  1. Your imaginary sister is lucky to have such a gentleman for an imaginary brother.
  2. I am bloodlustily fed up with Pelfrey.
  3. Greg Harts in for Brian Ostrosser, 1973. Jeff Gardner backing up Tony Castillo, 1991. Mike Fyhrie, pitching to Charlie Green, 1996.
  4. Charlie Greene is one of the '96s. Manny Hernandez is one of the '89s. Joe Nolan is one of the '72. Since I don't remember him pitching last year, I'll say Willie Collazo is one of the '07s, albeit with multiple spellings. Oh, and Brian Ostrosser is from '73.
  5. Tito Navarro 9/6/93. Kenny Greer 9/27/93. Carlos Mendoza 9/3/97. C.J. Nitkowski 9/3/01.
  6. Vladimir Guerrero, certainly more now than when he was an intradivision rival, but even then some. Chone Figgins, from a distance. Rod Carew, too. Aaron and Clemente held in awe that transcended uniform when I was a kid. Dale Murphy on that level later. Jeff Bagwell a little, or at least I didn't dislike him. Ditto for Tim Raines. Albert Pujols before October 2006. Chris Gomez, journeyman utility guy, when he was just starting out, because he answered a doubting and clueless Tigers fan (obvious he didn't know his own roster) at SkyDome with a base hit. Adored Vida Blue during his breakout season of 1971. And yes, Steve Garvey makes the cut despite his being Steve Garvey. Loved how he anchored a horrible defensive infield. Loved how he made the transition from third to first. Loved that he won the MVP when so many wanted to hand it to Brock. Love Roger Kahn's description of him in A Season in the Sun. Love that he beat the Cubs in the NLCS as a Padre. Love the comparison between the American flag and a taco in explaining the difference between the two uniforms he wore. Loved that he idolized Gil Hodges. Love that his dad drove a bus in Vero Beach for the home team. Love that he wore a Brooklyn Dodgers t-shirt under his jersey the day the Dodgers clinched against the Expos (something I didn't know 'til seeing it on MLBN recently, but still.)
  7. For entertainment purposes only and not as a cheat sheet, two pieces touching on this subject here and here. A few paragraphs into the latter will answer the thread's original question.
  8. Two straight losses? Gil must go!
  9. Howard: You're inaccurate. You're wrong. You're a liar. Author: No I'm not. Duquette: I should backtrack in case the Mets aren't broke and are hiring. Fox Business Channel is indeed a CNBC competitor. Not on a lot of cable systems. You can see their logo on the Citi Field ribbons now and again in the course of a game when you're not watching the Mets who will not be sold, so you better be nice to Jeff Wilpon's kid.
  10. Angel Pagan's expression is pure 1977. Or, come to think of it, 2009.
  11. That's a Cubs KTE that feels five months in the making. Certainly worth the wait.
  12. From Marty Noble: ]Koosman provided a new story, too, confessing he, seated in the dugout, had rubbed the baseball on his shoe at Hodges' direction in Game 5 of the World Series. Jones was deemed to be a hit batsman as a result. Whatever it takes! The statute of limitations evidently expires once the guilty team has participated in three additional World Series. "Koozie's the only guy who ever saw it," Swoboda said later. "Maybe that's Koozie's urban myth."
  13. It can give a nice shine to your wing tips. Well, that is the truth about shoe polish.
  14. On visiting the grave site of George Sisler, whose single-season hits record he broke: ]"I wanted to do that for a grand upperclassman of the baseball world."
  15. Preserved a Glavine gem on Ralph Kiner Night. I didn't like Glavine, I wasn't crazy about Wagner, but I sure do love Ralph Kiner. Billy and Paulie embracing upon clinching of the Mets' first division title in 18 years, as if they were the ones who waited 18 years. Ryan Zimmerman preventing a 9-0 start in '06, though a) you can't prove it would have happened and 8-1 was pretty good.
  16. It might be more efficient to start a thread cataloguing which losses aren't the worst of 2009. Tidier anyway.
  17. From Brandon Moore, no-hit whiz of Coney Island: ]"I love playing in Brooklyn. They say it's the closest you can get to playing in the big leagues without playing in the big leagues." And I thought that's what they said about the Mets.
  18. ="Nymr83":1ir3j8vb]you get alot of that, at weekend day games especially. i've found the people sitting around me to be much smarter on freezing cold or rainy weeknights in April. i guess theres something about the early start and the heat that attracts the morons who would never show up to watch a game in the cold after work on a thursday[/quote:1ir3j8vb] Of course when the morons who would never show up to watch a game in the cold after work on a Thursday are warm in their homes, they may divine a sense of intellectual superiority over those of us shivering at the ballpark despite our working knowledge of rosters and rules. bmfc1 Aug 23 2009 05:16 PM Here's something else for this bizarre baseball day: a Mets minor leaguer threw a no-hitter! http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2009_08_23_broasx_abeasx_1 G-Fafif Aug 23 2009 05:36 PM From Brandon Moore, no-hit whiz of Coney Island: ]"I love playing in Brooklyn. 19. ="Nymr83"]]and that Wagner, warming up in the bullpen wears No. 34 (Wagner wears 13; Mike Pelfrey wears 34; the pitcher warming up was No. 64, Elmer Dessens). CBS gamecast actually had Wagner warming up at some point in the 8th, whether that was a mistake or not i dont know Wagner did warm up, but it was after the dissertation from the scholars in the row behind me.
  20. I thought it was pretty incredible that I went to a game and saw two three-run homers in the top of the first, a starter pulled with a 3-0 count to the opposing pitcher after 45 pitches, a leadoff inside-the-park homer in the bottom of the first, a triple follow that, a poor-hitting pitcher drive in a run, the inside-the-park homer-hitter hit a homer outside the park and the return of an icon to face his old club. Also, Pat Misch in the middle innings giving up nothing was pretty special. Apparently, prior to the ninth, I hadn't seen nothing yet. In related news, I learned from those sitting around me that the Beach Boys of Mike Love were a lock to sing the National Anthem (they didn't); that Carlos Delgado has an option for next year (he doesn't); that Billy Wagner couldn't be used because once you're claimed on waivers you're ineligible (no such rule exists); and that Wagner, warming up in the bullpen wears No. 34 (Wagner wears 13; Mike Pelfrey wears 34; the pitcher warming up was No. 64, Elmer Dessens).
  21. ="A Boy Named Seo"]If gfafif was in black jersey and blue cap, I think I might've spied him during the ceremony. That wasn't me, but I did wear a Mets tie Saturday. Great, great, great piece on Saturday night by my favorite (FAFIF company excluded) daily blogger here.
  22. Welcome back Billy must go.
