  1. From the NYT..]INSIDE PITCHOmar Minaya said yesterday that Kazuo Matsui's left-knee bruise was more severe than first believed and was being treated like a fracture. Matsui, who initially played after sustaining the injury, went on the disabled list June 21 and could be out for another month or more. Minaya did not set a timetable for Matsui's return, but he added that the Mets do not need to acquire another second baseman. It will now be even more difficult to trade Matsui, who is in Port St. Lucie, Fla., taking light swings. ... First baseman Doug Mientkiewicz hit a two-run homer in a rehabilitation game yesterday and is expected to rejoin the Mets by the weekend. Because Mientkiewicz is batting .219, Willie Randolph would not guarantee that he would play every day. ... The Mets are considering skipping Kazuhisa Ishii's turn in the rotation Tuesday. Durham wouldn't be a terrible idea.
  2. thanks for the link WP, that clears that up, I saw it and was wondering why FOX would show it, from the article.]But their ruse was easily discovered once you realized that Fox would never hold its camera on an unknown website and read the URL on air.exactly.
  3. David Cone gets a lot of ink.....]I don't know if he was a "sex addict". Everything I know about him is from personal experience, and I don't read articles about players, so I'm no Cone expert, but I'm sure there are a million out there discussing his sexual escapades. I loved when he was with the Yanks, and he was always a source of amusement when there was nothig else to do, but I'm of no use when it comes to info on him. Sorry! [code:1]jeez[/code:1]
  4. Again not Mets history but a Met connection..]On July 15, 1973, Nolan Ryan pitches his second no-hitter of the season, as the California Angels defeat the Detroit Tigers, 6-0. In the sixth inning, Tigers slugger Norm Cash comes to the plate with a piano leg, instead of a bat. Cash, who had struck out his first two times up, will pop out after exchanging the piano leg for a regulation bat.A piano leg,WTF?

I've heard a Cameron to Boston rumorIs that to play CF?, I can see Damon playing for the MFY's next season.
  6. Very enjoyable read, from the little I have read about Mr. Koo he seems to be very popular with his teammates.]Koo plays Texas Hold'em with fellow relievers even though he only knows how to bluff.]In the Mets' bullpen, relief pitcher Heath Bell often sits near Koo's interpreter so that he can relay jokes and learn some Korean expletives. Whenever Koo sees what he believes to be a bad call and yells, "That's a strike" in English, his teammates howl their approval.
  7. Is Boyer a Boyer? You know, of the Alba, MO, Ken-Clete-'n'-Cloyd Boyers?I looked but found nothing on that, did find this interview though.http://braves.scout.com/2/387215.html
  8. Great job, Glavine and Smoltz had hoped for the chance to face each other,P - Blaine Boyer -- 24, A reliever drafted out of (all together now) a Georgia HS Called up in mid-June, the RHP has a 1.46 ERA in 14 games/12.1 IPs. Great name.

If I'm Byrnes I'm pissed, but I'm happy he's not going to the Bronx.Nats did good I think, how did the Dollars work on that deal?
  11. Adam Rubin thinks the Zambrano deal is working, in his mid-season report card he gave Zam a B+...Victor Zambrano: B+At 4-7 with a 3.58 ERA while Scott Kazmir is 3-7, 4.59. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/story/327514p-279950c.html
  12. Very good SK, do we know what game he appeared in?
  13. Cooby you're right, The National Anthem sounded great last night.
  14. I tuned out when they started playing God save the fucking Queen, I knew it was going to be a shit night after that.
  15. San Diego - Steve Reed/Jason Bay
  16. Mike was playing a lot of air guitar and banging on the drum cymbals every now and then, him and Damon looked like they enjoyed it a lot, at the end Mike did his best Eddie Van Halen going up and down the neck of the guitar to finish the song.
  17. ]I think it would be more entertaining to watch clips from the original Home Run Derby show that was shown in the early 60's. At least those guys weren't juiced...From Newsday's Media critic, Steve Zipay.http://www.newsday.com/sports/columnists/ny-spzip124340612jul12,0,6897504.column?coll=ny-sports-columnists]ESPN Classic yesterday afternoon aired tapes of the Home Run Derby since 1996. Why not mix in some of the 26 episodes of the original Home Run Derby between 1959 and 1961 featuring former Tiger Al Kaline? I'd even settle for Dick Stuart, who once beat Wally Post, 12-11, or something. For those who don't remember, that head-to-head series was staged at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, with the winner receiving $2,000 and advancing and the loser getting $1,000. FYI: Hank Aaron finished with the most money, $13,500; Mickey Mantle won $10,000 and Jackie Jensen got $8,500 ...
