  1. Oddly enough ... William Hurlbut is also the name of the guy who wrote Bride of Frankenstein. Bride of Frankenstein. GOOOOOD! The remake could star Suzyn Waldmann - without any special makeup. Seriously, from David Waldstein's column about Carter's grandpa attending last night's game: Bill Carter was going to sit in the family section on Tuesday night, which is not all that close to home plate. But when the Indians heard that Carter is legally blind, they provided him and Baker with seats behind home plate normally used by scouts. Classy move by the Indians. Later
  2. Its refreshing to see that a WSJ reporter talked about a player nicknamed "Animal" because of his aggressive nature, who majored in Human Biology, hits long home runs and the writer never alluded to steroids. (Of course they have no place in this article about how bright Carter is.) But I'm guessing that at least one of the local writers would have made an awful joke about it if they had written the same piece. Later
  3. Huh? Roy Face was listed as 5'8", 155. The only pitcher I ever remember being listed as shorter was Freddie Norman (5'7") and I'm not sure if he ever faced the Mets. Later
  4. Shortest/ lightest - El Roy Face? Later

Satchell Paige last beat the Yankees September 16, 1953. He was 47 years and a little over two months old. Jamie Moyer is 47 and about seven months. Frayed Knot is reporting the ESPN angle. I don't think he's claiming it necessarily comes from the Yankees' PR department. I know he is, but it was also reported on the MFY post game wrap up show. ESPN may not have researched it first. Anyhow, thanks for the Wilhelm and Paige facts. Later
  6. Since their records are so significant to the history of the universe, I'm surprised there isn't a UMFYDB for public access. That way, we could check and see if Hoyt Wilhelm or Satchel Paige ever beat the Yanks in the last years of their careers. I'd love to catch their PR department in an error. Later
  7. I'm with Voltaire: If Mr. Met did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him. Absolutely. I think I love Mr. Met more than I love anyone outside of my immediate family. So... you lied to me? The jilted lover is always the last to know. Later
  8. Don't know for sure, but I remember first really noticing Mr. Met in Bill Gallo cartoons in the paper. Don't know if the was the creator or a fast follower. Later
  9. He injured his shoulder, and will be out for "a few weeks". Don't know how it happened or the specific nature of the injury. Later

    Chip Watch

One side of me says that after his final game this year I'd gladly drive him to the airport, then accompany him on his flight to his place of retirement, then escort him to his house and then NAIL THE DOOR SHUT FROM THE OUTSIDE. (I draw the line at setting the place on fire.) But the other side of me says I want Chipper to play out the remaining two or three year of his contract, with his skills declining drastically and his salary a drain on the Braves coffers, preventing them from acquiring capable talent, further weakening their team. I'm torn. Later

Then, tied at 9, the teams play 20 extra innings. And then, after the final game of their series, get a mild case (three day siege) of dysentary from the post game clubhouse buffet. Later

But there's always something special about your first.... (I just teed that one up for Fman) Later Wait, did a 20 year old Puerto Rican woman who was the super hot sister of my high school friend catch this ball? OK, just checking. And they're playing the theme from The Natural as he blasts it out of the park. Later

Yes, June 15th used to be the trading deadline. Trades were permitted after that date if the players were passed through waivers first. Later
  18. Fernando really mashed a walkoff grand slam tonight. And Josh Thole had two doubles and a homer. Later
  19. Edgy DC wrote: A 10-1 drubbing? Shut out for six innings by former temmate Nelson Figueroa? Seven losses in a row? Sounds like somebody misses Jesus Feliciano. As I listen to the broadcasts of their games, it seems like the present lineup is a strikeout waiting to happen. Feliciano was the only real "put the ball in play" kind of hitter they had. Fernando Martinez has rejoined the team after DL rehab, and has been hitting well since his return. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=494686 Later

    GMJ GONE

The way I read this, the Angels are paying most of the money directly to GMJ. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/01/mets-to-acquire-gary-matthews-jr.html Doesn't sound like the major portion of the money is passing through the Mets' books on the way to him. If so, any other team that signs him would also only pay him what they sign him for or the remainder of his contract with the Mets. Later
