  1. With Jay Payton retired, that leaves Melvin Mora, who endured a car accident this spring, as the last of the 2000 Mets still standing. What hurts most these days for the 39-year-old third baseman is his unproductive spring at the plate, where he was batting .167 after his first 10 games. "He's an old man, what do you expect?" Diamondbacks catcher Henry Blanco joked. "I might be old," Mora told Blanco before Sunday's game against the Oakland A's at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, "but you're older." Melvin Mora = Old Man. What does that make the rest of us? Bruce Chen and Mora are the last 2001 Mets going. Mora may be the only 1999 Met on an Opening Day roster pending the status of Jason Isringhausen; Octavio Dotel is slated for the Blue Jays DL.
  2. Unloved former Mets closer Braden Looper hangs 'em up.
  3. Edgy DC wrote: I think honesty and circumspection can go hand in hand. I mean, if you want Hu because he's more or less as good as the next guy and your marketing folks tell you he'll get you 75% more Chinese-American fans and 45% Asian-American fans overall, sure. I guess. (I think he looks to be the better bet anyhow.) But I sure don't look forward to the backlash when he goes 0-4 with an error and folks complain that he's only on the team because he's Asian. Alderson on Hu: People have latched on to his name in the "whos on first?" and all of those kinds of things. So hes developed a little bit of a following and become part of the entertainment value of what the team represents. Now thats not going to determine whether he makes the team or someone else does, but its a factor, I guess, of some small magnitude. Nothing about ethnicity there. I watched one of the games Hu played in the last week and was struck by the very enthusiastic "Huuuuu" chant, presumably from whatever cross-section of Mets fans attended that game.
  4. 4th Place, 75-87 is as low as I'm willing to go even with various misgivings. 3rd Place, 85-77 is as high as I can see despite craning my neck as far as I can. So let's say a straight-up 81-81 break-even third-place finish with the hope that I was laughably pessimistic back on March 25.
  5. It's always weird to read the Mets explained to people who don't care that much about the Mets by someone who doesn't care that much about the Mets.
  6. Applause for Sandy's honesty. And if "Hard Knocks" gets us to the conference championship, so to speak, bring on the goddamn snacks.
  7. Benjamin Grimm wrote: My take is that he can hit, but that he's not expected to have a lot of power. I'm thinking he's more of a Tim Teufel than a Dan Uggla. Don't be Don Bosch is all I ask.
  8. Sergio Ferrer just singled.
  9. Thole: Also a deep thinker. Cardinals announcers described that as leaving Port St. Lucie. Probably because it got bored playing against the Cardinals, National, Marlins and Braves.
  10. Thole: Also a deep thinker.
  11. That's given to the organization's best baserunner (per Jason Fry's fine piece recalling Cole in this year's Maple Street Press Mets Annual, which includes contributions from a couple of your CPF brethren; buy your copy today).
  12. Pagan just went Kapow!
  13. Nick Evans just challenged Lance Berkman's sore arm and made it to third. Something about him screams "Eff Lance Berkman and his sore arm."
  14. I see Galante's second career as a scout for the Danny Meyer organization didn't work out.
  15. They still give it out, to the top rookie in Mets camp every spring, but you don't hear much about it. So hear something about it here.
  16. I remember one thing about Matt Galante. In one of the postseasons when he was here, desperate for Mets content of any kind, I saw on mets.com that there was a bylined piece by said coach about his favorite places for Italian food in the National League. I anxiously and ironically clicked on it, wondering what the gag was, but it was actually "my favorite Italian restaurants," very earnestly recommeneded, in Houston, L.A., wherever. It didn't sate my craving for Mets news whatsoever.
  17. Oh yeah, Valentin...how soon he's forgettable. I may have the year wrong on Rojas and Cuba (I just looked it up; it was 1999).
  18. Did Cookie Rojas coach in 4 his last year, 2002? Would have been the same year he and Rey-Rey protested by not showing up the night the Cuban team played the Orioles. Feel free to manufacture your own "Ordonez not showing up?" observation.
  19. Lenny Dykstra and Ron Swoboda wore 4 to alumni events.
  20. The installation will wow everybody at first, but then it will have to be taken out of circulation for repair. We'll get frequent updates on its rehabilitation, I'm sure.
  21. Wilson Valdez slipped into 4 briefly (I think).
  22. You did say infielders, because my next thought runs to Ben Johnson, and he was, if anything, an outfielder who wore No. 4.
