  1. Wright compares well to Miguel Cabrera's first full year in the majors, 2004 he played 160 games, his numbers were..Year Team G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS 2004 FLA 160 603 101 177 31 1 33 112 68 148 5 2 .294 .366 .512 .879 Now when you keep in mind the Mets fell apart last year in the second half, I don't know if Wright will be knocking in a 130 RBI anytime soon but 100+ should be in reach.
  2. On July 25, 1965, New York Mets manager Casey Stengel falls and breaks his hip after attending the Mets Old-Timers dinner. The 74-year-old Stengel will have hip replacement surgery the next day, ending his managerial career. On July 25, 1966, Casey Stengel and Ted Williams are inducted into the Hall of Fame. Both men make memorable speeches in Cooperstown. Williams calls for the election of former Negro leagues stars to the Hall of Fame. Five years later, Satchel Paige will become the first Negro Leagues standout to take his place in Cooperstown. Stengel amazes the crowd with his recollections of his nearly six decades in baseball.
  3. From Ken Rosenthal...]The Mets are focused on two closers--the Devil Rays' Danys Baez and Pirates' Jose Mesa--but they would continue using Braden Looper in the ninth inning, at least initially, if they completed a trade. Baez has blown six saves in 24 opportunities, but that stat is somewhat misleading--he is asked to do more than most closers, frequently pitching in the eighth inning. . . .
  4. Vazquez fanned 11 for the D-Backs in 8 innings.Andruw Jones hit two homers, he's having an MVP year.
  5. ]I've taken a break from my usual non-stop monitoring of WFAN (I've been doing hoity-toity cultural stuff--,museums and art galleries and the like all week). hahaha...good one..Anyway I say his bad attitude is not a dealbreaker, I mean Soriano has never been a guy to hustle but who knows maybe he can change, how many more guys can Showalter run outta Texas?, and maybe playing on a team like the Mets with it's heavy Latin beat might help.
  6. Doesn't Kent recall his Mets days as fondly as getting a root canal?, I thought he really doesn't like NY , does he have a no-trade caluse, I doubt it but he'd probably invoke it.
  7. WFAN talkies and fans have been beaten this Soriano to the Mets to death for the last week, I think as do most people that it would take more than Zambrano to get an ALL-Star player like Soriano, he can hit, has an average glove and a below average hustle attitude, still I'd take him.
  8. Arizona up 2-1 in the 4th.
  9. Yeeeeees, now if the braves lose it'll be a great day, maybe we will have triple happiness even
  10. MFY are down 1 - 0 in the 2nd, Vlad knocked in Figgins with a groundout.the Phillies beat the Padres for the series sweep.
  11. No, he means pitcher Jose Santiago, he's a sinker ball pitcher which Cohen speculates with the Mets going to Coors field that was one reason he was called up.
  12. Benson - 5Piazza - 4Floyd - 1
  13. Randa was had a two minor league pitchers, Nevin has yet to approve the trade to Baltimore, he has a no-trade clause.
  14. I was looking at the roster a while ago and Ivan Maldonado Oquendo caught my eye,any relation to Jose Oquendo?Question, from bottom(R) to top(AAA) how do the Mets minor league affilates progress, I thought for some reason that Hagerstown was above St.Lucie in the pecking order.
  15. Excellent article, the first paragraph is great and probably sums up a bandwagoner.
  16. Interesting, so do you think the mismarked distances are an "honest mistake".Yancy I read recently an article with Billy wagner saying he wouldn't sign back with the Phillies because of the park, doesn't like the place at all.
  17. Ambiorix had a homer in the Suns 8/2 win Thursday, his AVG is still a cause for concern, he's hitting .228 with some power though,11 homers and 39 rbi.Jim Burt has upped his AVG to .260, he has only played in 26 games.
  18. On July 22, 1963, the New York Mets release colorful outfielder Jimmy Piersall, who was hitting .194. Piersall made headlines in June when he ran around the bases backward after hitting his 100th home run.A Doctor I work with says he was at that game.not Mets history but....On July 22, 1923, Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators becomes the first pitcher to record 3,000 strikeouts in the major leagues. The Big Train strikes out five batters in defeating the Cleveland Indians, 3-1.
