If Syndergaard isn't eligible for the win, Harvey, who immediately followed Syndergaard, isn't eligible for the Save. And if Harvey isn't eligible for the Save, he couldn't have blown the Save. I don't know if I'm right but I find my logic to be flawless.
  2. Those Pujols and Cabrera contracts looked foolish from the start. On the other hand, baseball owners are supposed to be sophisticated and with resources and access to the best minds and data out there to evaluate contracts. So what gives here? Did they screw-up, by not seeing what was apparent to any reasonably sentient seasoned baseball fan? Maybe they were counting on baseball revenues to continue to increase at the same recent explosive rate for the foreseeable future. Or maybe mass inflation. I dunno.
  3. bmfc1 wrote: The first time I sat behind the netting, it was distracting for a few innings and then I didn't notice. If someone says that it blocks their view, they can move upstairs. Agree. Same experience. After a short while, it's as if the netting's not even there. bmfc1 wrote: The little girl's family should be able to get Otani $ from the MFYs because the MFYs knew of the risk and failed to act. The MFYs will say that the family contributed to the negligence by sitting there despite the absence of the netting. However, even the Court agrees, in NY (unlike, e.g., Maryland) Plaintiff’s damages will be reduced by their own liability, but not barred completely. NY CPLR § 1411 (2012). Despite CPLR § 1411, the assumption of the risk defense will likely bar the entire claim. https://www.leagle.com/decision/2002767300ad2d4671246 http://www.nycourts.gov/reporter/3dseries/2005/2005_01696.htm
  4. And during the seventh inning stretch, they're gonna shoot David Wright out of a cannon and onto a trampoline 100 feet away, where Wright will then do a few mid air back flips while bouncing up and down on the trampoline.
  5. The problem with this year's Mets is that in order to win a pennant, you hafta think that you ain't as good as you think you are. Wow!
  6. Centerfield wrote: You have to protect people from themselves. The cost-benefit here is a slam dunk. That's why I think it's a no-brainer. Cost-benefit in favor of more netting is not a slam-dunk. Not by a zillion miles. If there's one thing these soulless corporate bean counters that run MLB know how to do is to count the beans. If this was a slam dunk, every millimeter of every MLB stadium would be wrapped up in netting. Then, on top of that, they'd put every attending fan inside of their own personal net. From a legal standpoint, MLB could probably avoid liability in almost every instance of a fan being struck by batted ball or broken bat based on an assumption of the risk defense.
  7. I've always liked the Marlins HR sculpture. But I came to a newly discovered realization after reading this thread: I think that I also like the Grooms piece because subconsciously, I figured that the Wilpons could never come up with something like that. If the Wilpons were hypothetically forced to display the Grooms thing at Citi Field, they'd probably debase it. The philistines woudl stick a huge Coca Cola logo ad on it.
  8. G-Fafif wrote: It's the tucking in of the jersey that gets me, though because Joe did tuck, we get a gander at that hellacious buckle. I noticed that buckle, too. Also, how quickly the Mets moved to take the Jets logo off of the big scoreboard, although on second thought, the Jets weren't playing no January football in 1975, either.

  19. Up for a baseball quiz? 17 one-time Mets haven't appeared in an MLB game since the 2016 season. Name them. One guess per post. Two-in-a-rowing is permitted.

We were discussing whether Harvey should sign a long term contract or wait for his inevitable big free agent payday. I suggested that given Harvey's medical history, it wouldn't be a bad idea for him to sign a contract in 2015. That contract wouldn't have been as lucrative as his FA contract, had he continued to enjoy relatively good health going forward, but it would have eliminated a lot of health risk going forward, especially given Harvey's TJ history. The Mets locked up Lagares, and Lagares has been a disappointment (and injured often). The Mets locked up Wright, and Wright hasn't been able to perform. The Mets reportedly talked to Duda about a long-term deal after he came off his best year and Duda apparently demurred. It doesn't seem these things ever quite work out for team and player simultaneously. That's not necessarily a trend or pattern, just makes one realize how iffy picking what's behind the curtain as opposed to what's inside the box can be. True. Of course, for Harvey to have signed a contract in 2015, the Mets would have had to offer one. The Mets didn't. Was that because the Mets had no interest in locking up Harvey then, or because Team Harvey sent out unambiguous signals that Harvey had no interest in committing?

  23. smg58 wrote: I don't remember anybody objecting when the Wright extension happened. If anything, people were relieved that the Mets were still willing to commit money to somebody. They're too cheap, except when they aren't, in which case they didn't have the balls to say no. I was dead set against the Wright re-signing from the get-go. I thought Wright was past his prime at 30, and that his risk of future serious injury was significantly increased because the back injury he had already sustained was typically, progressive. But this alone, wasn't what turned me off the Wright re-signing. It was that, plus that the Mets were a dreadful, abysmal team in 2012, easily three years from respectability, I thought. The combination of those factors, I thought, made the Wright re-signing just pointless from a competitive point of view. When you're three years away from anything, a high-priced 30 year old with a serious injury history is the last kind of guy you'd want to sign to a long-term top dollar contract. I would've rathered Sandy work his magic and get a young superstud for Wright --- a superstud who'd hopefully be an all-star making peanuts money baseball-wise, today. I also panned the Mets for letting Dickey go that season, but mainly because I thought the move was necessitated by the Mets poverty more than anything else. I guess I was challenging the Mets motives. I was on board with the Dickey trade before the 2013 season started, once I absorbed Syndergaard's press clippings.
  24. The UMBD 2017 Mets page lists a "Nick Carr". Who's that? http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/metannual.php?ThisYear=2017
