  1. In today's game at Binghamton, Lastings went 2-4, with 2 dingers and 3 RBI. No K's. He's now hitting .430-something. I read they're going to keep him at AA because the PCL is in their 3 day ASG break. They must feel the extra at bats (Lastings is batting leadoff) would be more beneficial than fewer at bats against AAA competition after a 3 day layoff. Later
  2. Thanks. Kid. If it didn't end up in my spam folder (haven't checked it lately) I'll probably get it next week. Later
  3. Alaska's not far enough away. Later
  4. I recall there was one year during that time when the fans voted and the Cincy fans stuffed the ballot box. Almost every Red including the bat boys made the ASG. The one exception was - Musial made the team. Later

  6. Lastings homered in his first at bat for Binghamton tonight. Later
  7. Edgy DC wrote: Annual question: Are we grading them productivity relative to expectation (B- for Wright, F for Delgado) or productivity relative to the league (A or A- for Wright, D for Delgado)? How has this been answered before? Was there agreement among the CPF-ers? In school, its grading to whether or not the pupil got the answer correct. IMO, grading to the league is like grading on a curve. There may be some players who are having very good years, but will never have the same numbers as another player at the same position. (e.g. - A healthy Moises Alou would put up some pretty good numbers, but would never put up numbers like the year Miguel Cabrera is having) I'd go with grading to expectations. Later
  8. The season's half over. Time for your scorecards. What grade would you give to each of the Mets? (Please use school grades, A,B,C,D,F ) Later
  9. From this weel's Baseball America hot sheet: ]Timo Perez, of, Triple-A Toledo (Tigers) Many will remember Perez from his playoff run with the 2000 Mets, during which he tied the NLCS record with eight runs scored. An IL all-star this season, the 32-year-old Perez has hit .314/.353/.492 this season with a league-leading 29 doubles. Along with sluggers like Mike Hessman, Chris Shelton and Ryan Raburn, Perez has made a Toledo three-peat a distinct possibility. Later
  10. Those high minor league OBP numbers make me believe he could become the next Jeff Keppinger. BTW- Edgy - nice thread title. Later
  11. I think we can chalk this one up to "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned". Later
  12. Cynthia Rodriguez must want her hubby to be traded to Baltimore: http://www.nypost.com/seven/07022007/news/regionalnews/mrs__a_rod_is_a_bronx_f_bomber_regionalnews_dan_mangan_and_david_k__li.htm Later

  15. No irony intended. We have commented here during the Mets' recent slump about how lifeless they have looked. (Other words have been used) I'm just saying that this move (the steal attempt) is what McCarver would call an "error of enthusiasm". And I believe an injection of enthusiasm is what the club needed during its recent doldrums and Lastings certainly plays the game enthusiastically. That's all. Later
  16. He played his first post-injury game last night for the Mets GCL team. He was the DH. He went 1 - 3. The hit was a double. Then he got thrown out trying to steal third. Y'know? That's some of the kind of spirit the team seems to have been missing recently. Later
  17. I don't have the records in front of me, but IIRC, Thomas started his career with 7 or 8 consecutive years of .300BA, 20+ HR, 100 R and 100 RBI. (or something like that - maybe 100BB, too. I may be off by a stat or two.) He was the only major leaguer other than Gehrig to do that. Those are the kinds of counting stats that many of the writer still use to judge players. But he went into a decline quickly because of health. After that, he tried to play hurt (no pun intended), but his numbers never reached his early ones. And he could no longer play the field. Even when healthy, he was only a 2 tool player. (Hit, hit for power) That keeps him from the HOF in my mind, by a narrow margin. Biggio, on the other hand, played three different positions -key defensive up the middle ones - second base, catcher and center field. And he played them all well. Plus, he's a gritty type pf player who is four away from the record for career HBP. I would vote for him. Later
  18. Thanks, Monk. Did she get the dad's name? I've never been able to find out if Tim is related to ex-SF relief pitcher Alan "Red" Worthington. Red was a very religious person, and doing charity work rebuilding New Orleans sounds like something he would get involved in. Later
  19. Actually, he's in High A (St. Lucie): http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Worthington%2520&pos=P&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=457427 Later

  21. When LoDuca goes on suspension, the Mets will have to either go with Valentin as the emergency catcher for two days or send someone down and recall an experienced backup. Also- my kid Worthington is no longer in extended Spring Training. He pitched for one of the low A teams the other night. (See adoptees) Later
  22. Just noticed his name in a minor league box score (Mets A ball team). He last pitched in the organization in 2005, where he was a very effective reliever. I followed his numbers for a while. Then, he dropped off the map. Welcome back, kid. Later
  23. Someone much have once told him he's clever. That was a futile attempt. Later

Or that Japanese baseball isn't as far below the current level of play in the majors as some may think. Shinjo proved as much 6 years ago. Yoshii 8 years ago. I said "position players". Yes, Shinjyo's (approx) .250 avg was comparable to his numbers in Japan, but his stay here was brief. It was subject to the "let's see what he does the second time around" qualifiers. So has been here about 5 years, so the numbers have had a chance to normalize. Later
  25. I read that Lastings will play his first rehab game in low A ball tonight. If he shows that he is healthy, he might be recalled so that Gomez can (as they used to say ) "get more seasoning". Of course, Lastings may also be used as a trading chip in the rumored trade for a pitcher. (Buherle or Contraras of the ChiSox) Later
