Great. You're disagreeing with me on this and it's all resting on that Tejada is OBP'ing five one-thousandths of a point higher than league average for a #2 hitter. This disagreement has been going on for two hours and you probably didn't even know that number until 45 seconds before your last post. This isn't as big a deal as either of us are making it out to be because Wright's out, Wright should be back soon, and yesterday's was a C lineup, even accounting for the drop off in quality from all of the current injuries. But if Tejada truly belongs in the #2 slot, then this team has another problem. Being average does not get you into the post-season. And if forced to carry some average hitters, I'd prefer that they be bottom of the order hitters.

Thanks to this terrible lineup construction tradition, fans accept (and I don't necessarily say "youse") a #2 hitter that's average, or even crappy, because, you know, what does his crappiness matter if he can sac bunt the leadoff guy over to the next base? Put a crappy hitter in the #2 hole and compound that dumb move by having him intentionally destroying a chance for a big inning, even in the first inning, right before the most potent hitters are due up. Not sure that 15 to 20 points is a "tick" above average, nor am I trying to make an argument for Tejada batting 2nd I'm clarifying that a .327 lifetime OBA ins't "crap" just because calling it so helps make whatever point you're trying to make. I think you're simplifying things. A .327 OBP might not be "crappy" when compared against everybody else's OBP, including every pitcher, your Rey Ordonez's and the fringe guys that don't stick around long enough to register in most fan's memories two or three years down the line. But it's a crappy OBP for the #2 hitter on the team I'm rotting for.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: Here's my solution: Don't drop the DH suddenly, leaving owners stuck with contracts. Instead, say that the rule will expire in five years. Or eight years. Or ten. That leaves plenty of time to plan for the change. And to appease the union, expand the active roster from 25 players to 27. Or 28. This has always been my solution, too. Notwithstanding the DH issue though, I think MLB's due for a roster expansion anyway, given the dramatic impact pitch-counts have had on the game and rosters, essentially requiring teams to trim their bench from about seven position player subs to four or five. The reduced bench limits strategies maybe even more so than the DH itself. Roster construction in today's game is more crucial than ever, is my guess.

Well, I don't think he's that crappy. At least with regard to his on-base abilities. He's not my first choice, but considering the spring training array of starters they were going with yesterday, he would have been the one I'd have gone for in that position. Tejada's lifetime OBP is .327. That's crap in my book, although, yeah, so was yesterday's collection of position starters. Fun fact: William Friedkin preferred Jackie Gleason over Gene Hackman for the role of Popeye Doyle in The French Connection. "Bang! Zoom!"

Edgy MD wrote: If I'm starting Tejada, I bat him second.... Tejada's no #2 hitter. Not that there aren't a shitload of former and current managers who reflexively put some crappy light hitting crappy hitter in that slot. I'm looking right at you, Wee Willie SmallBalls. The #2 slot is the most abused and misunderstood slot in a baseball lineup.

Empty Seats: Orioles Close Baseball Game to the Public After Baltimore Riots By M. Alex Johnson With Baltimore under a nighttime curfew and police and National Guard troops deployed across the city after a night of riots, the Baltimore Orioles canceled a second straight game Tuesday and said their game Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox would be played behind closed doors in an empty stadium. The Orioles, whose stadium, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, isn't far from where the worst violence occurred Monday night, are clearing town after almost 200 people were arrested and 15 buildings were set on fire Monday night as police clashed with crowds protesting the death last week of Freddie Gray in police custody. Wednesday's game against the Chicago White Sox will be closed to the public, the team said. Fans will get to watch the game only on television, devoid of cheering, booing and abuse of the umpires. The games that were called off Monday and Tuesday will be made up Thursday in a double-header. The Tampa Bay Rays were scheduled to be in Baltimore for three games Friday through Sunday, but those games will be moved to Tampa, Florida, instead. "We believe that these decisions are in the best interests of fan safety and the deployment of city resources," Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said. The odd spectacle is almost unprecedented in professional American sports, but it isn't unknown in Europe, especially in soccer, usually to avoid riots between rival groups of fans or to punish teams whose fans have misbehaved. The national soccer teams of Croatia and Italy are scheduled to play a European Championship match June 12 in Zagreb behind closed doors after Croatian fans yelled racist abuse, set off fireworks and threw rocks and bottles during a match against Norway on March 28. http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/baltimore-unrest/orioles-close-baseball-games-public-after-baltimore-riots-n349856 [fimg=544]http://rlv.zcache.com/what_if_they_gave_a_war_and_nobody_came_poster-r76fed6d694f447d7a5beb186842ee110_i3579_8byvr_1024.jpg[/fimg]

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: The stupid Marlins often wear MIAMI at home and MARLINS on the road. Miami Cool. New York pals Frankie and Jackie take their friendship down South to Miami Beach. Years earlier, The Great One vomited all over Sinatra at the Polo Grounds during the Shot Heard Round the World game.
