I think that that was around the time that Seaver began to rave about Garrett, predicting that he'd be a future perennial all-star. I remember hearing The Guess Who's American Woman and Freda Payne's Band of Gold on my camp counselor's radio like every hour, it seemed, that Summer.
  2. G-Fafif wrote: Are we counting months achieved while not actually being a Met? Willie Mays. No. But let's move on to that game. Which one-time Met has the highest ranking OPS month on that list? (Hint: Stay away from Hall of Famers). Ken Singleton? That was quick. Ken Singleton (#23) April/March 1981 OPS 1.498 -- .472/.517/.981

  4. G-Fafif wrote: Wow on Not September '73 (which is why I guess the redhead). Any other guess for the extra credit would be a stab in the dark. We were looking for June of 1970.
  5. John Milner? It's Hammer Time!! Milner OPS'd 1.349 in March/April of '76 with a slash line of .488/.582/.767, 141st all-time. [fimg=444]http://keymancollectibles.com/photos/images/wpe15.jpg[/fimg] Here's the full list. http://www.baseball-reference.com/play-index/share.cgi?id=Qx04p And Jonah Keri's Grantland piece. http://grantland.com/the-triangle/barry-bonds-best-mlb-months/
  6. G-Fafif wrote: Only because he reached base a ton when he got here...Willie Mays? Willie Mays made that list twice, but never as a Met. Mays's best OPS month (1.308 in Sept/Oct of '55) would rank 5th on the list of all-time Mets monthly OPS's.
  7. G-Fafif wrote: Assuming Garrett's is September '73. Is Cleon correct, too? Same month? G-Fafif wrote: Assuming Garrett's is September '73. Is Cleon correct, too? Same month? Cleon's not on the list. I knew you'd go for September, 1973. I would've too. That ain't the month.
  8. I'll disclose the 4th Met, who's no surprise, and was casually mentioned in an earlier post, even though I wasn't quizzing for the 4th Met. 1. Benny Agbayani 2. Wayne Garrett 3. ?????????????? 4. Mike Piazza
  9. G-Fafif wrote: Angel Pagan? See post two above this one.
  10. G-Fafif wrote: Wayne Garrett? [fimg=333]http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111222140534/uncyclopedia/images/b/bf/Audience-clapping.gif[/fimg] What the hell made you think of Red Garrett? (all-time rank #136, 2d ranking Met, 1.351 OPS, 4hr, 16 BB) For extra credit, give me the month and year of Garrett's awesome month. You can eliminate any guesses that weren't Mets teammates with Red. And Cleon.
  11. G-Fafif wrote: Been thinking of guys who raked across state lines, so to speak, who might have had a great 30-31 days but not inside contiguous monthly borders. It's defined calendar settings that kept Jack Morris on the HOF ballot as long he stayed. There's some sensible flexibility in the author's definition of month for purposes of that list. March and April are combined, as are September and October. That Morris stuff about best pitcher of the '80's decade drives me nuts.

  14. G-Fafif wrote: Jeff Kent? Kent made the list as a Giant, 219th all-time, June, 2000, his MVP season.
  15. G-Fafif wrote: G-Fafif wrote: Gary Carter (fourth guy)? Nah. Did Carter have a scalding month. I suddenly don't remember. Here's a hint for the tough 2nd and 3rd place Mets -- they were Mets teammates. Crazy September 1985. Yeah. Now I remember. Not that it's so easy, being blinded by the even more dazzling September '85 of Dwight Gooden.
  16. G-Fafif wrote: Dave Magadan when he didn't bat leadoff? Mags had a hellacious few weeks in 1990, when he was finally given the starting job. But I don't know if his output fell neatly within the boundaries of a calendar month. No Mags.

  19. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Agbayani? Winner. Winner. Not only did Agbayani make the list, but he tops all Mets with an OPS of 1.395 during May of his rookie 1999 season, good for an all-time rank of 81.