  18. ]It's that Braves boy. Atlanta." "Yes, New has mentioned some problems with Atlanta. He's come home a couple of times looking like he got into a fight. We'll ask him what's wrong and he'll mutter something about Braves taking his lunch money but then he clams up." "I see. His record does show a history of bad experiences with Atlanta. I wish I had known sooner because it's a problem New is going to have deal with sooner than later." "We know. We've tried. We just can't seem to get him to focus." brilliant, good read.
  19. On July 11, 1985, Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros becomes the first pitcher in history to record 4,000 strikeouts. Ryan notches the milestone when he fans New York Mets outfielder Danny Heep on three pitches in the sixth inning. This is not Met history but I have to post it..]On July 11, 1961, San Francisco Giants pitcher Stu Miller is literally blown off the mound during the All-Star Game at Candlestick Park. In the ninth inning, high winds cause the 165-pound Miller to lose his balance. Umpires call a balk, allowing the tying run to score. The National League eventually wins, 5-4, in 10 innings.http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/history/index.htmnow that would have been fun to see.
  20. Swap out Zambrano for Ishii Rotblatt and I'd do that deal.
  21. I like your thinking seawolf.]5) Glavine, to my thinking, remains the most likely trade candidate. Texas is in a pennant race, but has had little in the way of starting pitching, and the one guy who has brought it for them this year is beating on cameramen. Glavine, of coures has some way in if and where he goes. Glavine has indicated his desire to stay in the North East if traded, any chance Boston takes him?
  22. ]Reminiscent of SidMets prospect Petit sneaky fast, prompts images of FernandezBY KEN DAVIDOFFSTAFF CORRESPONDENTJuly 11, 2005DETROIT -- Yusmeiro Petit threw just nine pitches yesterday, and the fastest registered at 91 mph on the Comerica Park radar gun. Yet the Mets' top pitching prospect cruised through his one inning of work, generating a trio of pop flies against three of his fellow highly regarded youngsters. It's that success, those fly balls and a noticeable gut that explain why Baseball America has referred to the 20-year-old as "a righthanded Sid Fernandez.""It's OK," the Venezuelan said of the comparison after the annual All-Star Futures Game in which the World team defeated the United States, 4-0. "No problem."It would be no problem for the Mets, either, given the success that Fernandez had in blue and orange. Although Fernandez's superiors often lamented that he didn't keep himself in better shape, they also marveled at how his delivery fooled opposing batters so often. The same goes for Petit, listed as 6 feet and 180 pounds (he seems bigger), who has a 3-2 record, 2.97 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings for Double-A Binghamton."He kind of pushes the ball out of his uniform, and it's on top of it [the plate] before you know it," said Dan Warthen, the pitching coach for the Mets' Triple-A Norfolk affiliate, who has worked extensively with Petit in spring training and worked for the World team yesterday. "So that 91 looks like 94 or 95."Padres prospect Josh Barfield, who popped out to second base against Petit, didn't find the righthander's delivery particularly deceptive. Said Barfield: "He has a real good changeup, and he works fast."Signed as an international free agent in 2001, Petit has climbed the Mets' ladder with few problems; he also pitched in last year's Futures Game. His 200 strikeouts last year, compiled for Class A Capital City, Class A St. Lucie and Binghamton, ranked second overall in the minor leagues. That explains how he climbed from Baseball America's 28th-ranked Mets prospect to No. 2 in one year.In the wake of Petit's winter work in Venezuela, the Mets have had him on a strict pitch count. But Petit said yesterday, "In the second half, I'm ready to throw a lot of innings."Warthen said all the righthander needs to work on now is "experience. Just continue to pitch. Use his changeup and slider a little bit more, which the organization is encouraging. But right now, the guy locates, he's got a good feel for pitching. He recognizes what hitters are trying to do. It's nice to see at a young age, a pitcher who is a true pitcher."The Mets' top-ranked prospect, outfielder Lastings Milledge, also played in the Futures Game and grounded out to shortstop in his lone at-bat for the U.S. club. Milledge's pro career began in ugly fashion, as a report surfaced of inappropriate sexual behavior in high school. But nothing was ever substantiated, and the Mets' 2003 first-round draft pick said, "It's something that's forgotten."He hit .302 with a .385 on-base percentage for St. Lucie in the first half, and he said yesterday that he'll begin the second half with Binghamton."I'm definitely happy with how things are going right now," said Milledge, 20. "I've still got a lot of work. A lot more steps to go."
