  1. If you caught MLBN's 30 For 30 on the Mets, the highlight was clearly R.A.'s lighthearted tour of the St. Lucie clubhouse, including leading the cameras to Mike Pelfrey in the Jacuzzi (no closeups, I'm delighted to say). He came off as more of a fun teammate than I would have guessed when I first became mesmerized by his postgame interviews in 2010. Maybe job security makes you loosen up. I enjoyed JCL's STFU R.A. campaign, which surprised me given that I was so in love with him when 2011 started. Everybody's a more intriguing personality when pitching/playing well.
  2. When I think of Tobi Stoner, I inevitably think of Toby Beau. [youtube:1aneas18]fNa05r-ntyA[/youtube:1aneas18] And when I think of Toby Beau, I inevitably think of Walter Egan. [youtube:1aneas18]2F__m3piXfk[/youtube:1aneas18] Both were hits in August of 1978, and I can't help but think Tobi Stoner would have given up a few hits back then, too, if he were mopping up behind Dale Murray.

  4. "Tales" is now available on Amazon, et al.
  5. He was no Dennis Bennett.
  6. Mets Pop Culture Sightings 2010: Lane's office and Don's insights.
  7. His first game as a Met was marked by two noteworthy occurrences: 1) The triple play scene used in The Odd Couple was filmed before the game. 2) Wes Westrum outsmarted the Pirates when he sat on his knowledge of a slipup in their lineup card versus the one posted until it could help him. Then he pounced and got a couple of their runs taken off the board. Welcome to New York, Dennis Bennett. And RIP now.
  8. 1. 74-88, with alternating dollops of Pollyannish BS when they play well and overwrought doom and gloom when they don't filling the Metscape 2. 5th place, because I can't quite picture anybody in this division crumbling enough to let us have fourth The revised playoff structure hasn't expanded enough to include the 2012 Mets given the above parameters.
  9. In another scene from Friends With Benefits, Mila stands in front of one those phone booth ads (ironically talking on a cell phone) from 2010 that featured "ACE" Johan Santana as something WE BELIEVE in.
  10. It would be appropriate if the Mets hold a farewell ceremony on the Braves' last visit in, September 9, at Shea's home plate marker...and maybe throw some non-lethal object at his coconut.
  11. In the 2011, uh, comedy Friends With Benefits, Justin Timberlake and the impossibly hot (until she speaks the movie's lines, dialogue designed to make the most attractive person repellent) Mila Kunis take a break from having "benefits" during a "wow, they're some 'friends'!" montage to watch Jose Reyes hit one out of Citi Field -- toward the Pepsi Porch -- on TV and high-five. We see Jose round the bases..."he's not the only one scoring!"...and the apple rise..."I'll bet that's not the only thing going up!" Actually, I would bet those jokes are in the director's cut. *** Citi Field shows up in Morgan Spurlock's Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold as part of a segment on how stadiums and arenas are all sponsored these days (the documentary's conceit is he's making a movie and everything about it is up for sale).

  13. SNY promo in the same vein. Beautiful in so many ways, though two not quite as beautiful things caught my notice: 1) In an effort to paint the Mets in blue and eschew the black (only Niese is seen in black; I saw an alternate cut in which Matt Harvey was used in that spot), the Piazza era exists only in one still photo. And no glimpse of Franco in his HOF year? I'm always fascinated at how history is cut and recut. 2) Gorgeous shot of the last swing at Shea Stadium...but who wants to think how that ended? Still, Amazin' work. John Stearns, for cryin' out loud.

  15. I dreamt Mike Pelfrey died as a result of freebasing on a train. So compared to that, his outing today was pretty good.
  16. The DH sucks. Fuck it.
  17. (All but one of) The Marlins suck. Fuck them.
  18. Pettitte sucks. Fuck him.
  19. Nationals suck. Fuck them.
  20. Braves suck. Fuck them.
  21. Phillies suck. Fuck them.

  23. The Yankees have signed Pettitte to a one-year minor league deal, according to the YES Network's Jack Curry, who reports the deal is worth $2.5 million. Pettitte, 39, had been in camp as a special guest instructor. At that time, he admitted that being around the Yankees might raise the temptation of a comeback. How suggestible is this guy anyway?
  24. Ex-Met players who went on to play in Japan (partial through 2011; Chris Carter and Lastings Milledge slated to play in Japan in 2012): Benny Agbayani Chris Aguila Edgardo Alfonzo George Altman Mike Birkbeck Bruce Boisclair Craig Brazell Brian Buchanan Mark Carreon Chris Donnels Matt Franco Mike Fyhrie Wayne Garrett Shawn Gilbert Dicky Gonzalez Ike Hampton Jason Hardtke Mike Hessman Eric Hillman Darrin Jackson Jason Jacome Mike Kinkade Luis Lopez Bob MacDonald Barry Manuel Jim Marshall Mike Marshall (1B) Felix Millan Kevin Mitchell C.J. Nitkowski Jon Nunnally Alex Ochoa Tom O'Malley Andy Phillips Gary Rajsich Jerrod Riggan Don Schulze Shane Spencer Ryan Thompson Kelvin Torve Eric Valent Pete Walker Dave West Don Zimmer
  25. From Japan: Lastings Milledge doesn't like the food (though he might be known as a food product himself). Chris Carter and his balky knee enjoy the supportive atmosphere. And more than forty former Mets have preceded them as gaijin over there.
