  4. Maybe the first time I've heard a player, during a game, say "come out of the womb" -- R.A. in response to new kid born. Speaking of which, OH BABY, WILLIE HARRIS!

Yeah, I feel like I'm getting more information than if I was actually watching it on TV. If you were watching on TV, you'd be watching KB interview R.A. Dickey while the actual game is in progress.

  11. Per the Man from A.D.A.M.: Collins spoke with Josh Thole and Mike Pelfrey after Pelfrey openly questioned pitch selection following the start. The manager's message to Thole was to keep those things in-house. "I wanted to make sure the discussions were with Mike and not you guys," Collins told reporters. Collins added that he does not worry about pitch selection. "I get caught up in location," he said.

METS ZERO IN ON CLUB MARK Now 0-5 after dropping yet another one to Braves BY ADAM RUBIN DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Sunday, April 10, 2005 ATLANTA - The New Mets will be introduced at Shea tomorrow, one-by-one jogging from the dugout to the first-base line. And what promised a week ago to be a glorious homecoming filled with cheer after an extreme winter makeover now may turn ugly, after fans' renewed emotional investment in the downtrodden club has been rewarded with more misery. Aaron Heilman took the mound for the Mets last night trying to stop the bleeding. The Mets might as well have sent out the front-office executive who allowed the franchise to use its 2001 first-round pick to select him. Heilman, subbing for the injured Kris Benson, served up a mammoth second-inning grand slam to Brian Jordan as the Braves beat the Mets, 6-3, at Turner Field. So much for Heilman's reworked mechanics, which involved returning to the three-quarters-style delivery that allowed him to go undefeated his senior year of college. The Mets dropped to 0-5, the franchise's worst start in 42 years and third-worst start all-time, closing in on No. 1 (0-9, 1962) and No. 2 (0-8, 1963). They are baseball's only winless team. They haven't led since Braden Looper blew an Opening Day save. And all that stands between them and a winless road trip is Pedro Martinez, who must best John Smoltz this afternoon to snap the skid. Oh, and Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens await the Mets when they arrive home. Heilman remains one of the biggest symbols of the Mets' nosedive since the organization's 2000 World Series appearance. He's polite, quiet and intellectual, an avid reader. He has degrees in management information systems and philosophy from Notre Dame and a crossword puzzle always nearby. He also was the best available arm to promote in the system for last night's start, which underscores how barren the Mets' highest level of the minors has become. Triple-A Norfolk's starting lineup for a doubleheader game yesterday included only one prospect, center fielder Angel Pagan. Otherwise the Tides are serving as a holding pen for other organization's castoffs. Jose Santiago, who would have made the start instead of Heilman had Mike Cameron not landed on the disabled list, was knocked out in the third inning of Norfolk's other doubleheader game after surrendering four runs and eight hits. The Mets haven't been willing to rush prospects like 20-year-old Yusmeiro Petit, who made only his third Double-A start yesterday, but they might have to rethink that philosophy for as long as Benson is sidelined with a strained pectoral muscle.

  16. The Halladay clan gathers in the stands.
  17. Several hours before Roy Halladay emerges, I'm simply in a good Mets mood. Not good enough to be all consumed by whether they'll be 4-2 or 3-3 later, but much better than recent seasons' undercurrent of "fine if they win, but if they lose, at least they might fire/release/trade somebody". The calm after the storm, perhaps.
  18. If his profile had been a little higher and his thought process a little less distracted, Lee could have turned, "Goodbye, Orange Juice...and Hello Tang!" into beaucoup endorsement dollars.
  19. When MFYs got Mazz, a young college radio host (though I imagine most college radio hosts are young) expressed horror that the almighty MFYs had stooped to obtain Lee Mazzilli, "alleged outfielder, alleged first baseman." The station was WFUV and the pompous gasbag who berated Mazzilli as unworthy of pinstripes was Michael Kay. Who I'm pretty sure kissed his ass when Mazzilli was an MFY coach/mgr in waiting nearly two decades later. What a prick.
  20. Recently was treated to a DVD of previously videotaped highlights of the 1981 season, including all kinds of weird ephemera. On it was an interview from during the strike with Mazz with one of the local sports anchors (might have been Channel 2 weekend guy Len Berman). The hook was "they were already booing you, are you afraid they're going to boo you more when you guys come back." Mazz took it in stride, sort of. Also, I forgot about his mustache from that late Torre period. He looked like Lee Mazzilli disguising himself as Lee Mazzilli with a mustache. Spring Training 1982, with Foster in left, Mookie in center, Valentine in right and Kingman at first, there was no room on the star-studded Mets for Mazzilli. But the middle-infield was unsettled, so Mazz was directed to take ground balls at second. He took a few and realized it was futile. That was a few weeks before the trade.

  22. R.A. Dickey AM Drivetime* Interview Phraseology Countdown: April 7, 2011 3. Arrest -- As in arrest a losing streak. Other would stop at stop, maybe go as far as halt. 2. Chaotic -- That's what the knuckleball is: a "chaotic" pitch. 1. Traverse -- From a story about being stuck in Triple-A and deciding to attempt to swim...no, "traverse" the Missouri River. He didn't so much make it across as survive the adventure, he said. *On WFAN, with Boomer and Carton, to whom I don't normally listen, but I heard "R.A. Dickey coming up" and I stayed tuned. I'd stay tuned through three hours of Adam the Insipid Bull for 15 minutes of R.A. Dickey.
  23. Was just doing some research on "all" and it turns you can't win 'em. At least that's what my sports psychologist says.
