The one positive is that Wang is returning over the worse of the back-end guys but still, they have a way to go. But I don't know how dramatically they will improve, and things sure could wrong.[/quote:1zich3tm] I pretty much agree with your point. But "third-place team" is relative in that division. A team could win 90 games and finish third in the AL East. Last year's MFY's (89-73) would've finished in third even if they'd won 94 games. Tough division. smg58 Dec 31 2008 09:27 AM How does Moose get more win shares than Sabathia, and Giambi get more win shares than Teixeira? They do have plenty of question marks in the rotation. They'll be lucky to get 30+ starts from both Wang and Burnett, and Joba's no safe bet either. Hughes and Kennedy were both rushed through the system, and at least one of them will do fine this year, so they'll be better at the last spot than people realize. But the 2 through 4 spots could really come back to get them. The offense will be what it usually is. Jeter and Cano will probably be a little better, Damon probably a little worse. Posada and Swisher are the question marks, along with Matsui because of his health. On paper, they're the team to beat IF everybody stays on the field, but that's a really huge if. New road uniforms w/o "New York"? Less black?

I thought this was the new Mets uniform for 2009. The ebay seller says "new", so it must be. -
That article is from a 1977 issue featuring Sadaharu Oh on the cover. As a kid and teenager, I was so obsessed with my SI collection, that to this day, I still have an excellent recall of SI content. I can even associate a time and place with many of the '70's SI issues. For example, the Sadaharu Oh issue arrived while we were on a Summer family vacation. I remember picking up that issue at my aunt's house, who was entrusted with our mail while we were away. Steve Henderson appeared on Kiner's Korner with such regularity during that stretch reported in SI, that the running gag was to rename the show in Stevie's honor.

Orosco appeared without a nameplate. And yes, it was a 1978 issue. I suppose that there wasn't enough time to affix a nameplate to Orosco's temporary game jersey. Either that, or the Mets simply didn't care about the aesthetics, knowing all along that Orosco would wear #61 only until his regular #47 arrived. Teams usually carry spare jerseys in case of unanticipated screwups. I know that the Mets do. When the team realized that Orosco's regular jersey didn't arrive in time, I suppose that he was given any old available number. Orosco was a rookie and thus, unlikely to complain about wearing such a high number. He was probably just happy to be there. The nameplate was affixed after the jersey was presumably recycled to a lower league. I was using that jersey to illustrate how Met jerseys were recycled. That jersey, like your Brooks, was worn in only one Major League game. You're right about the '82's. In 1982, the Mets changed their road unis, adding racing stripes and eliminating both the two button pullover front collar and the sleeve end piping. These elements would be added to the home unis the following season. I have two 1982 game useds -- a Mike Scott road and a Joel Youngblood home.

