  1. The runners return to Capuano.
  2. It's lovely and harmless, but he's really turned into a budding Casey Stengel in his late sixties.
  3. Tom just did an interview with Ed Coleman for Mets Extra. The subject of the second half was wine, which Tom helpfully seemed to have drunk his share of before speaking. Highlights: referred to himself as a "studmuffin" when he pitched; described how he brings everyone from the vineyard to a Giants game every year and he gets them on the field; alluded to Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson as his historical "heroes" and now he's among "the gods" at Cooperstown...which was all part of his roundabout explanation of why he makes wine. Or something. On the FAN site currently.
  4. I'm pretty certain Sammy Serval paid off a few city commissioners to get it to face downtown Flushing.
  5. Wow, Marquis hits Thole and crumples on the mound at the same time. No need to issue warnings.

  9. After Friday night's loss in Arizona, the Mets' oldest .500 start date is pushed ahead from April 29, 1968 (the 15th game of that season) to the second game of the May 12, 1968 doubleheader at Chicago, a 10-0 win over the Cubs (Selma beating Joe Niekro). From that game forward (the 28th game of 1968), the Mets are 3,460-3,460. Before that, up through the first game of that doubleheader, they were an exact .333 ballclub: 332-364, accounting for their current lifetime mark of 332 games below .500.

When he was winning ballgame and waxing eloquent last year, I found myself thinking, "Don't ever let him go on Twitter. Don't limit this beautiful man to 140 characters." Now that he's back to earth, he can go on Friendster for all I care.
  12. Starting with the game of April 29, 1968, a 6-5 win over the Reds at Crosley Field (Koosman over George Culver), the Mets are exactly .500 in regular season games. That's as far back as you can go at present and say that. Their record is 3,466-3,466. Before then the Mets are 331 games below .500.
  13. Time marches on... 112: 1985 -- Young Doctor K vs. Old Jerry K 113: 1982 -- Ellis Valentine steps on his own storyline 114: 1963 -- Roger Craig maintains his sanity, receives deliverance Also... 112: 2006 -- Padre Piazza grows increasingly less popular with each swing 113: 2005 -- What David does for an encore after his bare-hand catch 114: 1988 -- Gary Carter, no longer stuck on 299

  16. Caught a note in ESPN NY's daily Mets news roundup that today is Edgardo Alfonzo's birthday, which didn't sound right to me. His commonly listed birthday is November 8, but baseball-reference and Retrosheet have it as August 11. Of course what we refer to as 8/11 is referred to almost everywhere else as 11/8. My guess (and I sort of remember this maybe coming up here before) is Fonzie's birthday was transposed for years and, post-9/11, when everybody got nervous about proper ID, this type of thing got corrected. Still, November 8 is listed most everywhere but the aforementioned sites (which I trust more than most everybody else). Either way, 38th happy birthday sometime this year to my favorite Met position player ever.
  17. METS ALL-TIME HIT LEADERS Through 8/10/2011 1. Ed Kranepool 1,418 2. JOSE REYES 1,263 3. DAVID WRIGHT 1,209 And David ties Ed for all-time lead in total bases with 2,047. Rest of Top 10: 3. Darryl Strawberry 2,028 4. JOSE REYES 1,915 5. Mike Piazza 1,815 6. Howard Johnson 1,823 7. Edgardo Alfonzo 1,736 8. Cleon Jones 1,715 9. Mookie Wilson 1,586 10. Carlos Beltran 1,567
  18. Thole 3.5 Tejada 2.0 Evans 1.0 Baxter 1.0
  19. BAX TO THE WALL Hometown Boy Toast of Citi After Robbing Padres of HR
  20. Gil Hodges won the Sporting News Mgr. award in 1969. Gene Mauch beat out Yogi Berra in 1973, which irked me then and irks me now. Irked, I tell you.
  21. I agree with everything my partner wrote except for giving such a worthless piece of crap any attention at all.
  22. Don't know how played up this was on the broadcast, but advertised on the big screens at Citi Field Tuesday night was Wednesday and Thursday all tickets are half-priced. Details here. If you already bought a ticket for one of those two games you can apparently get a free ticket to a game before Sept. 1. They could bring down the concession prices while they're at it (20-oz. carbonated soft drink: $5.25), but good and aware deal from the Mets. No matter what the box score says about 24,000 in attendance, our Most Exciting Tremendous Super team performed its exploits in front of a knot of commuters waiting for the bus Tuesday night...and not a very large knot.
