  2. Gwreck wrote: They can't control years when the Yankees also finish first. Save for some Interleague high jinks, absolutely true. Still, wishing the Mets well and the MFYs ill is a 360-degree endeavor. Hats off to Toronto for doing their part.

  4. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Couldn't care less about the no-no ... was more concerned about Seaver's 10 straight K's record. Thank you, Curtis. As far as maintaining Met distinctions, I'll take preserving this one over the never a no-hitter thrown by.
  5. 1969 1971 1972 1973 1984 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 2015 Those are years in which the Mets finished or will finish with both the better regular-season record and the higher divisional standing than the MFYs. (Not lasting longer in the postseason would kind of take the shine off this accomplishment.)
  6. Max Scherzer's no-hitter a footnote to the real history: Kelly Johnson becomes the fifth Met to play third base for the first time in 2015, and only the second to do so in October. Why yes, Alex Trevio was the first to it, on October 1, 1978, the final day of that regular season. Last time the Mets "broke in" this many third basemen in one season? 2000, also the last time the Mets went to the World Series. You're welcome. 158. Kelly Johnson 10/03/2015 157. 7. Gonna have to be a shared record at best. Armando gets out of this jam like he used to sometimes get out of some jams.

Mets issue statement that "prognosis is good," which is what they said about Zack Wheeler missing his start in March, but let's hope that since they're not doing the doctoring, that it's very true. Adds that he and his family wish Rusty's privacy be respected during this period, which one assume has something to do with the guy trying to raise funds. He went through an episode last winter. All best to the redhead.
  13. Robbie Erlin (1-1 6.30) takes on Zack Greinke (18.3 1.68). I'm sure neither of those records is indicative of the pitchers' respective abilities. The important thing, from a history-preserving standpoint, is Greinke could throw a complete game shutout and his ERA still won't beat Doc's from 1985. As for home field, just win, Mets.

  15. Matz and Uribe reportedly not healing like crazy. Also, Wilmer has strep throat (but it's sure nice talking to you, Dad, it's sure nice talking to you...).
  16. No game tonight. Day-night doubleheader Saturday. 1:10 for makeup, 7:10 for regularly scheduled night affair.
  17. O's bang their MFY matchup as well.
  18. Our final Temporary Other Favorite Team of the regular season: the San Diego Padres. Casey Kelly vs. Alex Wood at place we don't want to see until a week from Monday, 10:10 tonight.
  19. A. Rubin suggests Mets leaning toward an early postponement (or bang, as they say in the trade). Marlins @ Phillies already banged (or postponed, as humans say) 90 or so miles south.
  20. For a game that might not get played, we have a surfeit of threads.

  22. The Mets' regular-season high-water mark for 2015 will rise no higher than 22 games above .500, most recently reached on September 27, when their record was 89-67. They will need to sweep the Nationals this weekend to match it. In a related note, assuming the Mets don't experience a cancellation, they will finish with a record they've had before, whether it's 89-73 (2008); 90-72 (1984); 91-71 (1990); or 92-70 (1987). Unlike this year, none of those iterations was good enough for the postseason.
  23. There is one word that sums up the weather forecast for the weekend: You never know. RIP, one Joaquin. Go away, other Joaquin. Start winning again, Mets. You never know when it will come in handy again. Sure you do -- next Friday. Refamiliarize yourself with the concept this Friday.
