  2. With Torre, I always come back to one of those knowing asides Francesa shared some time ago. The subject (for probably the thousandth time) was whether Joe should just walk away from Steingrabber after losing some playoff series so he could preserve his dignity. Francesa said that would never happen: "Joe likes his money." Well, who doesn't, I thought, but it left me with the impression that rearose in the past 36 hours: Joe likes his money and will do the dirty work necessary to keep it coming. Maybe not a "stick it to the Mets" guy, but probably a "you want me to do what? Sure, whatever" operator.

Several years ago, when Torre was riding MFY-high, I wanted to purchase his 1967 Topps card as it was the first card I could ever recall having. I went to a card show and asked about it, yet felt compelled to tell the dealer (who couldn't have given a fig) that this wasn't about his current MFY-ness, yada, yada. And then I walked away, refusing to be thought of as somebody who would pay for a picture of the manager of the MFYs.

Somewhere early in Torre's MFY tenure, he said something to the effect of managing the Braves and Cardinals was special because he played for them, but playing and managing for the Mets didn't really mean much to him, despite being from New York. He established himself as an All-Star in Milwaukee/Atlanta, won an MVP in St. Louis and ringed himself with the MFYs. With the Mets he was over the hill and managed in the nether regions of the N.L. East. Doing some long-distance psychoanalyzing here, but I don't think Torre's particularly sentimentally attached to his Mets tenure.

The Grant/DeRoulet Mets gave Joe his big break. The Wilpon/Doubleday Mets fired him. Not that it necessarily has anything to do with "uniformity," but I get the feeling he's never completely brushed that chip off his shoulder.

I mean I'm obviously angry about it, but I'm sure there are plenty of Mets fans who don't give a crap. Yeah, they're idiots -- but we're OK. Right. I put "idiot" in that spot for a reason; you and me, man, we're all good. Oh totally.

  9. Humble suggestion proffered to make chicken salad out of chicken spit here: In 2012, Major League Baseball will inaugurate Community Service Recognition Day, when each of our 30 teams will promote the organizations in their communities who are dedicated to helping others by having its players and coaches wear the caps of those groups on the field for one game. Major League Baseball thanks the New York Mets for setting an example we can all follow.

  12. NATIONAL LEAGUE BATTING RACE Through 9/12/2011 Braun .331 REYES .329 Braun sits on his ass, Reyes's hitting streak and batting average leadership come to an end.
  13. METS ALL-TIME HIT LEADERS Through 9/12/2011 1. Ed Kranepool 1,418 2. JOSE REYES 1,280 3. DAVID WRIGHT 1,238

  16. Nats take lead when Wright drops ball. Or did an MLB representative take it away from him?
  17. Game continues. No score, though tedium seems to be kicking excitement's ass.
  18. Every time I see that acronym in this context, I wonder who'd bully a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich.
  19. Mets and Nats, no score thus far. (The IGT looked lonely.)
  20. Adam Rubin has friends at MLB? Has he lobbied them for a hat-confiscating job? And while we're on the subject, "Joe Torre, Fucking Shitbag" may be my favorite thread title ever.
  21. Randy Johnson's delight is of utmost concern to several retired athletes and can be achieved by making the most superficial adjustments to his appearance, though his notoriously sour personality remains unaddressed.
  22. Dickey! Detwiller! Third place! And more! Jose Reyes SS Justin Turner 2B Lucas Duda RF David Wright 3B Angel Pagan CF Jason Bay LF Nick Evans 1B Mike Nickeas C R.A. Dickey - RHP
  23. A couple of "The Mets wish to thank New Era for setting aside contractual obligations so our players, coaches and managers could wear the caps of the New York City service agencies we honor on this very special night" announcements, followed by some tasteful reminder that you can buy New Era caps some other time would have been a nice back-scratching way to gracefully satisfy any parties that were so craven as to demand satisfaction.
  24. Priorities at work, according to Buster Olney tweet: Said one team exec: "What happens if there's an earthquake, and many killed? And then a Katrina-like hurricane in an MLB city?" Unspeakable tragedy, I suppose. And then maybe some idiot team will want to wear some kind of non-regulation cap.