  19. Guess when the last time the Mets were 3 over .500 this late in the season...]THE JOURNAL NEWS(Original publication: July 22, 2005)NEW YORK — The last time the Mets were three games over .500 this late in the season, Bobby Valentine was the manager, Mo Vaughn could still fit into his uniform, and Timo Perez was considered a bright young talent. That was 2002 and it didn't last. Bobby V got fired, the Hit Dog retired, and Perez was shipped out of town like just about everybody else.http://www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050722/SPORTS01/507220334/1108/SPORTS01
  20. Duh, sorry, good job.
  21. Edgy great quote from David Liss..RB: No interest in the Astros or the Rangers? Arizona Diamondbacks? ]I know people who have moved and they have become fans of the locals. I just can't do that. Your fandom is not something you can change. It's like your religion. have to love that.I love this quote from Viggo.]You can't be a bandwagon guy. When we began shooting Lord of the Rings in New Zealand in '00 there was a guy who taped the Subway Series games when we were working, and I would watch them late at night. God, that was hard to watch. It was crushing. Horrible. It made me want to kill some more in the next scene. Or at least kill a certain pitcher.
  22. Great job, nice change of pace, now can you please put the probable pitchers to verse?,
  23. Not a bad day for the NY NL team in the NL East, big thanks to the Dodgers and Astros, Mets are 7-2 V the West, love that.
  24. I posted before how Viggo Mortensen is a huge Met fan, a search on google found this, Vartan gets a mention..]Viggo Mortensen Q&ABy Richard Deitsch5 August 2004 Source: Sports Illustrated magazine The 45-year-old Lord of the Rings hero and impassioned Mets fan stars in Hidalgo, just out on DVD.Best sporting event you've attended? The 1972 Olympics in Munich. I didn't have tickets, but there was a huge glass wall at the swimming hall, and me and some other kids illicitly climbed up to the glass to watch. I saw Mark Spitz and Gary Hall Sr. Since I swam it was amazing. At the 1980 Games in Lake Placid, you worked as a translator for the Scandinavian teams. How did you pull that off?I was at St Lawrence University in New York, and there was a call for volunteers with language skills. I spoke the Scandinavian languages because I'd lived in Denmark. The best thing was, I got free passes to events, and every night I'd watch hockey. The only game I didn't see was the U.S. final against Finland, because I had to go back to school. You were at the Miracle on the Ice against the Soviets? It was unbelievable. You were kind of hoping they'd win, but you knew there was no way it would happen. And right before your eyes, a miracle. It was such an underdog story. That's what fascinated me. Maybe that's why I love the Mets. For your Vanity Fair cover story, you brought the author a cardboard box of stuff that included a book of poetry that comes with an owl-shaped pewter trinket. What did you bring SI for this interview?Well, since we're on the phone, I don't have anything for you. I can probably get you some San Lorenzo [Argentina soccer team] gear. Let's just say I brought you a 1969 Tom Seaver jersey. Then you can say: 'I can't believe you're giving me this.' And I'll say: 'That's all right, it's just a thing.'You're a fan of the Argentine soccer team San Lorenzo, and in April you were given a plaque and a lifetime membership card. How did you and San Lorenzo hook up?Along with having similar colors, San Lorenzo is a little like the Mets in the sense they don't have the biggest treasure chest. But every once in a while they beat the big guys anyway. A few years back I was speaking to a Hispanic journalist, and the subject of soccer came up. I asked if the interview would be seen in Argentina. I said say 'hi,' to the Argentine people where I lived as a kid and in particular to Los Cuervos, the San Lorenzo fans. Somehow somebody in their P.R. department got wind of that and said if you ever come down, come see a game. Eventually through Lord of the Rings and Hidalgo I had the opportunity. You, Michael Vartan and Jerry Seinfeld have publicly proclaimed your love for the Mets. Explain how you got started.I was about 11 when I came to the U.S. in '69. I got a crash course in baseball that October when the Mets won the World Series. Even though we moved to northern New York -- it was a Yankees town if anything -- the Mets were my team from then on. I've stuck with them through thick and thin. If I'm in town when they come to L.A., I'll see them play. It's not any easier being a Mets fan than it is being a fan of San Lorenzo. You have to have a lot of perseverance -- that's what being a fan is about. You can't be a bandwagon guy. You kept the sword you used throughout the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and you actually bought the horse from Hidalgo. Any other sports memorabilia floating around the Mortensen house?I have enough shirts to field a whole San Lorenzo team, and I have a couple of different autographed baseballs and a Phillies uniform. It's nice to have the jerseys and horse, but those are things and objects. It's what you carry inside you. If you're a Mets fan, it's the ups and downs and the memories of the games you've seen that matters. The best thing I carry with me from the Lord of the Rings -- and most of the actors and crew would agree -- was the experience of doing it. http://www.viggo-works.com/index.php?page=142
