Wonder what these Mets would look like if the Wilpons still owned them? They wouldn't have won 101 games last year. Diaz would be some other team's heartbreak right now. No Lindor. But probably Gimenez. No Nimmo. They woulda probably traded deGrom knowing there was no way they were gonna re-sign him. Wonder what they would've gotten for a break-the-Nintendo cheat code pitcher who's hurt more often than not? Something. Maybe they even put Alonso on the market? No old-timer's games. No scoreboard improvement. Maybe even more scoreboard ads and even less scoreboard.

If Verlander is supposed to be replacing deGrom, he's off to a pretty accurate impression of deGrom. -

=batmagadanleadoff post_id=120827 time=1680141114 user_id=68] What am I not getting? The Mets are scheduled to play tomorrow. Tomorrow's Opening Day. No MLB teams are scheduled to play today. All 30 teams are scheduled to play tomorrow. So how are the Mets not playing on Opening Day? And how is tomorrow the second day of the season? -

I just renewed my Athletic subscription for one year at $1.00/month. It lapsed about a month ago and I didn't renew right away, out of laziness more than anything else, and the renewal offers kept on getting lower and lower and lower. Sometimes, laziness pays off.

Aces in Queens Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, two dominant right-handers, are joining forces this season with the Mets Excerpt: PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — About nine years ago, Brad Ausmus, then the rookie manager of the Detroit Tigers, found himself staring down an uncomfortable decision. Max Scherzer was coming off his first Cy Young Award season and had established himself as baseball's most recent breakout ace. Justin Verlander had started six straight Opening Days, was a six-time all-star and had a Cy Young of his own. The problem was not that Ausmus might choose the wrong pitcher to help the Tigers win. The problem was that both aces wanted the Opening Day start, as aces tend to do. “Whoever was not starting would not have been thrilled about it,” said Ausmus, who ultimately selected Verlander for the job. “Max said he thought he earned the start. And he was probably right.” About nine years later, New York Mets Manager Buck Showalter found himself facing the same unwinnable win-win decision, with Scherzer and Verlander again together in a World Series caliber-rotation. He planned accordingly. His solution was to .... It wasn't the springtime of *my* life
batmagadanleadoff replied to Johnny Lunchbucket's topic in New York Mets Talk
I'm like Grimm with ST. I didn't see a single pitch of Mets ST this Spring. I'm never in the mood to hear how Rey Ordonez is gonna hit .300 this season because he's batting 1.000 on two for two on account of two seven hoppers that luckily squirted through the infield. And all that WBC talk annoyed the shit out of me because I have even less shits to give for that thing. I hope the announcers do a decent job of guiding the fans through all of the new rules -- not just doing that for Opening Day and then assuming everyone's got it by then. -

Frayed Knot wrote: Yes, never promoted. That's precisely what I meant. I know exactly what you meant. But go ahead. Keep the 13 for 74 in mind for what then? To improve their 13 for 74 against major league pitchers by batting against minor leaguers? Baty hasn't really played in AAA and I can't say it is wrong to think some time there would benefit him. I didn't say it was right or wrong. All I said is that if you're gonna consider Baty and the other guy's combined 13 for 74 against major league pitching to date, well it's gonna be 13 for 74 no matter when they're promoted. If they go 100 for 100 with 100 homers in the minors next month, they'll still be a combined 13 for 74 against MLB pitching before they're promoted again. -

Frayed Knot wrote: Let us keep in mind that Baty and Vientos are a combined 13 for 74 vs ML pitching thus far. If that's the case against promoting them, then they should never ever be promoted because you can say that all of the time into perpetuity before they're eventually promoted. I mean, how do they gwt to improve on that 13 for 74 without being promoted? -
Showalter's not getting fired. He's got Cohen's bucks and too many teams now make the playoffs. And he's not gonna get fired for not winning the WS. The Mets will be perennial playoff qualifiers under Cohen. It's likelier that he might one day be recognized as the best manager the Mets ever had.

