Inspired by Batmags's Quickie Quizzes, I did a little checking and have determined that ONE player remains active as of Spring 2015 who can say "I played at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, where the New York Mets invented the National League Championship Series, where John Stearns delivered a message to Chief Noc-a-homa, where Rick Camp did unspeakable things to Tom Gorman at unspeakable hours and, oh yeah, Henry Aaron told Babe Ruth to get lost." So who are the only Kansas City Royals players to have appeared in a game played at Ebbets Field? One guess per post.

Who is this fellow who lives to tell the tale of when men were men, Interleague games were theoretical, Chipper Jones was merely young and vaguely unlikable and Turner Field referred to the owner's backyard? (You could've given me a hundred guesses and I would've needed another hundred.) I definitely need to work on my quiz intros. -

You can't fool me, fellers. That cart didn't exist in '69 and woulda had a cloth covered cap in '72. -

He's mostly remembered for that tape measure blast against the Braves that went about halfway up the Shea scoreboard, but Mo absolutely crushed the bejeesus out of a lot of other pitches during those weeks. Not just HR's either. He was like Herman Munster wrecking the stadium during his tryout for Leo Durocher. That wouldn't last.

SteveJRogers wrote: Charlie Hough? I gave out these "knuckle" clues because I had Phil Niekro (Colts Stadium) and Charlie Hough (Forbes Field) as the answers. Hough, who debuted in 1970 at Pittsburgh (his only '70 appearance at Pitt.), retired in 1994, edging out Nolan Ryan, who retired in 1993. But here's the thing. Hough's debut was in August --- and therefore at Three Rivers Stadium. I dunno how I missed that because I knew going in, that the last game played at Forbes was at around the 1970 ASG. This means that Edgy had the the quiz nailed all along. Johnny Podres was a Padre and a Bklyn Dodger. The Expo had to have been a visiting player, a teammate of Ralph Kiner's, for that matter: Elroy (or Roy) Face. Solved. Former Padre Bob L. Miller debuted in 1957 in the NL, but appeared in only five games, none in Brooklyn. [fimg=333]http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_yKSo5xPjLpM/TMfHykGdD5I/AAAAAAAAPWQ/sA5IZYTKPuY/s400/sc0007bb9f01.jpg[/fimg] [fimg=333]http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/board/attachments/ootp-mods-rosters-photos-quick-starts/241812d1326488552-gambo-t_wil1-photopack-roy-face-expos.jpg[/fimg] The only current Mets to have played at Shea Stadium are Wright, Murphy, Niese and Parnell with the Mets.... and Colon as a visitor. NEW YORK (AP) -- With Mike Piazza and Mo Vaughn finally clicking at the same time, the New York Mets are fighting their way back into contention. [fimg=355]http://a.espncdn.com/media/mlb/2002/0723/photo/a_piazza_i.jpg[/fimg] Mike Piazza, right, hit his 326th career home run as a catcher, just one behind Johnny Bench. Piazza and Vaughn each hit two-run homers, and Jeff D'Amico won for the first time in nearly two months as New York beat the Montreal Expos 4-3 on Tuesday night. It took 79 games for the Mets' biggest sluggers to homer in the same contest. But they've both connected four times in the past 22 games as the Mets have moved into the thick of the wild card race. "This is what we've been waiting for,'' Vaughn said. "It's late but it's not too late. We have a chance to get ourselves into the playoffs.'' The Expos lost their fifth straight game, but more importantly watched All-Star right fielder Vladimir Guerrero leave with a bruised left knee after crashing into the wall to rob Jeromy Burnitz of an extra-base hit. "He just banged his knee up,'' manager Frank Robinson said. "He should be all right tomorrow.'' Guerrero's catch was one of the only highlights for the slumping Expos, who less than two weeks ago seemed poised to make a surprising run at the playoffs. But after acquiring slugger Cliff Floyd on July 11, the Expos are just 3-10. Floyd has offered little help, batting only .200 with two RBI for Montreal. The Expos wasted scoring chances in the opening two innings before finally breaking through with three runs in the final two frames. "We just need someone to get a big hit earlier,'' Robinson said. "We didn't give ourselves a chance to jump out on them.'' The Mets, who looked lost coming out of the All-Star break, have won eight of 10 to move four games over .500 for the first time since May 31. "We still have a lot of time left,'' Piazza said. "We're kind of chasing now. We have crept back into the wild card race.'' They will need more strong starts like the one D'Amico (5-8) gave them to stay in the hunt. The right-hander took a shutout into the eighth inning, ending a nine-start winless streak. He had been 0-4 with an 8.06 ERA since beating Florida 3-0 on May 26. A 52-minute rain delay before the start of the game cut into D'Amico's warmup time. He stranded five runners in the first two innings before settling down after that. "My bullpen was a little bit rushed because of the rain delay,'' he said. "I went out there and felt my way through in the beginning and after that everything was good.'' Armando Benitez pitched the ninth for his 25th save, allowing a solo homer to Brian Schneider. Bartolo Colon (3-1) lost for the first time with Montreal and just the second time in 12 decisions, counting his tenure with Cleveland. Colon, who allowed four runs and five hits in six innings, was coming off two straight complete games -- including a 134-pitch effort against the Mets last Thursday. "He didn't quite have his really sharp stuff,'' Mets manager Bobby Valentine said. "He was probably a little tired.'' Last week, the Mets wasted many scoring chances, getting 13 hits but stranding 13 runners in a 2-1 loss. New York made the most of its hits this game and could have scored more if not for Guerrero's catch. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Burnitz hit a drive into the right-field corner. Guerrero sprinted over and made a leaping grab as he hit the wall. He remained in the game, but went back to the clubhouse with his bat and glove after the inning and didn't return. Colon was sharp until running into trouble in the fourth. Piazza walked on four pitches leading off the inning, and Vaughn hit the next pitch over the right-field fence for his 16th homer. Vaughn has 11 homers in his last 24 games as he has finally found his rhythm after missing last season with an injury. "I'm glad it's clicked in for me,'' Vaughn said. "The first couple of months I wanted to do so well, being back home. After that, I've settled down and I'm having fun.'' After Timo Perez bounced a single over first baseman Andres Galarraga to start the sixth, Piazza hit his 22nd homer to make it 4-0. D'Amico left after allowing Fernando Tatis' two-run single with two outs in the eighth. He allowed two runs and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings. Game notes Expos All-Star 2B Jose Vidro didn't play for a second straight game because of a stiff back. ... Piazza hit his 326th homer as a catcher, one behind Johnny Bench and 25 behind Carlton Fisk. ... Piazza threw out his third runner of the series, catching Jose Macias trying to steal after a pitchout in the fourth inning.

