When I saw the topic header I envisioned, all delicate sympathies to Chris Snyder, something far worse. ]Mets Activated Bobby Bonilla from the 2,000-Day Disabled List.

The wonder of it all is you don't hear that Foxwoods jingle on Metscasts anymore. Haven't missed it one bit. But I do like Pizzarelli and his version of TMOTTBG.

Per your original question, on Cleon's bust, I get the feeling somebody sent the sculptor the wrong picture. It would be a very Met thing to do. As for who goes in next, it's obvious: nobody. The Mets' next move, in fact, is to start excommunicating its Hall of Famers so their Hall will be empty. They probably regret starting one in the first place. Ignoring it hasn't been enough for them. Maybe they'll have a nice ceremony where the busts will be melted into one big Jackie Robinson statue.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: I think a "Reyes Attitude Watch" would be a nice thing to wear on days when the "Omar Minaya Watch" clashes with your outfit. It was once said, when Mickey Mouse watches were popular, that Mickey Mouse wore a Spiro Agnew watch. Then a smart entrepreneur went out and made Spiro Agnew watches.

Mets.com has TA in 44, famously traded for NYM 45 Pedro Martinez long ago and first pitcher to wear Bob Myrick's old digits since Izzy in 1999 (so says the source). The last start taken by an NYM 44 was in fact Isringhausen's in St. Louis nine years ago, a steamy Saturday (both here and there) when Iz' needed to be bailed out early and took the loss, future NYM 36 Manny Aybar holding on for the win after future NYM 27 Darren Oliver couldn't go five. From there on out, Bobby V would generally use Izzy in innocuous situations as it was believed or understood or declared that he couldn't handle the pressure. Wasn't sad to see him go to Oakland...for Billy Taylor? And of course who's your longtime Cardinal closer now? (Injury notwithstanding.) Bonus noodnik fact: The last time a pitcher wore 44 at Shea for the Mets in game action, he did so as an emissary of the Mercury Mets, July 27, 1999. The pitcher? Jason Isringsofsaturn.

That afternoon early in 2002 when Rey Ordoez played inexplicably awful defense and threw his glove into the stands was, in retrospect, when Rey-Rey jumped the shark altogether. I got an eerie flashback to that when I saw what Rey-Reyes did Sunday.

From the Andy Phillips thread: ]We're taking him for his knowledge of the MFY playbook and will abandon him Monday after using him for all he was worth...goodness we are evil when our hand is forced. Sometimes you go for snark and you come up with accuracy! Phillips was DFA'd after Monday's game to make room for Armas. Muniz lives.

Mets 9-6 in Interleague play this year. Must be that American League lineup we've heard so much about.

Bill Brasky has the biggest farm in Bumbleass, PA. He took first prize in the goat-growing contest for growing the biggest goat the Bumbleass County Fair.

="AG/DC"]The funny thing is that Manuel is either the first or the second interim manager the Mets ever had that took over a team still in contention. (You can debate Roy McMillan.) Are we counting Buddy Harrelson as interim? I vaguely recall he was given a fairly permanent key to the managerial washroom in 1990 but he was a midseason replacement and it was still plenty early to realistically contend. Nothing wrong with Jerry and his pronouncements. The media has gotten a lot dumber, a lot more willfully dumb, since the days of Professor McMillan. ]I heard that Manuel said that New Yorkers look like they've lost some weight. What the Hell did he mean by that!? THINLY VEILED INSULT Manuel 'lost weight' crack a heavy blow to Mets fans

8-7 at MFYS II since 2004. We were just getting the hang of that dump, too!

IGT 06/29/08 -- New York Yankees @ New York Mets
G-Fafif replied to bmfc1's topic in Archived Game Threads
I hereby dedicate the final win by the Mets over the MFYs in the history of Shea Stadium to Mets Guy in Michigan who was in my thoughts when Billy closed the deal. Through the good graces of Met Fairy, I was at the game with a fairly magical group: my wife getting her first SS game; my friend Richie who was with me for Matt Franco; and my friend Rob who had an MGIM problem dating back to 1998 where Mets-MFYs games were concerned. He and I saw them lose the first one (Rojas v. O'Neill), saw them lose at MFYS II in 2000 (13-5), he saw them lose yesterday and there were probably some others in between. It was good to watch the monkey crumble off his back. For Rob, for Dave (MGIM), for all of us. Good job Metsies. -

