I guess the Mets can't bully Sandberg into going along with today's instance of MetSpeak.

  10. Fred Wilpon had a good run. 35 years ago, Fred was very wealthy, but not own-a-baseball-team Master of the Universe wealthy. He could barely afford a one digit percent share of the team. But through legal maneuvering, a lotta luck (you always need that, probably more than anything else in life) and probably a lot of chicanery involving Madoff inflated balance sheets, he parlayed his tiny stake in the team into a majority ownership share.
  11. Tommy John surgery. What a shame, too.

  14. G-Fafif wrote: Big-balled Saul Katz has had it the Mets, reports the Times. Wilpons Partner Has Expressed Interest in Selling His Share of Mets By Michael S. Schmidt Katzs apparent desire to sell suggests that the Mets losses have tested his patience. Their financial woes, which started around the time that Madoffs fraud was exposed, in 2008, have had an impact on the team and its owners and limited how much has been spent in recent years on the clubs payroll. *** Wilpon and his son Jeff have maintained that the teams finances have improved more recently, but several people in baseball briefed on that issue said the situation remained troublesome. And the payroll essentially remains where it was in 2013, somewhere from $85 million to $90 million, leaving it in the lower third in the major leagues despite the fact that the Mets are a big-market team. Wow. A chink in the armor. An opening! If there's any truth to this piece, it tells me to expect more of the same Mets financial misery for years to come. Why would Katz want out if Mets prosperity truly was around the corner? Expect some word-lengthy Megdal pieces real soon.

But fans and the media are judging the Mets as if it's a train running on a reliable schedule. "The Mets are on a timeline". "This year, they'll win half their games". "Next year they'll win 85 games." "Then they'll win the next three World Series". Expectations are unreasonable and border on the childish. There aren't any guarantees and there are 29 other teams trying, or hoping, to do the exact same thing that Mets fans want their Mets to do. Alderson inherited a team that would struggle to beat the de Roulet Mets with any consistency. And now they're broke and deep in the middle of a financial crisis. And people still hold the Mets to this "timeline" where they're supposed to challenge for the pennant with retreads, no money and bullshitting owners who still publicly deny their state of poverty. How is this supposed to be Alderson's fault? Yeah, I think in hindsight you almost have to look at the challenge for Alderson -- build a competitive team at $90 M, starting with one that makes $138 million and happens not to have any prospects on the way -- as something akin to building an expansion team. Exactly. But an expansion team under 1962's conditions.

  17. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Yeah, too much is made of LoB, and enough is made of the ratio of LoB:RS. Yes, I've been thinking this like, forever. An inning in which you score eight runs, but leave three on base, is much different from an inning where you score zero runs and leave three on base. An inning has to end some time, and it's not necessarily a mark of some kind of failure if not every runner scores. I totally agree. I never made a big deal about LOB's. I doubt that the stat correlates strongly, or even at all, to winning, or even scoring. It's a MacGuffin.