Edgy DC Jan 09 2009 01:21 PM Well, an excuse for not using that logo is that they've stilpulated and exclusive license that doesn't allow that logo to be used on any merchandise except that bought within the mallpark. A Dull Patch By TYLER KEPNER The Mets unveiled their primary logo on Nov. 16, 1961, and it has gone virtually unchanged. With the teams name scripted across a city skyline and above a bridge on an orange-laced baseball, the trademark is timeless. The Mets most recent design has not been as warmly embraced. The uniform patch that commemorates the opening of Citi Field has caused a stir on the Internet, with ESPN.com calling it the worst sleeve patch in M.L.B. history. Dave Howard, the Mets executive vice president for business operations, said the Mets signed off on the design presented to them by Citigroup, which is paying the team $400 million over the next 20 years for naming rights to the stadium. Everyone has their own point of view, Howard said. Taste is very subjective, and we understand that and appreciate the passion of Mets fans. The sleeve patch is a variation of the official Citi Field logo introduced last year, with the words Inaugural Season in white letters on a blue square. Below is an orange square that says 2009, also in white. In recent seasons, the Astros, the Phillies, the Cardinals and the Nationals have all used distinctive ballpark elements in their commemorative patches; the Astros showed their roof in silhouette, the Cardinals their arched entryway. The Yankees 2009 patch prominently features the rooftop facade of the new Yankee Stadium. The Mets patch seems to take minimalism to the extreme. Baseball forbids teams putting corporate names on uniforms, but Citigroup wanted the patch to evoke the companys general branding. The Mets did not object. Citigroup itself is in financial distress and is planning to dismantle part of its corporate empire. But the patch remains the patch, for better or worse. It is compatible and consistent with Citigroups overall branding and graphic design elements, Howard said. Thats the connection. The Citi logo is a fairly simple logo. Its citi in lowercase, with a red arc. So they have more of a minimalist style to their brand and their logo. Obviously, as our partner for Citi Field, were going to give substantial deference to their design and graphic treatment. The official Citi Field logo has been widely panned as drab and too evocative of the Dominos Pizza logo. But fans will have to get used to it, because it will be affixed to the side of every other seating row at the ballpark and used extensively in marketing and promotions, assuming the Citi name survives. Howard said the Mets were flattered that Citigroup designed a logo that incorporated the teams blue and orange colors. That is not always the case; the logo for Petco Park in San Diego has the corporate name in red, even though the Padres do not wear that color. Then again, that logo also includes a Padres insignia and two palm trees, while the Citi Field trademark looks painfully plain. The Mets do have an alternate inaugural season logo that features the windows of the distinctive rotunda at Citi Field. But Howard said that logo would be available only on merchandise sold at the ballpark. He added that the team would not change the sleeve patch, which will be used for all home games. The Yankees 2009 uniform patch, left, depicts the facade of the teams new stadium. The Mets uni- form patch for the season displays ... words. metirish Jan 15 2009 08:36 AM It actually looks somewhat better in cloth form. Farmer Ted Jan 15 2009 08:47 AM Fire Dave Howard NOW!! Edgy DC Jan 15 2009 08:52 AM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Jan 15 2009 09:03 AM What's amazing is that they got the Mets to admit two basic truths that --- though as big and glaring as Dave Kingman's feet --- I fully expected them to talk around: ]Dave Howard, the Mets executive vice president for business operations, said the Mets signed off on the design presented to them by Citigroup, which is paying the team $400 million over the next 20 years for naming rights to the stadium. ]The Mets patch seems to take minimalism to the extreme. Baseball forbids teams putting corporate names on uniforms, but Citigroup wanted the patch to evoke the companys general branding. Where Howard is lost is this: ]Everyone has their own point of view, Howard said. Taste is very subjective, and we understand that and appreciate the passion of Mets fans. No, actually, this time, everyone seems to have the same point of view. The funny thing is that Wilpon put his heart into evoking the aesthetic he wanted, but took the queen's shilling and is now letting her wreck his whole palace. OE: Maybe MLB will step in and end this nonsense. metirish Jan 15 2009 08:57 AM I hadn't thought about it like that , very lame from the Mets. Benjamin Grimm Jan 15 2009 08:59 AM ]"we understand that and appreciate the passion of Mets fans. Or, it's good that everyone hates this patch! It shows that they care! Benjamin Grimm Jan 15 2009 09:31 AM I hope, for their sakes, that they're not printing up too many t-shirts and mugs with that logo on it. It's the New Coke of baseball logos. metsmarathon Jan 15 2009 09:32 AM y'know, they could've at least had the lettering be in lowercase. that way, not only would it be more in line with the citi logo, but it would also appeal to my narrow sensibilities. ="dcrules01":1pg8w5tc]On the gamers the Cubbage and Taveras nameplates were restored which I think is a good possibility with the Brooks also since a ton of these were recycled in the minors from what I understand.. Do you have your collection on line id like to see it..[/quote:1pg8w5tc] Yes. I didn't think you could've found that Brooks jersey with Hubie's nameplate still intact. The Mets, as you said, recycled their uniforms, especially during that era. An undesirably high number like Brooks' 62 uniform would've ultimately ended up anywhere in the Mets system .. any minor league level, the instructional league, spring training. As an example --among other jerseys I own, I have the uniform that Jesse Orosco wore in his first game ever. It's a #61 uni and it was issued to Orosco temporarily because his regular #47 jersey didn't arrive in time for the Mets '79 opener. That jersey was also recycled -- there are barely visible outlines of a nameplate once affixed to that jersey after Orosco wore it. My collection is not online. It's not even on display. It's all packed up. I have a project (all in my head) to eventually display my Mets collection. One day, I might even get around to doing it. I think that there's at least one other member here who collects Mets jerseys. He has a very good sized collection of game useds, M&N's and retail authentics, if I remember correctly. ="dcrules01":1pg8w5tc]What size are you [soupcan]?? Ill sell you my Youngblood you can strip it or send it to EPS and have them strip it and they can make it into a Flynn. The Youngblood has 3x but fits more like a 2xl..There was just a Mays on ebay size 46 which im confused because they only come s m l xl xxl xxxl xxxxl that sold ..They pop up once in awhile..[/quote:1pg8w5tc] ebay M&N jerseys with numerical sizes are most likely, counterfeits. I'd guess that most ebay M&N's are fakes. Some of the fakes are comically inept. But even the fakes that look reasonably accurate might be made of inferior fabrics. They might not wear well, or last very long. dcrules01 Dec 22 2008 11:29 AM If you ever want the Orosco nameplate restored lmk ill give you my guys info he does great work as you can see from the Cubbage and Taveras nameplate..Yeah I remember that Orosco being for sale that is a gem piece you have and display your items it drives my wife crazy but in a way she says it keeps me outta trouble or so she thinks lol.. batmagadanleadoff Dec 22 2008 11:53 AM ="dcrules01":2iy1cg4g]If you ever want the Orosco nameplate restored lmk ill give you my guys info he does great work as you can see from the Cubbage and Taveras nameplate..Yeah I remember that Orosco being for sale that is a gem piece you have and display your items it drives my wife crazy but in a way she says it keeps me outta trouble or so she thinks lol..[/quote:2iy1cg4g] Orosco never had a nameplate on his #61 uni. The jersey was issued to him for one game only. dcrules01 Dec 22 2008 01:14 PM So was it a carry over from the 78 season? Im confused lol I thought you said you could see where the nameplate was.Interesting Mets wore this style home from 78-82 but changed the road in 82.I have a Zachary and Swan road 82 I love them.. batmagadanleadoff Dec 22 2008 01:53 PM Orosco appeared without a nameplate. I have two 1982 game useds -- a Mike Scott road and a Joel Youngblood home. dcrules01 Dec 22 2008 02:13 PM Flynn and Youngblood were my guys I would kill to have a Youngblood if you ever consider moving it or if something would interest you in a trade I would do it in a heartbeat.. soupcan Dec 22 2008 02:32 PM He'll trade you Youngblood for Flynn.