Since BP is optional today, don't know if the game notes will be going up in a timely fashion, thus won't wait to note here that Countdown Like It Oughta Be's 41 (despite it being 41 and thus eliciting obvious associations) is to be revealed, in the spirit of crosstown harmony, by Yogi Berra. Nobody has been more celebrated or beloved by both fan bases than this man, who not played for but coached and managed both teams in a career highlighted by his piloting of the 1973 Mets to their improbable National League pennant. In our planning, Yogi was/is accompanied by 2006 N.L. East champion manager Willie Randolph, also in a little hands-across-the-Triborough action. Hard to believe Yogi is a better bet to show up at Shea today than Willie. Relive the homestand in all its test here. -
From the folks who brought you the ultrapopular non-New York opponent Interleague Shea retrospective, here's the local flavor. Eleven years of trauma, some of it less traumatic than the rest. I'll leave out the pre-Subway Series Mayor's Trophy and such for lack of solid research, but I'll leave in everything else that was standout good and completely forget all that sucked. In a class by itself: The Matt Franco Game, 7/10/99 --Mets 9 Yankees 8...that was the chant I threw at anybody who mentioned rings right after. In a class by itself because, sadly, it was the only one of its kind that month: Shea's last home World Series win, 10/24/00 --With the stars Rick Reed, Robin Ventura, Benny Agbayani, John Franco and Armando Benitez. Yes, there could be another World Series at Shea and maybe even a Mets win...but I don't really believe that. And all the rest, in no particular order: Most wonderfully Kooky, 5/21/05 --Dae-Sung Koo doubles off of Randy Johnson, makes it home on a sac bunt to first. You are with us, Mr. Koo. Bonus track is Kris Benson's very solid outing, remembered here because Anna bylined a piece in the Post the next day about how her man was getting a special treat as a result of his pitching. Oh Anna, we completely knew ye. Rocket burns up the first time, 7/9/99 --Piazza owned him from the get-go, recalled here with utter fondness. Estes and the Assmiss, 6/15/02 --Shawn homering off Roger should have been triumphant. Somehow, of course, it wasn't. Eff Unit, 5/19/06 --The most-oft used bit of footage in the history of SNY is David Wright hopping, skipping and jumping after belting Mariano Rivera. I was doing the same earlier when Carlos Beltran lashed out at Randy Johnson. Rescue Me, 5/21/06 --One day after the most famous Billy Wagner meltdown of them all, Wright and Delgado homer lengthily and Mets take the series, leaving all of us relieved...and bitter that we didn't sweep. Blown Away It's Not Blown, 5/19/07 --In which the Mets build a big lead and the MFYs chisel away at it, but not nearly enough, though who could tell for sure? My friend and I literally held onto each other when the last out was made, as if to say, no, they can't take this win away from us. Son of Kurt Russell's Nephew, 7/3/04 --What could be better than Mets 9 Yankees 8? Nothing, actually, but Mets 10 Yankees 9, also won in the ninth, came pretty close. We All Need a Broom of Our Own, 7/4/04 --Mets sweep Yankees. Need more info? The Midnight Ride of Mike Piazza, 6/17/01 --Mets rally from six down in a game several Mets fans I know went to sleep on because we were so far back and it was so darn late. The decisive smack was delivered by our catcher off Carlos Almanzar, but he wouldn't have come up had not Tsuyoshi Shinjo sacrificed his quad in beating out a potential double play ball at first. And it wouldn't register in the memory banks if not for Armando managing to keep Bernie Williams' massive home run to right just foul. Don't Say Mo Vaughn Never Did Anything For You, 6/16/02 --He just fucking blasted David Wells to secure the series win, which was nice of him...y'know? Yes, We Won, 6/28/98 --The first-ever Mets win in this painful ongoing drama came when some combination of Carlos Baerga, Brian McRae and Luis Lopez executed a sac fly that almost wasn't. For a moment, ESPN credited the Mets with the winning run, then took it off, then acted confused, then went to SportsCenter. To this day, the final score as it appeared on the broadcast was a tie. But I'm pretty sure we prevailed. Ollie's Big Moment, 6/29/08 --What a way to finish up the Shea chapter of this rivalry! (One can always hope.)

TBA is at it again. As for the Countdown Like It Oughta Be, number 42 is being handled by someone who knows how to handle his business in a Subway Series atmosphere, the author of the Matt Franco game...Matt Franco. The dramatics were never as intense as they were on the afternoon of July 10, 1999. In a back-and-forth affair that featured six home runs by the visiting team and one massive shot to the picnic tent roof by Mets catcher Mike Piazza, it was our special guest who will be taking down number 42 who brought down the house. It was his two-out single in the bottom of the ninth off the opposition's closer that plated the tying and winning runs to give that particular battle of New York to the Mets by a score of 9 to 8. -

For the record, Mr. Met was called to duty before the lesser half of the doubleheader. Thus, in every way that counted, figuratively and literally, the Mets were unprepared Friday night. -

Tucker Ashford's middle name is Steven, so when the Mets list TBA as their number-puller, it probably means they forgot to find somebody. For Oughta Be's 43, we don't salute Shea, not exactly: Ladies and gentlemen and guests who are joining us here tonight for the first time in 2008, this is the juncture in the game when we pause to pay homage to the people and events that have defined Shea Stadium across its 45 fun-filled seasons. But it turns out another nearby baseball stadium is also commemorating a final year, and we'd like to give it our own special tribute. Since that structure opened in 1976, it has hosted many memorable ballgames and provided the stage for many a superstar. When we think of that place, we are moved to recall one evening in particular. The night was as historic as any in the annals of New York baseball and we have with us the pitcher who made it so. His lifetime record as a Met at Shea Stadium was 14-13. But as a Met at the other place, he threw nine scoreless innings and collected a 6-0 shutout in the first-ever regular season Interleague game in the city of New York. Please welcome back to remove number 43, the author of that June 16, 1997 masterpiece, Dave Mlicki. -
Whenever I think of Mussina, I think of an interview Fox ran with him during the first Subway Series he was a part of. The game was at Shea and he was in his road uniform and he referred to the honor of wearing the pinstripes or the steel gray that said New York on it and McCarver swooned that Mussina had the presence of mind, Stanford man that he is, to have differentiated between the home and away unis in his chat. Also, whenever I think of Mussina, I think he's a total douchebag jerkoff who can go fuck himself up the Bumbleass. This is the same guy who bitched and moaned that the Blue Jays' honoring their longtime announcer delayed his start at SkyDome and that it threw him off even though he was pitching fine that day until like the sixth. What a fuckhead, honestly. I fucking hate him and he's probably not even in my top ten I-fucking-hates when it comes to the MFYs. Well, maybe he is by now. C'mon Mets, don't fuck up today, tomorrow or the next day. Fuck up all you want the rest of the season, but honestly, you have a fucking job to do and it's to shut these motherfuckers up or, even better, get them whining about how they had to sit around Pittsburgh for a couple of hours. A-holes. Fucking a-holes. (I haven't had much sleep lately.)
