Boy have magazine covers in general gone downhill over the last 10-15 years. Every magazine cover looks the same: a celebrity and the entire table of contents as a wall of text plastered all over everything. SI included, although this cover is not that bad, at least in comparison to what SI now routinely puts out.
  4. I had a feeling this off-season that SI might cover the Mets pitchers on the Baseball Issue. But in my mind, Syndergaard was no doubt about it on that cover.

Between that and that deGrom was off his game some from sometime in September 2015 through the WS .. and I don't what that's supposed to mean. But I'm paying attention. Because I know what it could mean. This is the year that the rubber hits the road on the trend that whenever a Met right-handed pitcher wins the Rookie of the Year award, the Mets win the WS two seasons after.

I don't know why they hafta get locked up. Of course if they weren't locked up, we wouldn't need a zillion threads on this. We'd have just the one and that one thread would have all the pictures and posts you'd wanna look at if you were interested in minty walls. Not that I could find any of 'em anyways -- at least not in 10 or 15 minutes -- because the search engine here sucks even more than Donald Trump. Someone'll tell me to look for 'em on Google. Yeah, sure. Like that ever works more than four percent of the time I can tell you from experience.

  12. Part of a two-volume SABR book set: [fimg=444:151q3gpx]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51W3WqXYGuL._SX385_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg[/fimg:151q3gpx] One of a two-book series on the rivals that met in the 1986 World Series, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets, including biographies of every player, coach, broadcaster, and other important figures in the top organizations in baseball that year. This book on the 1986 season re-tells the story of that year’s classic World Series. After four games, each team had won two away games and neither had won at home. Then the Red Sox won Game Five at Fenway, and were one game away from winning their first World Championship in 86 years. It came to the point they were one pitch away from baseball Nirvana. And then.... Just about everyone knows what happened, but there are takes on it here you might not have read elsewhere. Mostly, this is the story of each of the players, coaches, managers, and broadcasters, their lives in baseball and the way the 1986 season fit into their lives. As with many of the books published by the Society of American Baseball Research, this was a true collaborative effort. There are 74 different SABR members who contributed to making these two books on the Mets and Red Sox a reality. It took us two books to tell the story as well as we wanted. Be sure to pick up the companion 1986 Boston Red Sox book for the rest of the story! [fimg=333:151q3gpx]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51BBYAlPyoL._SX385_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg[/fimg:151q3gpx]

  14. Gilkey? But I can't remember who the Mets gave up to get him.
  15. Nymr83 wrote: According to The Donald, he has the support of Paul O'Neil. please merge for posterity. Funny. I remember this Mets yearbook from the late '80s or early 90s. I'm 100% positive that Dave Magadan is in it and about 85% certain that Keith Hernandez was no longer a Met when that yearbook came out. Anyways, most of the Mets got a full page spread with a top to bottom color picture in that yearbook and a series of lightweight Playboy centerfold type questions to answer. Not as vapid as "What's your favorite color?", but not much meatier. Questions like what's your favorite movie ... what's your favorite food ... what's your favorite band or what kind of music do you listen to? Etc. You get the point. One of the questions that I think just about every Met got was along the lines of "Who's your favorite celebrity?" or "Who's the person you'd most wanna meet?" or some such variation on that theme. And almost every single Met that got that question ... just about every single Met ... answered --- Donald Trump.
  16. My only experience with this sort of thing is with the NFL. When I discovered a few years ago, that the SF radio stations that carry the 49ers games fed their broadcasts over the internet, I figgered I could listen in on the games. It worked. I think this was in 2011, Harbaugh's first season as head coach. I was surprised that I could do this because I then learned that NFL games are blocked from this sort of service because the NFL runs some pay package deal where you could, for a fee, listen to any NFL radio broadcast. One week though, as expected, the thing didn't work anymore. Instead of the game, I got some talk show. It's quirky, though. Some weeks it works, and some weeks it doesn't. Hope you found this to be helpful.
  17. Well because this leaves Bartolo Colon as officially the last Montreal Expo still active in MLB. QUIZ: Who was the last active major leaguer to have appeared in a game at Jarry Park as a member of the Expos? Gotta be Andre Dawson. He was still bringing it 20 years later. It's Andre, who barely made the cut. Dawson debuted in mid-September, 1976, Jarry Park's last season as the home of the Expos. Dawson outlasted the runner-up, Gary Carter, by about four years.

  19. Maybe the best way to challenge MLB's antitrust exemption would be for the attack to come from somewhere other than a player. Like an entity engaging in or trying to engage in MLB-related business, for example.

  21. Edgy MD wrote: Or he can file an anti-trust lawsuit. So now I'm playing out this hypothetical in my head by wondering how a player situated as deGrom is can go about filing an anti-trust suit against MLB. I'm wondering (thinking out loud here in cyberspace) if deGrom would have to refuse to sign any more contracts and sit out baseball in order to maintain that suit. Because if he's under contract and continues to play for the Mets, I'm wondering if he lacks standing to sue. Without knowing this off the top of my head and without doing any kind of research, I can come up with arguments on both sides of the issue to demonstrate that deGrom would/wouldn't have standing to sue even if he continues to play for the Mets. But if deGrom were required to sacrifice several years of his career while his lawsuit makes its way to the Supreme Court (assuming that the SC would even want to hear that case -- no guarantee) then he'd be a real martyr for this cause, and the chances that any player would challenge MLB in this fashion are slim.

  23. Good for deGrom. He's been one of baseball's best pitchers since he arrived and he's making the baseball equivalent of just about minimum wage. Question: What are his real options? What if deGrom were to, hypothetically, refuse to sign this season's contract and instead, sat out the entire season in protest? Would he still be under Mets control next year? I mean, there's no reserve clause anymore. But he still wouldn't qualify for free agency. Would he have to go through the draft again to re-enter the game? But he's not an amateur anymore, either.
  24. Remember when Clemente wore a 70's style double-knit Pirates uniform in a game at Shea in 1967? And who's "Roberto"?
  25. If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to pick up a pack of 2016 Topps Heritage baseball cards, now available all across the nation.
