  2. Co-owner Bill Maher high on his investment. Maher is a true player who puts his money where his mouth is, and that includes Major League Baseball. In 2012 he invested in a piece of Mets ownership. And not just to be able to toke in the owners' box. "I'm hopeful for the Mets this year," he says. "I think they've got a couple of key players. I think [Curtis] Granderson's going to have a big year. And Bartolo Colon, I think is a good steady influence on the pitching staff and they have very powerful pitching. I mean, when you have a pitching staff like they could have ... when they get back ... Matt Harvey, I think he can be in every game. If they get a little luck with the offense, they could just surprise some people." We asked him about the high life of a major league owner. "You have your own box when you're an owner," Maher said. "I mean, when I go to the games, so far I've stayed in my box. But, you can also sit right down on field level and I'm probably going to do that. I'm going to go back to an owner's meeting in June and I think they're playing the Braves that night, and I want to sit, like, really, really close to the field." Ballclub co-owner, writer, intelligent talker, Maher is a true renaissance man for this marijuana millennium. But, unlike some decriminalization intellectuals, this guy practices what he preaches. He smokes weed. And he breaks down boundaries doing it. Important boundaries. Like putting Matt Harvey in every game?

Koblin and I spent 45 minutes lamenting how much the Mets were sucking and sucking the life out of us. Little did we know the hangover from 2007 was just beginning.

  12. Xwy-CPaXgOc Thanks all. Fab work from sharpie (whose talents are worthy of more Grammys than his namesakes the collected in their heyday) and those who were on hand in the first round. Novel and appropriate concept from batmags, whose execution of this and the previous parodistic contest deserves its own round of applause. Happy 50th, Lads and Shea, wherever you are!

  16. Superlative job by David Jordan in this Tommy Davis-bylined recollection of life as a Met in 1967. Did we lose 101 games? We sure did. But when you put good, young players on the field every day, theyre either goin to the bank or theyre goin to school. There was a lot of learning at Shea in 1967, but the difference between the early years and 67, the good players stopped making the same mistakes. Thats when you know its working. Some nights I would drive home from the game to my mothers house in Brooklyn where I lived that season and the most delicious fish dinner was waiting for me on the kitchen counter. Some nights wed be in midtown at the fancier hotel bars meeting an opposing player from out of town, bartenders at steakhouses in beige dinner jackets, old-school. Then thered be Monday nights after a game - I would get changed in the clubhouse, give the beat guys like Jack Lang and Dick Young a quote or two to help keep them fed, and then this would be waiting for me at The Vanguard downtown. 18. Lea pitched a no-hitter in 1981, same week Barker pitched his perfecto, same year that the season was shortened and thus I decided 33 years later the no-hitter was shortened. The conflation express rides again!

  20. I believe it was Charlie Lea with the five-inning deal. Don't think we heard from Rogers or Koufax, but neither was much missed. Program really got the tension of one of these things across. Found myself rooting for results to occur that I already knew happened. Except for the MFY pitchers, of course.

  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I decided that there were three more Yankee records I wanted to see broken in my lifetime: Gehrig's consecutive game streak, Maris' 61 homers, and DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak. Two of the three have fallen. Be nice if Syndergaard could take down Jack Chesbro, too.
  24. NBC was the Monday Night Baseball network in those days. ABC didn't come along until 1976.
  25. Rickey, Ripken mentioned above.