Steve Cohen's Amazin', Maddening, Money-Losing Bid to Own New York Once a symbol of Wall Street excess, Cohen has invested lavishly in the Mets, becoming the most beloved billionaire in Queens. Is that enough to reverse team history? Excerpt: He is at once an extreme version of a type — the munificent steward, willing to lose money in a show of how much money he's made — and a model all his own, his tenure rocketing toward something that can feel like a referendum for the man, the Mets, their city and the sport itself. Cohen, 66, has carried off a remarkable reversal in public standing, migrating over the past decade from a reclusive avatar of scofflaw capitalism to an avuncular Twitterer who could probably be elected Queens borough president by acclamation. The Mets have swiftly shed their ingrained identity as lovable losers, their ownership shifting from the cost-conscious, Madoff-swindled Wilpon family to a white-collar boundary-pusher long appraised as neither lovable nor a loser. New York has made room in its political class for a burgeoning macher, with Cohen donating prodigiously to key officials as he imagines transforming the neighborhood around Citi Field into a casino-cum-entertainment hub. And baseball is grappling with the ramifications of Cohen's runaway spending in the nation's most capitalistic major league, where no salary cap constrains him and only one team thought to buy Super Bowl ad time just because it could. [***] The Manager-Made Lasagna Some snapshots from Cohen's long Mets arc can resemble any die-hard's: a precious day at the Polo Grounds with his father, a garment manufacturer from whom Cohen has said he craved more attention as the third of eight children; slumming it with friends in the Shea Stadium upper deck, then swiping better seats as they emptied. Other episodes were more bespoke, fantasy-camp-style indulgences to accompany Cohen's growing fortune. For some $400,000, he acquired the baseball that squirted through Bill Buckner's legs on the way to the Mets' 1986 World Series title. For considerably less, presumably, he and his wife, Alex, won a charity auction around 1999 requiring Bobby Valentine, then the Mets' manager, to prepare lasagna for 20 people at the Cohen estate in Greenwich, Conn., Valentine recalled. And when Cohen's young son seemed primed for batting lessons many years back, the family hired Art Shamsky, from the 1969 World Series champions, for private sessions in Central Park, where Shamsky hauled a hitting tee that often felt decorative. “He just wanted to run after squirrels,” Shamsky said of the boy, who now works in cryptocurrency. Cohen's jaunt through Mets history elides his baseball trajectory some. He has said he used to pull for the Yankees, too. “They were terrible,” he has said of the Mets' leaner years, adding: “It was more fun to follow the Yankees.” Read it all (long read) at https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/26/sports/baseball/steve-cohen-mets-new-york.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/26/sports/baseball/steve-cohen-mets-new-york.html Oh, by the way, according to Forbes, Cohen's net worth is now up to $17 billion. And one more excerpt: Max Scherzer, the three-time Cy Young Award winner in his second season with the team, said he did not initially expect New York to be his destination. Then he spoke to Cohen. “Steve at one point said, ‘Yeah, we're going to win and we're going to do whatever it takes,'” he said. “I said, ‘Whatever it takes?' He sat back here and said, ‘Whatever it takes.'” Brandon Nimmo, the outfielder with a new $162 million contract, said Cohen defaults to a four-word refrain whenever Nimmo mentions his impervious spending: “Brandon, it's just money.”

I thought they already announced this more than a week ago, that Scherzer would start Opening Day.

Edgy MD wrote: First baseman are rarely in the path of the runner because there's a force on for all runners going to first, so virtually all plays are forceouts, and a collision wouldn't undo that. If a runner wanted to attempt a takeout slide to stop the firstbaseman from continuing the play after the putout, he would be prevented by the rule constricting him to the marked lane. Fielders covering the other bases, however, are more exposed, and responsible for their own protection. Makes sense. Yes. Edgy's post was a very good one. But there could be first base collisions before the runner nears first base on bunts or on slow rollers where there's a tag play before the base. And my post was very good, too, whether you ignore it or not. Know what doesn't make any sense? That a runner isn't allowed to intentionally collide with a catcher. You can have nasty intentional collisions at any base. That you don't usually see them at the first three bases has more to do with context and the dynamics of baseball. But the rules don't prohibit those collisions. batmags 1; edgy 1; ron darling negative three; metsguyinmichigan TILT.

Holy shit was that original scoreboard incarnation like the ugliest fucking scoreboard you ever saw in your whole fucking life. The only uglier scoreboard was the one right next to it, that was practically touching the main scoreboard. Whaddya expect when the idiot tyrant Jeff Wilpon insists on designing the stupid stadium? They couldn't have done any worse if they let Homer Simpson design Citi Field.
