I guess he could pop up and just keep going to the dugout. if you're ABLE to stay on the bag, and you ATTEMPT to stay on the bag, then you're on the bag. Werth was not able to stay on the bag. Why would Werth want to stay on the bag being that he was forced out? Again, I think the rule only requires that Werth make a slide that would allow him to touch the base should he decide to want to touch the base.

Run at the bag, slide at the bag, reach the bag. stay on the bag. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Isn't a runner allowed to slide into second and hit the bag with his hand? as long as he hangs on, which would be tough, because you're supposed to be sliding at the bag and if you're going past it on either side, you probably altered your path to get to the fielder. I don't think the runner has to hang on the bag. I think he merely has to be able to hang onto the bag.

Can't Werth claim that his momentum took him past the bag? Runners commonly overslide the base.
  5. [youtube:iot889cp]b1o4iM7ODWQ[/youtube:iot889cp] There's the play -- at about the 38 second mark. I saw the play live and in replay last night many times and I still don't know what Werth did to incur the interference call. During the game, Gary Cohen said that Werth began his slide after arriving at the bag but to my eyes, the replay does not support Gary's observation. Also, Werth was easily able to touch the bag as he slid through it. So what the hell was that call all about? Werth's slide looked about as routine as any takeout slide I've ever seen in all my life of watching baseball. The replay umps upheld the call so Werth apparently did something illegal. But I don't see it.

I don't like the number font, and the cap logo seems a little too big. But I like them. Glad I got that off my chest. I think the Marlins uniforms are genius. Off the top of my head, those unis are the best marriage of baseball, team and city. But we're definitely in the minority, I think. Uni-Watch rated all of the MLB unis a year or two ago and the Marlins unis were at or near the very bottom of the list. What's my least favorite MLB uni? I think it might be the Diamondbacks unis, which always looked incredibly infantile to me.
  7. He's saying that Harvey's a douchebag. Which any real Mets follower already knows.
  8. Staub wouldn't have wanted #4 during his second Mets tour. His preferred uni # was 10. Apparently, Duffy Dyer wasn't willing to give it up in 1972 or was never asked. So Rusty had to wait until Dyer was traded to switch from 4 to 10.
  9. PAINT IT YELLOW! They even do it for visiting players. A Stargell star marking the longest HR in Veterans Stadium history. There was also a yellow colored seat in Montreal's Olympic Stadium marking the longest HR ever hit there, also by Stargell. Stargell also hit the longest HR in Dodger Stadium history, but there's no commemoratively painted seat there, mainly because Stargell hit the ball totally out of the stadium. I'd bet anything that Jeff Wilpon doubles the price to sit in that Cespedes seat going forward before he decides to paint it yellow.
  10. The Mets should paint a yellow parakeet on that seat: The Parakeet Seat.

  13. It was once a foregone conclusion that David Wright would one day own the Mets HR franchise record -- a formality -- another achievement in the illustrious career of the Mets greatest home grown hitter. The Captain averaged over 20 HR's a year over his first 10 seasons and by age 30, had closed to within 30 HR's of Darryl Strawbery's all-time Mets mark of 252. Now battling spinal stenosis, a degenerative and progressive condition that has limited his PT and his HR prowess, Wright has hit but 20 HR's over his last three seasons combined. Now facing more uncertainty over a herniated disk in his neck, today's poll questions is ... will Wright break Strawberry's franchise HR record? If I ran the Dodgers, I'd, at the very least, give Utley two five-day contracts next season so that he can play the Mets. If I was Utley's agent, I'd try and get him revolving three, four or five day contracts with whoever happens to be playing the Mets at the time. If I could pull that off, Utley'd finish the season with 85 HR's and a record setting batting average. And the Mets would have no chance of finishing above .500.

Somehow, he doesn't have the juice to ask for a blow from Brian Snitker.Doug Sisk, who couldn't miss an important date in the wine-selling game.Mel Stottlemyer or a representative. Tejada got hurt because Muffy gave him a terrible throw and Tejada made a poor decision to turn his back on an oncoming runner, especially a known scumbag like Utley. This is exactly, exactly what I've been saying since like 10 minutes after the play happened. Only with a heck of a lot of resistance to follow. Preach on. I also agree with you about Synd's actions. In hindsight, especially with hindsight, it was a stupid, stupid thing to do. What the hell did he think he would accomplish by throwing the ball six feet behind Utley where the pitch was likelier to strike someone in the Mets dugout instead of Utley? Even without the ejections, all that pitch does is to let the Dodgers know that the incident is now over without them having to fear any meaningful retaliation.

I didn't recall that card when I assembled the cards for this thread -- even though I collected cards in '73. All those cars, and Alvarado's head is about the size of a third of a dime. Today, the player's lot (if that's what it is) would have its fair share of Ferraris and Porsches.
