  1. John Cumberland, Mets minor league pitching coach in the 1980s (Doc Gooden and David West were two of his many charges), died in April at 74. Cumberland pitched well for the 1971 NL West champion Giants and was one of the rare major leaguers from Maine — facts that raced back to my consciousness from my childhood when I learned of his passing. I missed this post when it first went up. You don't say about Cumberland and 1971. I played the '71 Strat-o-Matic set for many years. It was my first and main set. And in the '71 NL, I remember, there were two "under the radar" pitchers that were terrific assets to have in a draft league, but lacking the big name recognizability, even in those times. Bruce Kison was one and Cumberland was the other. Well, the Giants won their division in '71 and a team usually doesn't do that by getting good performances from just their stars. Cumberland was pretty good in '71. And then of course, they had two HOF pitchers in Marichal and Perry, too.
  2. Good reporting. I could swear I already told you that in this thread before. Eight games and 22 at-bats is all Justin Ruggiano would get out of his brief and fringy stint in the orange and blue. Whachyouse got on Justin, pictured below in a Typewriter Total 2016 Mets set, code named Sludge? And do check out the perspective foreshortening on Justin's baseball bat. His head appears to be longer than his baseball bat. Is that even a baseball bat or is Justin holding a long can of beer? Sorry. I shoot for funny, sometimes I hit douchy by mistake. Hey Lunchy! You at least, get an apology. No doubling down here.
  4. Let's rock 'n roll again. Today's fringy Met is also a recidivist Met. One lone at-bat in 2002 when the Mets called Shea Stadium their home and then a few dozen more in 2010 right across the parking lot at Citi Field. Whachyouse got on Gary Matthews, Jr. pictured on a Typewriter 2010 Rock and Roll trading card? [FIMG=400]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52163526229_5b72c97da8_h.jpg[/FIMG]
  5. Seaver and Koufax's MLB careers never overlapped, just noting what everybody here already knows. Koufax retired after the 1966 season and Seaver debuted after making the Mets 1967 opening day roster. They just missed each other.
  6. This past weekend, and in the same season that the Mets unveiled their statue of Tom Seaver, the Dodgers unveiled their statue of Sandy Koufax. Koufax had to wait longer than Seaver did for his statue, but at least he got to see it. 7. Holy Moley, Edgy! I think we've discovered your niche. Fringe Mets. This stuff is great. I think you know more about Haggerty than Haggerty himself. I remember the base running stuff (look at Sam's card; he's taking a lead off a base) but nothing about Syracuse. Whachyouse got on P.J. Conlon, fringy Mets reliever pictured on a 2018 Typewriter Total Mets Set - Code Name: Puppet, Pauper, Pirate, Poet, Pawn and King [FIMG=400]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52161072586_6e3a022d8c_b.jpg[/FIMG]
  8. Sam Haggerty was a Cleveland Indian prospect who finally broke through as a major leaguer in 2019 with the Mets But after four at-bats, he was a goner, his place on the fringes of Mets history firmly engraved. He's remained in the majors every season since, never accumulating more than a few dozen at bats in any season, fortifying his fringiness. Picture on Typewriter's beloved 2019 total Mets set, code named Holy Curt Gowdy!, whachyouse got on Haggerty? [FIMG=455]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52161175159_07d6fd03e0_c.jpg[/FIMG]
  9. Edgy MD wrote: A 2013 opening day grand slam, along with a double earlier in the game, provided about 90% of his Mets value. A pointless double L in both his first and last names gave him a reputation as a notorious L-hoarder, and that is believed to have contributed to the thinking behind his mid-season trade I'm declaring you the winner of the Cowgill fringe contest. I mean, what else is there on Cowgill? I probably conflated Cowgill and Teagarden because they both hit grand slams in their first games as a Met. [media=youtube]V9ilKWJpd_E[/media] [media=youtube]hVvG0kWhm6E[/media] Catch the theme? Grand Slam Sunday? Grand Slam Debuts? At Citi Field? This guy? [media=youtube]G8xjTplR57o[/media]
  10. If Teagarden stumped youse, maybe this fringy Met won't. Colin Cowgill's sizzling spring training earned him a spot on the Mets 25 man Opening Day roster in 2013 and also, an Opening Day start. But 61 at bats later, he was a goner, relegated to fringe Met history. Me, I sometimes conflate Cowgill with our previous fringer, Teagarden. Maybe it's that they each have compound worded last names, I dunno. Pictured here on a Typewriter 2013 Total Mets set trading card, code named The Wonderama (or Has Anybody Here Got an Aardsma?), whachyouse got on Cowgill? [FIMG=355]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52161330915_161333be2b_h.jpg[/FIMG]
  11. It's Grand Slam Sunday here at T.C.G. and today's fringe Met is Taylor Teagarden, the eight game Met, pictured on a 2014 Total Mets set, code name: Welcome to Kiner's Korner. I'm Ralph Korner. Whatchyouse got? [FIMG=344]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52158808043_4322a303ca_h.jpg[/FIMG]
  12. Our interloper was Les Rohr, who was traded by the Mets to the Brewers. Rohr didn't know it at the time, but on the day he was traded to Milwaukee, he had already played his last major league baseball game. The Mets turned out to be the only team Rohr would play for in the majors. Thank you for playing.
  13. It was the end of the line for this fringe Met who, by the time he put on the blue and orange, was playing on fumes only, his gas tank practically empty and the needle in the red. Just a few weeks in a Mets uni and then retirement. His career, in the main, was well documented though, much of it played under intense scrutiny and a bright spotlight. So whachyouse got on fringe Met Rick Ankiel, pictured below on a 2013 Typewriter Total Mets set card, code named The Wonderama (or Has Anybody Here Got an Aardsma?) [FIMG=400]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52155829596_0455fa5191_h.jpg[/FIMG]
  14. =smg58 post_id=96499 time=1655558727 user_id=62]unpacking. Why do I have zero recall of Jeff Conine being a Met?
  15. J.D. Davis's single last night was the game's hardest hit ball -- harder hit than even Lindor or Alonso's HR's. This, on the heels of an article in The Athletic to the effect that Davis has been hitting the baseball extremely hard all season long, about as hard as practically anybody in all of baseball, and that the Mets remain very confident in Davis despite his slow statistical start, which the Mets are attributing to random bad luck.

  21. Ostrosser is card #7 in Typewriter Chewing Gum's Tobacco card style 1974 set, sponsored by Dairylea. The cards were available only by mail by sending in coupons clipped from Dairylea products. The cards came in uncut strips of five cards. Ostrosser was the second card of the second panel. [FIMG=344]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52153940608_f077dfc1d.jpg[/FIMG]

  24. Rich Puig is commonly, and mistakenly, pronounced so as to rhyme with Bitch (Captain) Queeg. But Rich Puig is correctly pronounced to rhyme with Dick Twig. It's pronounced Rick Pwig. And nobody has ever answered this question correctly. So now the secret's out.
