  3. Seems like 3B for the Mets has had this rep of being more of a blackhole than any other position. I mean the 25th anniversary video had a song and video montage spotlighting it and its a perennial filler sidebar in the Mets media guide Well looking at Ultimate Mets Database the totals as of July 2006: C 71 players 1B 126 players 2B 113 players 3B 133 players SS 100 players LF 200 players CF 140 players RF 171 players DH 29 players Clearly 1st could be considered as much of a black hole as 3rd. Naturally the leader in games played, Ed Kranepool played for 18 years, hence he has a 450 game lead over Keith Hernandez. 2B the leader Wally Backman played in 680 games, I use that because the top two 3Bmen have over 700 games played, Howard Johnson (835) and Wayne Garrett (709) I'm not even going to get into the Outfield, but I'm curious as to how 3rd got to be so infamous that the Met PR department had to make a big deal about it when it doesn't seem as abnormal as the other positions.
  4. Yeah, bad typo, D Wright at third, I'm going to keep that up for the laughs of it!

Especially considering he is in the 5 hole

  7. Man what is with me today and CY winning World Champions with Mid-American AL teams of the 1980's? Also forgot Frank Viola is a member of the Twins HOF, interestingly enough he went in last year, same year Sabes was inducted into the Royals Hall
  8. I also missed Whitey Herzog and Bret Saberhagen in the Royals Hall, as well as Jim Fregosi in the Angels
  9. I see no evidence of a Giants HOF, only Giants Retired Numbers which is a different story all together
  10. Seaver in the Reds Hall of Fame has me pulling out a research thing I did last winter for every other known MLB's HOF, feel free to add on, especially all the stuff listed in the Brogna and Where Have You Gone threads This was accurate as of the end of the 2005 season Angels: Nolan Ryan Bluejays: (Level of Excellence, in lieu of retired numbers) Tony Fernandez Braves: Warren Spahn Orioles: Gene Woodling, George Bamberger, Dave Johnson, Frank Cashen, Eddie Murray Phillies: Richie Ashburn, Larry Bowa, Tug McGraw Rangers: Nolan Ryan Reds: Roy McMillan, George Foster Royals: Amos Otis Yankees: (Monument Park) Casey Stengel
  11. This fellow is getting inducteed into the Reds Hall of Fame in Cincy today No sign of him in Reds.com's preview, hopefully I can get a link later tonight. Going in with Lee May and Tom Browning

  13. From an 86 TBTC game, probably the 15th Anniversary year
  14. Will Wagner have to give up 13 if he makes it to the big club I wonder?

