  1. In as well.
  2. Maybe instead of an auction, each owner has two minutes to place one bid on a player, and whoever bids the highest gets him?

Alderson appears to be waiting and seeing as far as that lefty outfield spot on the bench goes. Either that, or he thinks Mike Baxter is good enough. I hope its the former.
  4. Do we have a head count? Not sure I'd want to do two nights a draft, but I'll go with it if that works better for most of us. I'd vote for standard 5x5 for simplicity, but the other options are intriguing too and I'd be OK with whatever is voted for.
  5. Since I don't think anything's been settled, welcome abordick!
  6. That might be too random, especially if we want to keep most of the players after this season. Plus you'd need to be on some sort of honors system. But if we have a large number of players drafting 40-man teams, some means of shortening the draft might be necessary.
  7. Auction bidding for 40-player teams could take a long while, too. And we would all have to be there. Unless you have everybody submit one bid per player, like you would for a guy on the waiver wire?
  8. Sounds like fun.
  9. It's too early to assess the wins and losses from this offseason. Personally I don't think Reyes will be worth his contract, and I'm fairly certain that Capuano won't. A few of the "losses" were of negligible cost. (Mike Antonini has a chance of giving the Dodgers more than the Mets got from Hu, mainly because Hu gave the Mets nothing, but he wasn't a mystery to AA hitters for the third straight year.) When you throw a bunch of cheap gambles on the wall, it only takes one or two of them to stick to be a net win. I'd put the Beltran-for-Wheeler deal as a solid win right now because it didn't really hurt us, it didn't help the Giants enough, and the long-term upside is huge. I think the K-Rod deal is a push. It certainly hurt our pen more than we thought it would and it's not clear that we got anything, but doing nothing and paying K-Rod $17M this year would still have been worse.
  10. I can't think of any opposing player whose success against the Mets was more frustrating. At least Larry hit like that against other teams too.
  11. The fact that the Mets are looking for a lefthanded outfielder makes dropping F-Mart very curious. We're going to need to free up another spot on the 40 to make room for one anyway (unless Nieuwenhuis makes the team), so why not sign one of these guys to a minor-league contract at least give Martinez the chance to play his way onto the club or off the roster in Spring Training?.

(I'm almost 50, and I can't remember Doug Flynn hitting) I have no memory of Doug Flynn hitting, either. Although thanks to Flynn, I learned at a young age that when a team's front office goes out of their way to draw attention to a player's defensive value, it really says more about his hitting. In Rey's defense (no pun intended), his 1999 was as good a year with the glove as anybody I'm aware of has ever had. Yeah, it would have taken a full career of that to make his bat tolerable, but he does have that.
  13. The trade rumors around Murphy earlier in the offseason seemed to involve reserve outfielders (like Andy Dirks of the Tigers), which would be selling very low rather than high. Plus, somebody has to play third base when the Mets trade Wright.
  14. Edgy's right. And given how the status quo looks, a little volatility might not be such a bad thing.
  15. In terms of WAR, we're about three wins behind the Braves, Phillies, and Marlins, and on an even keel with the Nats. Apparently, the difference could be made up simply by Duda being close to average in right field. In other words, I hope he's worked like hell on his defense over the offseason. Bay's bat showing up would erase the difference, too.

  17. I'm cool with a keeper league. Since I don't think we've ever had a draft where everybody could get to their computer at the same time, I don't see how getting everybody into the same real room at the same time is feasible. I've never tried auction style, but would be willing.
  18. They seem to be haggling over an extra year -- but in the reverse of what you would usually expect. Darvish wants five years (to test free agency sooner), the Rangers want to give him six (presumably because the bidding fee looks less obscene if it buys six years instead of five).
  19. batmagadanleadoff wrote: If Met pitchers can't pitch in CF II, that'll say more about their mediocrity than about the new dimensions. I don't think the new dimensions will turn the place into a hitter's park, but what barely passed as mediocrity last year could look a lot worse this year.
  20. The Mets offense really is better than a lot of people think, the absence of a leadoff hitter notwithstanding. They outscored the Phillies last year in spite of the park, losing Davis for most of the year, another off year from Wright, and getting basically nothing from Bay. Pitching and defense are other matters entirely, however. I fear that bringing in the walls will expose our pitchers more than it helps our hitters. You would have to think the park is the only reason Wright and Bay have underproduced to think this will work in our favor with the team as it's currently structured, and I just don't see it. I'm not expecting miracles from Murphy at second, but I'm not expecting anything biblical in the other direction either. He'll be below average, but we haven't been above average at second since Valentin in 06 and Murphy can at least hit. I'm much more worried about Duda.
  21. They just reached with Acosta, which cleans the slate.
  22. Joel Piniero is going to the Phillies, apparently on a minor-league deal. Yes he was awful last year, but I'd have still given him a million or two if that was all it took.
  23. He also was a bit homer-prone, so the ballpark switch could hut him more than it would most pitchers. Pineda had a 103 ERA+ last year, so it's not like he's been super elite right out of the box. Yes he's a young guy with a lot of upside, and the Reds gave up more to get Mat Latos, but Montero has similar upside too. If the Mariners learn from the Angels' mistakes regarding Mike Napoli, they won't be too quick to dismiss his value as a catcher.
  24. I have to think that anybody with an opening at first base or DH is looking at Fielder, and there are enough teams with openings that other teams who don't but have the cash might be looking to snag him and then trade the guy they have. But that's what makes it different from Madson's case, and more curious. Madson had trouble because the supply of closers exceeded the demand. The reverse is true at first base, and yet teams have been coy with Fielder.
  25. I think a lot of GMs just assumed that Madson was beyond their price range. Now he's getting less than the sum of Rauch and Francisco's salaries, and Rauch was sub-replacement level last year. I don't know if Alderson felt he had to act quickly after Reyes signed with Miami, but his aggressiveness in addressing the bullpen may have backfired. I'm not sure what's up with Fielder. My gut tells me the Yankees will jump in on this. If they give him 160 million reasons to spend the next seven years DHing, he'll be OK with it.
