  1. Bullpen maneuverings have Bazooka Joe blowing bubbles in New Orleans. Jon Adkins reportedly arriving, though with Pelfrey due for one of the D/N doubleheader games (presumably the loss), don't know if he'll see action.
  2. From John Delcos of the Journal News in his LoHud Blog: ]The Mets hit the skids after the Subway Series. Roberto Alomar and Mo Vaughn were among their horrible decisions. Tom Glavine, however, was the lead domino. Pedro Martinez came later. But it was the Mets ability to land tonights pitcher never mind the monetary motives that signaled the franchise was serious about winning. Glavine left a winning tradition to come to New York, and when a player of his stature makes such a move it told others to consider the Mets. Having Glavine made it easier to later get Martinez, Carlos Beltran and Billy Wagner. Having Glavine has made everything easier. I've never heard of such an interpretation of Glavine's signing and I don't buy it at all. I always took the wooing of Glavine as a misguided impulse on ownership's part, considering where the club was after 2002. Glavine would have been a great pitcher for a team one starter away from a title. The Mets, entering 2003, were not that club. I don't believe his accepting big-time monetary compensation to come here instead of Philadelphia (another nonwinning tradition he would have lowered himself to partake in had the bucks been there) had a thing to do with the later moves under a different regime. Glavine eventually worked out because the team was torn apart and put back together by somebody else in a different era. By then, Tom was a holdover, not the first domino. It's to his credit he persevered and has produced since the second half of 2005, but he was never the harbinger of anything except gettin' paid. Among the beat writers, Delcos seems to understand how to best utilize his blog, but this assertion makes zero sense to me. I also read "Having Glavine has made everything easier" as Delcos prefers talking to him as opposed to other Mets.

  4. The PA played "Don't Worry Be Happy" while Schoeneweis was warming up. Perfect.
  5. Those of us who watch our team with a jeweler's eye are often surprised to find those who don't -- but who are ballyhooed as experts -- evaluating our team and missing or skewing what seem like obvious points. I think this is mostly a symptom of the Olneys and Phillipses and and so on needing to be "on" all the time, never being able to say "I haven't seen all that much of the Mets, except for this piece of video the producer told me to comment on, but I better protect my image as all-knowing and sound authoritative." It's an insidious practice. Though not as insidious as the top of the sixth currently in progress.

  8. At the bus stop the next morning, fifth grade, somebody's father asked if any of us had seen last night's Mets game. I volunteered that I had and wow, it was great. He was all "what are you doing staying up that late?" I'm thinking then as I'm thinking now, don't ask the first question if you're going to come back with the second question. Though I know the date of all three 9/20/73 events you mention by heart, this is the first time I've ever realized that Croce went down the same night Dave Augustine's fly ball bounced up. Time in a bottle, indeed. As for Ron Hodges sharing sports immortality with Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, a friend and I discussed whether there were any other instances of a major Met moment coinciding with another legendary same-date sporting event. The only one we could come up with was the U.S. Women's Soccer team (Brandi Chastain showing great enthusiasm) winning the World Cup on July 10, 1999, same day that Matt Franco did in Mariano Rivera. Having been at Shea and completely wrapped up in Mets 9 Yankees 8, I was legitimately surprised the soccer thing was a big deal. This was 1999. Nothing else existed next to the Mets. Re: KTE subject matter -- Let us not forget it was the Pirates who swept the Mets last September and delayed their clinching three days. Their sentence for this heinous crime has been commuted, however, seeing as how this allowed a Shea celebration on September 18.
  9. Edgy DC wrote: Forgive Dillon because he was playing a doofus, and Heaven Help Us was awesome. Agreed. Took me two years of "Entourage" to stop thinking of him as Rooney, who gave the best imaginable definition for The Holy Trinity, a topic for which he did not do his homework. "The Holy Trinity...is a total mystery that cannot be understood." "Heaven Help Us" was such a great movie that it made Andrew McCarthy appear as if he could act.

Given the Yankees support by Turtle and "E", seeing some Mets love on "Entourage" by Johnny Drama, especially after such a great win, calls for us to cry "VICTORY!!!" It is incumbent on every Mets fan to root for Kevin Dillon to cash in his Emmy nomination for best supporting actor in a comed series. I can also now forgive him for worrying that he flipped away his Mickey Mantle card in "Heaven Help Us".

  13. Gwreck wrote: It's already retired in Pittsburgh. Greg, who exactly did you have in mind for the Mets to retire? Keith mostly. Now that David Newhan has gone down bayou way, I'm hoping 17 can be shaken free from the clutches of mediocrity. Paul Waner, 55 years. What the heck were they waiting for? I saw Lloyd Waner take a swing at age 70 in an Old Timers game at Shea in 1976. Seventy was a lot more doddering back then (or I was 31 years younger).

  21. Make it two. 753 just now off Ohman. Cubs announcers couldn't sound less thrilled.

  23. As if there's anything else worth rapping about.
  24. The Mets were reasonably active in promoting this Blue Jay hybrid/Cyclone placeholder, sending Bobby Valentine and Benny Agbayani to St. John's to conduct clinics, for example. They also fixed up the school's baseball field to make it somewhat professional. I never attended a game but I did see fit to order a t-shirt, immortalized here in commemoration of a night when the other Queens team became kings: http://faithandfear.blogharbor.com/blog/Photos/_archives/2006/9/18/2339160.html Like Lakers' and Vikings' and Rockies' uniforms, the purple photographs as blue.