  16. Seems appropriate to post a great baseball song by a great artist who left this world much too soon. Steve Goodman, who's most famous song is City Of New Orleans which became a hit for both Arlo Guthrie and Willie Nelson. This is his tribute to his beloved Cubbies: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/poetry/po_cubs.shtml A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request By the shore's of old Lake Michigan Where the "hawk wind" blows so cold An old Cub fan lay dying In his midnight hour that tolled Round his bed, his friends had all gathered They knew his time was short And on his head they put this bright blue cap From his all-time favorite sport He told them, "Its late and its getting dark in here" And I know its time to go But before I leave the line-up Boys, there's just one thing I'd like to know Do they still play the blues in Chicago When baseball season rolls around When the snow melts away, Do the Cubbies still play In their ivy-covered burial ground When I was a boy they were my pride and joy But now they only bring fatigue To the home of the brave The land of the free And the doormat of the National League Told his friends "You know the law of averages says: Anything will happen that can" That's what it says "But the last time the Cubs won a National League pennant Was the year we dropped the bomb on Japan" The Cubs made me a criminal Sent me down a wayward path They stole my youth from me (that's the truth) I'd forsake my teachers To go sit in the bleachers In flagrant truancy and then one thing led to another and soon I'd discovered alcohol, gambling, dope football, hockey, lacrosse, tennis But what do you expect, When you raise up a young boy's hopes And then just crush 'em like so many paper beer cups. Year after year after year after year, after year, after year, after year, after year 'Til those hopes are just so much popcorn for the pigeons beneath the 'L' tracks to eat He said, "You know I'll never see Wrigley Field, anymore before my eternal rest So if you have your pencils and your score cards ready, and I'll read you my last request He said, "Give me a double header funeral in Wrigley Field On some sunny weekend day (no lights) Have the organ play the "National Anthem" and then a little 'na, na, na, na, hey hey, hey, Goodbye' Make six bullpen pitchers, carry my coffin and six ground keepers clear my path Have the umpires bark me out at every base In all their holy wrath Its a beautiful day for a funeral, Hey Ernie lets play two! Somebody go get Jack Brickhouse to come back, and conduct just one more interview Have the Cubbies run right out into the middle of the field, Have Keith Moreland drop a routine fly Give everybody two bags of peanuts and a frosty malt And I'll be ready to die Build a big fire on home plate out of your Louisville Sluggers baseball bats, And toss my coffin in Let my ashes blow in a beautiful snow From the prevailing 30 mile an hour southwest wind When my last remains go flying over the left-field wall Will bid the bleacher bums adeu And I will come to my final resting place, out on Waveland Avenue The dying man's friends told him to cut it out They said stop it that's an awful shame He whispered, "Don't Cry, we'll meet by and by near the Heavenly Hall of Fame He said, "I've got season's tickets to watch the Angels now, So its just what I'm going to do He said, "but you the living, you're stuck here with the Cubs, So its me that feels sorry for you!" And he said, "Ahh Play, play that lonesome losers tune, That's the one I like the best" And he closed his eyes, and slipped away What we got is the Dying Cub Fan's Last Request And here it is Do they still play the blues in Chicago When baseball season rolls around When the snow melts away, Do the Cubbies still play In their ivy-covered burial ground When I was a boy they were my pride and joy But now they only bring fatigue To the home of the brave The land of the free And the doormat of the National League
  17. And why in the world did I think it was Met PR guy during those years, Dan O'Reilly? I think Mr. Met actually is in the video mentioned, possible I'm getting my names confused.
  18. ="MFS62"]="Yancy Street Gang"]Did Mr. Met ever go away? I don't think he did. He did for a while. The original Mr.Met was named Dave Zimmerman. I used to work with him. He actually made his own costume and paid his way into games. When he asked the team for some compensation, the Mets turned him down, so he quit. It took a while for them to find a replacement. Later Huh? Then how did he get on the field and in official team related functions? Both of these can be seen in the 1966 Yearbook
  19. Yancy Street Gang wrote: Did Mr. Met ever go away? I don't think he did. I don't remember him at all when I was at Shea regularly from 85-94/95ish I do remeber they had a big thing when he was "re-introduced" in current form (as a Live Disney World Mickey Mouse character mascot) Possible he only existed in product form (stationary, novelties sold at Shea, ect) for a while? Or just in PR situations?

Do you have any independent thoughts? Just gleamed it for the thread title Speaking of mascots, anyone know exactly when the original Mr. Met was mothballed? I would find it stupidly funny though if Mettel was considered Mr. Met's "permanent replacement" Figures, they'd save money by having an animal running around the field rather than a team promotions department staffer (back then Dan O'Reilly, no clue who has been the main Mr. Met performer since Mr. Met's return, probably a string of promotion department interns or whoever shows up to work that day)

I looked in my 1979 yearbook a while back for a picture of Mettle but couldn't find one anywhere. I wanted to give him an entry in the UMDB. For some reason I think I remeber seeing footage of him in the "An Amazin' Era" video, maybe someone can do a screen cap
  22. Anyone knows how long Met-el The Mule was used and whatever happened to that "dopey" mascot we used to have roaming around Shea? Why was he brought in? An answer to the A's Charley O' The Mule?
