  4. Met pitcher, Met manager. Will be remembered most fondly in the Delaware Valley.
  5. Shea's third league promptly was forgotten. But he had what he wanted anyway: a team for New York. He also had the person to put up the money for it. From out of Shea's old Continental League lineup came the owner of the New York National League team. Her name: Mrs. Charles Shipman Payson. She is Bill Shea's style. A lot of other people's, too, because this is one helluva lady.

  11. Per DiComo this AM: More Mets cuts: RHP Ben Rowen OF Travis Taijeron IF Gavin Cecchini IF Matt Reynolds RHP Erik Goeddel Mets have 42 players left in camp.

  14. Take the thing about Elio Chacon. One day the Mets proudly announced that Chacon had handled 95 chances at shortstop without an error. As a rule, errorless streaks for infielders are not mentioned until the man has made 225 plays or so. But the Mets' publicity department did not have this kind of time.
  15. 4 Matt Ginter, for whom I held moderate hopes after a vaguely promising Met debut

  18. 7 Nothing says disposable in May 1998 like Rick Wilkins.
  19. I believe 8 is Darren Oliver.
  20. The 1985-89 MVP guy from yesterday must then be Randy Myers.
  21. RIP Jimmy Breslin, 88, as important a voice in establishing the Met legend as anyone. And a whole other career besides. https://www.google.com/amp/s/mobile.nytimes.com/2017/03/19/business/media/jimmy-breslin-dead-ny-columnist-author.amp.html On any page of still the most essential of Met volumes, something worth quoting. The Mets are a part of life. You can start keeping track of time with them.
  22. Can't believe I slept through the celebratory fifes and drums that surely raised a patriotic ruckus from coast to coast through the wee hours of the morning. The USA wins at its national pastime. Do you believe in eventualities?
  23. 4 sounds like Wayne Housie, who lined up on Opening Day to my utter surprise, as in "Who?"
  24. 5 Mauro "Goose" Gozzo
  25. 6 Rick Parker
