  1. Xk_FR3341bA Either I'm growing soft in his and my old age or I definitively hate the also-ran Phillies more than I fully embrace the possibility of a second consecutive Brave Wild Card collapse. It can't be third place being on the line. Maybe it's all three. Anyway, when I heard that the game that had been PHI 7 ATL 3 (and had me thinking, "yeah, but four runs isn't that much) went final as ATL 8 PHI 7 and learned how it got that way...well, respect for Public Enemy Number Shea. ATLANTA -- Chipper Jones rounded third base, took one look at his grinning teammates surrounding home plate and flung his batting helmet into the air before jumping into the welcoming party. The moment Jones said he'll savor in retirement came after a dramatic homer that can help his chances of one more postseason. Jones hit a three-run homer off Jonathan Papelbon with two outs in the ninth inning, capping a five-run rally that sent the Atlanta Braves over the Philadelphia Phillies 8-7 on Sunday. The switch-hitting Jones was swinging as a left-handed hitter when he saw three straight fastballs from Papelbon. Jones pulled the third pitch deep into the right-field seats. Then came the celebration every player cherishes -- none more than the 40-year-old Jones, who is retiring after the season. "In that mob scene at the plate, you kind of get lost in it, time kind of stands still," Jones said. "You're not really thinking about any of that other stuff. You're just thrilled that you won a game. "Nothing beats that. That's as good as it gets."

  4. Putting aside Sherman's need to generate buzz and the very real possibility that as the "national" baseball writer for the Post his insights may be a mile wide and an inch deep, I found this the money passage of his column: And though the Mets have Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler, they are not overly populated with high-end youngsters. If you suggest Jeurys Familia, Wilmer Flores, etc., then you just have Mets-colored glasses. Every team has prospects of that level. Harvey and Wheeler are distinct. I don't want to write off anybody before they arrive, but I'm kind of thinking that "every team" bit carries some merit to it. I'm also intrigued that he threw Niese into his trade pile. Counterintuitive to a young, building team but if he can yield more in return -- and he's reasonably priced for others, not just us -- then it's something to think about (probably because I must admit I've thought about it). Hell, everything is something to think about. Doesn't mean you'd do it, but it's September and we're out of it again.

  7. On Disc 10 (the "50 Greatest Players" part), on bonus materials, you will find a selection titled "Origins of a Franchise." That is adapted from the film that runs in a loop when you visit the Mets Museum & HOF -- I wrote the script (most of which remained intact through the 2010 editing process). So when you watch it and hear Gary Cohen talk about how there's no such thing as a "casual" Mets fan, et al, that's mostly my doing. I had no idea it would show up there, received no additional compensation for it and am unbilled in the package and on the disc, so you might say it's my claim to obscurity. But I did write it, and I'm quite thrilled to discovered it landed in this handsome package.

  13. Evil Fucker Grant was running the show pre-Linda's one year at the helm. He was not a Mays fan (or a fan of anybody, one supposes) and would have done nothing to cement the late Mrs. Payson's wishes. Mays and Mantle signed with Bally's separately but were reinstated by Ueberroth simultaneously. Best thing he ever did as commissioner.
  14. I didn't realize there was a crippling shortage of uniform numbers. By all means, get 8 and 24 on somebody's back pronto!

  19. Anybody remember Adam Greenberg? He was the Cub who came up for the first time in the majors on July 9, 2005, and was immediately plunked, suffering a concussion and thus ending his big league career. Or did it? The guy behind Catching Hell is leading the charge to get Greenberg another shot -- or One At Bat, as the campaign is titled. Wrote about it here, follow within for links to the film of Adam's story and petition to get him his second first chance if so inclined.

  21. The real deal! Mine came today. Was just in conference with it before realizing I'll have to go on corporate retreat with it. Thanks to bmfc1 for shining a spotlight on this offer. He's a funny guy. (Funny how? Funny like severely discounted box set funny.)
