  1. True, a little bit of the hitting we had for two days in Arizona would have won us most of the games this week. But everybody remembers when the closer doesn't get the job done. Takatsu would be the one charged with the blown save for the 10th. I wouldn't be against using Heilman or Bert as the closer the rest of the way, but Looper is officially a lame duck as it is. Besides, Heilman would have to pass Takatsu on the depth chart...
  2. Watch Beltran try to steal third with Wright up.
  3. I'm not sure what happened to Petit in his last start to bring his ERA up to 9, but it couldn't have been good. Then again, didn't Seo have a 12-run game shortly before he got promoted?I see no reason to hurry Petit. It will be hard to make room for him next year because Glavine appears to be unmoveable, but as long as Glavine is pitching OK I can live with that. Glavine's contract runs out next year, Petit takes over his spot. Hopefully it's that simple.
  4. Takatsu was a September callup, who would still be pitching for the White Sox if he were any good, and Willie brings him into TWO absolutely critical bases loaded situations? I guess he didn't take enough heat for the first one. Willie shows no confidence in a guy who pitched a one-hitter for him earlier in the year, but keeps showing confidence in a guy who keeps proving he's not up to the job. Takatsu will get Willie run out of New York if he's not careful. And maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing. As for Looper, he just punched his one-way ticket himself. I was kind of doubtful his option would get picked up even before tonight, but now, forget it.
  5. Beltran reminds me a bit of Robbie Alomar. Granted, Alomar was in his mid-30's when he came here, but he was mediocre without any obvious reason for it, and that has been Beltran in a nutshell too. I wasn't expecting massive power numbers, but this? I can't imagine he won't be better next year, but something tells me not to expect him to abruptly return to being an elite player.
  6. Tell me what each of those players could get me, and I'll tell you if I'd move them. I think we should make sure there's room for Milledge and Petit on the Opening Day 2007 roster, if not sooner. But other than those two, Wright, and Pedro, everyone else could at least be asked about.I think they have an option on Ishii and the Dodgers would pick up the buyout, so I would work under the assumption that he's gone. What are the details of Trachsel's contract? I'm under the impression the option would be for $2.5M plus incentives based on IP, but I can't verify that. If that's true, he might be very desirable to other teams, but his 10/5 would kick in if we pick up the option, giving him a full veto.I'm not sure Diaz hits well enough to make up for his glove, and I'm not sold on him drawing very many walks unless he bats eighth. I see him as a good bat to have in reserve, but if another team sees him as more than that I'm listening to their offer.
  7. I'm afraid to ask, but where did you find that one? It's hilarious.
  8. From what I recall of Koo, he was very unsuccessful when brought in as a LOOGY, and that probably impacts the resuls significantly. I don't even have a problem with being careful with younger guys if/when it's feasible; I have a problem with giving more responsibility to a veteran who's "proven" that he's not any good.
  9. I have a rules question on the Castro play. It's perfectly OK for a catcher to run after the ball and then make an appeal to first base? Castro would have made it to first if it had been called immediately, and judging from the replay, he had no reason to think that he didn't check his swing. As far as the more critical play... we can argue who the right person in that spot was, or that Hernandez was a bad matchup, but bringing in a call-up who had gotten unceremoniously dumped from his previous team to make his first appearance with you with the bases loaded and two out against one of the five best hitters in the league? ANYBODY else would have been a less arguable option.
  10. Randolph's unwillingness to show confidence in his younger guys goes well beyond the bullpen. Remember if Cameron had been healthy to start the season, Wright would have hit eighth. I don't like it either. The thing is, there's enough upside there that the Mets could win next year with a supporting cast of Heilman, Padilla, Bell, Santiago, Hamulack, and Ring. They need the right guy on top, not guys who earned their demotions or unconditional releases from other teams to come in and block better players.
  11. Has he said where the party will be if the Mets break 90?
  12. Castro has looked very good with the bat recently, but his carrer numbers suggest this might be an illusion. Still, I see no reason not to bring him back next year; the question then is with who else. Deal for a rookie, like Shoppach or Ryan Garko? Deal for Pudge, if the Tigers just give him away? Sign Ramon Hernandez? Platoon Castro with Jacobs? As for Piazza, it's certainly possible that his bat could be rejeuvenated at least somewhat by not catching, and given that there aren't a whole lot of standout DH's, I'm sure some AL team will see enough upside to take a small risk with him, like a year at 2 or 3 million.
  13. I get the impression that the worst case scenario for Anderson Hernandez would be the same level of offense we've gotten out of second base this year, plus speed and better defense. He won't have any pop in his bat, but neither does Cairo, and Hernandez has shown a bit of improvement in the walks department.Likewise, I can't see Jacobs giving the Mets any less offense at first than they've put up with all year. But if you give those two a chance, you'll need to upgrade other places.
  14. Haven't they heard? The Mets don't need a first baseman!I might say yes to Kelly Shoppach, though.
  15. Oh, and who the hell is Ed Bouchee?
  16. I think it's a little too easy to read ulterior motives into every questionable decision the team makes. It could just be that Randolph went with his gut, even if his gut disagrees with all of ours.I've said before that I like Zambrano and feel bad for him, and this only makes me feel worse. I also feel bad for Trachsel, too, because he doesn't deserve this. But like I've also said before, the decision is made, and we have to root for it to be the right one. Or at least for Zambrano to do well.
  17. In short, there are very good reason why the Royals have the record that they have. Maybe priority #1 for them should be infield defense...
  18. Rotblatt wrote:I hope he comes up to stay in September and beats the shit out of the ball.Against Philadelphia and Florida, that is. But you always have to root for somebody like that.
  19. Obviously if there's any doubt about Benson, dealing now is no option. Funny how six starters can seem like not enough sometimes.
  20. Matsui's had more experience at center, at least recently. It doesn't hurt the Yankees, that's for sure. So they're committed to Bernie at DH and Giambi at first? Or is Bernie just a sub at this point?
  21. Well, have Mets fans had any reason to be optimistic until recently? If the Mets were consistently winning 90-100 games, we'd be brimming with optimism.
  22. I think we have to accept that he's sticking around. He's logging enough innings to suggest that he'll get the 200 IP and the full contract. At least he's been pitching well lately. So he stays and keeps a seat warm for Petit. Not my first choice, but if he earns it with a strong finish I'll live with it.That still leaves one unset spot in next year's rotation, the way I see it. Do you try to deal Zambrano? (Do you try to do it before Sept. 1?) Do you pick up Trachsel's option, or buy him out? Do you make room for either Heilman or Bannister? Do you try to outbid people for Burnett?
  23. OK, everybody exhale...
  24. I'm worried this is one batter too many.
  25. I was at the double debacle myself. I remember baking through two games and not being all that happy afterwards. We stopped being a contender that day. Perhaps we started again these past two days?I remember Fonzie getting a would-have-been GW homer in the 8th inning of game 1, then leaving for a stint on the DL during which the Mets lost 12 straight in his absence. And yet he was the first guy to go.There were so many miscues that first game, but Benitez seemed to get all the blame for both losses, even though he didn't pitch the second one.I remember talking with somebody during the second game, which was John Thomson's first start as a Met. The guy asked what I thought of Thomson, and I said I liked him so far, he was throwing strikes and not fooling around. Then he walked the pitcher to lead off the next inning, and all hell broke lose...
