  1. Bagwell's been pinch-hitting, but I don't know if he's been running the bases. If he can do that, I'd think they'd have to use him as the DH.
  2. Kudos to the Astros for bouncing back. That was no small accomplishment. Lidge pitched five innings in five days, and he actually started to look fatigued in game 4 but got out of it. Garner opted not to pitch him if he didn't need to, and now he'll be more than adequately rested for the WS. The Astros got a big break psychologically from the Mulder wild pitch, I think. Being handed the lead had to ease the pressure a lot.
  3. I too have to vote no. Good luck tomorrow SH.
  4. Dear God, now I'm Pepe Mangual. I first got baseball cards back in 1976, and two of the first Met cards I got were for Del Unser and Wayne Garrett. Imagine my shock and horror when my Dad tells me they just got traded for some guy named Pepe Mangual. Should I be embarrassed that I remember that detail?
  5. I can remember somebody in the preseason for ESPN.com listing the best and worst moves of the offseason. The first item in his worst moves list was the Cardinals signing Eckstein. Some people just refuse to get it. Lidge has been worked a lot, and looked fatigued last night while barely escaping. He threw two great pitches to Eckstein to go 1-2, but Eckstein did a great job of defensive hitting. Then I knew Lidge was in trouble. If he had anything left in the tank, he would have at least made Edmonds hit his way on. His only hope at that point was that Pujols would just miss, and, well, that didn't happen. I guess there is joy in Mudville tonight. Mighty Casey delivered. Big time.
  6. After the reports that Beltran and Pedro were using us for leverage and had no interest in coming here, I take no reports about a player's wishes seriously. We'll have competition for anybody we pursue; that's not news. I still think Giles has the most value (dollar for dollar) of anybody in the market, and even Shea will look like a hitters park after two years in Petco. We'd need to make room for him first, though.

It would become a major issue for me if he insisted on four years. The concern with Ryan is how much do you offer somebody based on one big year (see Adrian Beltre). I'd talk to both, but there would be a limit to what I'd offer. Regarding the Kazmir deal: funny, but I always assumed that Wilpons demanded two major-league starters before the deadline by any means necessary, because it was the only explanation that made sense to me. I can't back that up with any evidence, so I was merely speculating. It seems like everybody else has their own theory on this too. I see no point on getting overly angry with any Met coach/official/player over this, because everything reported on it has been rumor and none of us know what really happened. I see even less value in being angry at each other over this.
  8. The Astros bullpen, by contrast, has worked very hard. That might actually work to their advantage if they can wrap the NLCS up quickly, because the Sox pen will have gone nearly two weeks without any meaningful innings.
  9. Wow, the age difference between Ryan and Wagner is a lot less than I realized. It's not an easy call; I think you have to set a value for the two of them above which you wouldn't go, and then stick to it. But Gordon just strikes me as a waste of time.
  10. I'd give Heilman a chance first.
  11. I forgot about Estrada. Watch Schuerholz get more than he's worth for him. Yes Jacobs is an injury risk too, but he's an in-house option and would cost nothing. I'm guessing that Ramon Hernandez could still command 7 or 8 million a year, and I'm not sure he's worth that cost. Piazza... he may yet turn out to be the best option, but I would examine several other alternatives before him.

Because there's still a remote chance somebody will offer him a starting pitcher's salary for next year. I'd feel bad for the fans of whatever team would do that, but it wouldn't surprise me if Leiter tests the market before making a decision.
  13. Any clues why both games would be played simultaneously today, when in general that never happens?
  14. We bought out Vaughn's last year this season, although I'm not sure when the deferments start kicking in and to what degree. I'm for spending wisely. I don't believe we need to, or should, spend like the Yankees. Having said that, the Mets are freeing up a healthy amount of payroll, so if they find the right fit money should not be an object.
  15. It looked in the extreme close-up like the ball may have bounced up into the catcher's mitt, so I'm not sure it's as cut and dried as the announcers made it out to be, but I'd hate to WIN a game like that, much less lose it.
  16. I don't like the free agent catching options out there. Hernandez is too much of an injury risk for the price he'll command. Ideally a Jacobs/Castro platoon would be more than adequate offensively, provided Jake can field the position at least passably, while enabling us to spend our money and bargaining chips elsewhere. Otherwise, young guys like Shoppach, Ryan Garko, and Dioner Navarro should be available. I'd rather serve youth at catcher and spend the money for a bat or two and possibly a closer.
  17. PS A great play by Erstad to boot.
  18. THE YANKEES ARE DEAD!!!!
  19. I think they asked for Milledge and/or Petit in July. The price may go down this coming July, because this is his out year, but I wouldn't blame them for demanding a lot for players they still control, and for getting the most out of their good players while they have them unless somebody makes them an offer they can't refuse. The strategy did get them Kazmir. However, at some point they really do have to spend some money...
  20. I agree too. I don't think we have seen enough AB's to judge Victor Diaz, much less Jacobs. If Jacobs can field as a catcher at all, he'd be less of a risk there than at first base. Still, I do think he's earned the right to at least compete for a starting spot.
  21. The Brewers have a team option on Lee. I'd be surprised if they don't pick it up. I think the best value free agent is Brian Giles, but we'd still have to make room for him even though he can play right.
  22. Gotta pull for the underdogs. An Astros win would be doubly impressive given the way their season started.
  23. That's interesting, as the top two catchers play for teams whose AAA clubs also had catchers with big years. Kelly Shoppach has been mentioned a lot, but does anybody know what the Indians plan to do with Ryan Garko?
  24. You're welcome as far as I'm concerned. But can you take St. Louis this time?
  25. OlerudOwned wrote: If you have a lump of money that could go to Furcal or Konerko, where do you want it? Hmm. The concern for me with Konerko is that he'd be moving from a park that is quite generous to righty power hitters to one that is not so generous. I could see him giving us numbers like we got from Floyd this year, which is nothing to sneeze at, but we'd have to win a bidding war with at least the Yankees and the Red Sox to get him, and it could wind up like Beltran where even the best case scenario is worth less than we pay to sign him. Furcal could easily command what Renteria got (4 years, $40M). Pricey, and we may also have to compete with Boston for him assuming Furcal would play second, but I'd lean more towards him on the assumption that he and one of the other first base options could provide more offense for less total money than Konerko and any other second base option.