Trot it out on the nearest home game to Earth Day, and invite schoolkids to show off their enviro-projects. Guess how many interns it took me to come up with that? Nothing wrong with that idea. It's done all the time. Just past the Shea Stadium entrance to the Diamond Club, the Mets had a Willie Mays NY Giants jersey on display. The jersey wasn't an original one. It was a Mitchell & Ness jersey with the M&N tags removed so that it wouldn't look so obviously fake. The Mets weren't trying to deceive anybody either. The corresponding signage indicated that the jersey was a replica. Art museums commonly display copies instead of the original artwork. I wouldn't mind seeing a replica cart at Citi made to look as close to the original as possible.

Because if it's supposed to be cart guy's fault when that cart sells at auction, then just the same, you can blame the new buyer for not gifting the thing to the Mets two days after he takes possession of it from cart guy.

Besides, if the Wilpons got the cart on loan, they'd probably strip it and sell the parts out the back door, then claim the cart was stolen. More entitlements. Let 'em buy the damn cart. Haven't they gotten enough free billion dollar lands from the city? They need a free golf cart, too?
-
Fuck the Wilpons. Like they need to be loaned out something that might go for tens and tens and tens of thousands of dollars. I bet that Jeff Wilpon and his wife and kids couldn't last two weeks on $50,000.00

How could cart guy loan it to the Mets when they won't even return his calls/emails?
-
What's this business about cart guy having to get to Doubleday's within 30 minutes to close the deal? What if cart guy agreed over the phone, then got stuck in traffic or got a flat tire or something and was delayed? Delayed enough that he arrived at Doubleday's at precisely the same time as the other potential buyer got there? I can't believe Doubleday would make such a kooky arrangement. I suppose that once cart guy promised to show up to buy the cart, Doubleday could have called off the first potential buyer to avoid that kooky scenario imagined above. But then there'd be no need for cart guy to have to get to Doubleday within half an hour.

Q&A with the cart guy (I'm one of the Q'ers), who reveals Wilpon & Co. haven't returned his inquiries vis-vis "you guys want it back?" Very cool details on how the cart rolled from Doubleday to this guy & what it's been doing since. http://metspolice.com/2015/03/19/how-the-mets-bullpen-cart-went-private-and-why-i-dont-expect-the-mets-to-get-it-back/ If I posted this information when I started this thread, you might've asked him about it: About 10 or 11 years ago, I remember seeing the Mets bullpen cart being offered on eBay. The "Buy it Now" price was either $200K or a quarter million dollars, although the seller stated that the selling price was negotiable. I remember that the seller indicated that he was in possession of the cart and that it was at his house on Long Island. Pictures showed the bullpen cart outdoors at what appeared to be the seller's nice-sized and very grassy backyard. ___________ Sean OShea: What happened to the old hat? Shannon Shark: or is that the same/old hat? Same old hat. They re-painted to logo before I got it so more than 15 years ago. You can see that up close. Same old cloth hat? Because the cart Franco used to drive in Tug had a hard hat. Does "Jamie" own the hard hat car? Is the hard hat car the original cart with the cloth cap replaced? Or is the hard hat car a new car that was never used by the Mets during their bullpen cart era? I'm confused. OE: I doubt that the Mets had a brand new cart built just so that Franco could drive Tug around for 2 minutes in 2003. The Mets probably borrowed cart guy's cart. And in 2003, the cart had a hard plastic cap, not the original cloth cap.

Take the white wall test. Compare the outfield wall to Swoboda's shirt, or to the blank ad space right next to the Rheingold ad at the bottom of the scoreboard. [fimg=955:3c5sw1mw]https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7590/16679370880_4313fec53e_o.jpg[/fimg:3c5sw1mw]
