Get ready for the shitshow
batmagadanleadoff replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
If the publication has a prohibition against using profanity, [then] write around it. But "S" followed by three dashes is a way around the use of profanity. So if there's a prohibition against profanity, The Athletic wrote around it. Like you suggested. So it did what you suggested it do. -

What would he have to do to make it legal? If the league is advising that the "in-motion" tactic is illegal, then the likely answer to your question is that the rule itself wasn't properly or precisely written. But I agree with you. If that rule remains written as it is, I'd like to see a manager set his infielders in motion the split second after the pitch is released to challenge the inevitable violation ruling. -

Wonder what this is all about: Buck Showalter Addresses Quote About Jacob deGrom Leaving New York Mets Manager Buck Showalter addressed his quote from last month about the departure of Jacob deGrom. Maybe there isn't more to the story. On Tuesday, Mets manager Buck Showalter downplayed his comment from last month about Jacob deGrom leaving for the Texas Rangers. "Somebody was saying that Jake's got some deep thing…that got blown out," Showalter told reporters. "I said Jake said we'll talk sometime, just want to bring closure. Next thing I know, there was some secret story. That's not the case. That's not what he said, but somebody ran with that thing." In a conversation with NJ.com's Bob Klapisch in January, Showalter said deGrom told him "someday I'd like to sit down with you and explain what really happened" in regards to his free agency and ultimate departure from the Mets. DeGrom allegedly told Showalter that he thought he was going to stay with the Mets. In the end, the two-time Cy Young Award winner signed a massive five-year, $185 million deal with a conditional sixth-year option with the Rangers. Shortly thereafter, SNY's Andy Martino reported that deGrom never gave the Mets a chance to match his final offer. On Tuesday, Showalter indicated that there was no deeper story behind deGrom's departure. "He's in a good place. I'm happy for him and his family," Showalter said of deGrom. After deGrom left, the Mets went out and landed three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander on a two-year, $86 million contract. New York also spent close to $500 million in free agency to bring their payroll up to $370 million, the most in MLB history. https://www.si.com/mlb/mets/news/buck-showalter-addresses-quote-about-jacob-degrom-leaving-new-york-metshttps://www.si.com/mlb/mets/news/buck-showalter-addresses-quote-about-jacob-degrom-leaving-new-york-mets Here's the part that I want more reporting on: Shortly thereafter, SNY's Andy Martino reported that deGrom never gave the Mets a chance to match his final offer.

Edgy MD wrote: Their other recent rules — universal DH and the 26th (and sometimes a 27th) player on the roster — all have been game lengtheners, so maybe they might want to look in the mirror. Just follow the money. There's probably a universal DH because to the owners way of thinking, a DH leads to more offense and fans would rather see run scoring instead of run prevention.
-
It's always about the money. Just follow the money. It's probably incredibly inefficient to the owners for games to go into prolonged extra innings. Overtime and extra pay for the stadium workers. They hafta deal with local liquor laws that might prevent the sale of booze by a certain time. Fans are buying way less goods anyways because they're running out of money by then or have exceeded their spending budgets for the game. And even if they can still spend more, how many fucking hot dogs can a fan eat? Just because the game's continuing, doesn't mean a fan's hunger isn't sated by then. Or they're not even there because they've left the stadium and gone home because they hafta wake up early the next day for work and/or school. Owners have probably been griping internally to themselves about extra inning games forever. It's all about the money. Owners could give a flying fuck about the purity of the game.

Frayed Knot wrote: The only way to combat this is for an internet campaign to organize a mass walk-out of all fans in all parks the moment the ghost runner appears in the top of the 10th. I have zero belief that such a thing is possible. I used to, occasionally, fantasize about unionizing, or a union for baseball fans. But eventually, you get tired of dreaming about impossibilities. It'd be incredibly powerful though, if it could be made to happen. It'd wield so much power that fans wouldn't have to walk out. Just the threat of a walk-out would cause the owners to discuss this rule with the union. As that union's powers peaked, it wouldn't even have to threaten a walk-out. Owners wouldn't even think of implementing that rule without first running it by the fans' union.

Super Bowl Quickie Quiz
batmagadanleadoff replied to batmagadanleadoff's topic in New York Mets Talk
It's four. Four. The answer is four lifetime complete games for Jacob deGrom. In nine seasons and two Cy Young awards. That's about one calendar month's work for Tom Seaver. My, how the game has changed. -
This one's a quickie. So quick, youse don't even need to post your answers or guesses. In fact, I prefer youse don't post your guesses. This way, everybody gets to play without the answer being posted. Just take some time to ponder the answer, and then go look it up. Discuss later. Here's the question: How many lifetime complete games did nine year Met and two-time Cy Young award winner Jacob deGrom pitch in his entire career, to date?

Why.not a handicap, too? The NY teams have to win 101 games to make the playoffs. -
MLB Expansion - Jim Bowden /The Athletic
batmagadanleadoff replied to metirish's topic in New York Mets Talk
Bowden's idea is nutso. The richest teams in the same division? I guess the less wealthy teams would love that, and that's most of the teams. Let's fuck Steve Cohen every which way possible. -
Shootin' the breeze with Mets owner Steve Cohen... Excerpt: The union held firm on its priorities to increase the CBT and limit penalties, and the spending this offseason boomed despite the introduction of a fourth threshold, this year at $293 million, which has earned the nickname in industry circles as "the Cohen Tax." The MLBPA bet that the new threshold wouldn't be a deterrent for the eponymous tax -- and it was right. "I didn't think ["The Cohen Tax"] was that big a deal," Cohen said. "I was already going to be in a big bracket anyway, no question. So it's like the government raising taxes. You're already in a high bracket. What I think about is making income. If I make income, it solves problems. It'd be great to get the payroll to the point where I don't have to pay tax anymore. That's the goal. If we do our job and develop a farm system and get a nice, sustainable pipeline going, we should be able to accomplish that. The [Los Angeles] Dodgers did it. The Dodgers -- what was their payroll in 2015?" It was $297.9 million, a record that held until the Mets' final payroll last season of $299.8 million. [***] But in the end, [Cohen] knows, his mark will be made when the Mets win another title. And if the players he signed this year don't get that done, he knows what Mets fans now expect. Shohei Ohtani and Manny Machado are free agents after this year? Get 'em. Juan Soto is gone after the 2024 season? Make it happen. (Cohen is mum on these topics, having learned his lesson with Correa: Talking publicly about players who are under contract or free agents is an absolute no-no.) https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/insider/story/_/id/35583053/mets-owner-steve-cohen-record-spending-free-agency-2023https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/insider/story/_/id/35583053/mets-owner-steve-cohen-record-spending-free-agency-2023

Off-season stuff. We gave our understated and hastily prepared 2011 set (Come Fly with Me) a badly needed makeover with just a few simple tweaks. They should've jailed and tortured whoever took those downlifting photos. And also the people that decided to run them on front covers of newpapers. How would those covers then ever win cover derbys with such downlifting covers? We should photoshop Mickey Mouse and Snow White onto those photos.
