of course threw it away.
  24. I could live with that Grim , and from what I remember of a FA list floating around here recently there ain't much out there, unless Prince can be had I suppose.
  25. That News article described Davis as a "slick left-handed fielder with a strong arm" , sounds like a plan to me.
