  1. Condolences, Lou. Sounds like a good, long life for your mom. Sorry to hear about Mr. Moore. Bob Murphy always touted him as a prospect, and here we are remembering him as a Met. Pretty good.
  2. Koppett added Dick Young picked the Mets to finish second, and was "chided again for being carried away by loyalty to the Mets."
  3. I see there's a Tommy Moore who died in November in Tennessee, but that Tommy Moore was born in 1956, or well after the Mets' Tommy Moore. I haven't otherwise come across anything regarding the ballplayer and still have him marked as not dead at the present time.
  4. Leonard Koppett addressed expectations in his 1970 franchise history The New York Mets: The Whole Story. As for the full season, well -- everyone knew that the Cardinals would run away and hide from the rest of the Eastern Division. Their only conceivable challenge would come from Durocher's Cubs. Montreal, of course, would be last. So the Mets had to fight it out with Pittsburgh and Philadelphia for third place. They should certainly beat Philadelphia, since the Mets looked stronger and Philadelphia weaker than in 1968, when the margin between them was only three games. And Pittsburgh, which had finished only seven games ahead of the Mets, had injury, age, and other problems. Fourth place, therefore, could be called the legitimate expectation and third place a reasonable aspiration for the Mets. Fifth would be a bitter disappointment and sixth a disaster.

  6. I assume bmfc1 was chosen because IfIWereBobCarpenter wouldn't register.
  7. Braves radio guy Ben Ingram is being played by Hank Azaria as Jim Brockmire, except I think he's sober.
  8. Edward Emil Kranepool in a taxi, honey.
  9. And we're back in the present. Chris Flexen is on...the mound, I mean.
  10. SNY also reporting Craig Swan's competitive fires still burned in 1982 and DiamondVision was rookie scoreboard of the year.
  11. SNY rain delay programming reporting Mookie Wilson looked very good in 1982.
  12. Start the pretend games early, get the injuries out of the way early. Brilliant strategy. Plenty of time to heal.
  13. I had the pleasure of attending Chris Flexen's first major league win, at Citi Field, last August 8. The Mets pinned the loss on A.J. Griffin, who was a late insert as starter, replacing Andrew Cashner. I remember being delighted the Mets were facing someone who, in several ways, looked like one of their 2017 starting pitchers. And now he's only a phone call and five-hour flight away.
  14. As noted on today's telecast -- and as was the answer in a Fan Appreciation contest last September -- Jack was the last Met pitcher to belt a grand slam. Started and won the game that gave the Mets their very first .500 record, a complete game five-hitter at Shea over the newly situated Atlanta Braves, April 16, 1966. Singled and scored in the bottom of the eighth, went out and finished off the Braves in the top of the ninth. Mets were 1-1. They'd move to above break-even the next day and take up residence in not last place that year, which was quite the move.
  15. Occasionally the Mets bring in guys coming off 18-win seasons. Or guys who have 18-win seasons in their past. Jason Vargas is the hook for this exploration of the subject.
  16. METS TRUMP THE SHARK
  17. Benjamin Grimm wrote: One was in Room 222 from 1969 to 1974, the other came over in 1981 and failed to bat .222.
  18. First major league homer came in his first game as a major league left fielder vs Kansas City, the game after which Syndergaard denied that he had a bone spur (though he did). If only Reynolds could have been confined to intermittent cameos/recurring debuts, I'd remember him fondly. A little exposure convinced me he's a modern-day Ron Gardenhire -- can do many things, none of them well. Maybe he has a heckuva managerial career ahead of him c. 2038.

  20. Tom Verducci's still got it, it being a revolting crush on Derek Jeter. Jeter, dressed in a crisp blue suit and white shirt open at the neck, is standing in the dugout of Marlins Park, which is dramatically lit for "dinner on the Diamond," a January function for about 150 potential business partners, sponsors and season-ticket holders. [...] Jeter, as DiMaggio did, evokes a casual elegance and commands any space he enters, even one this big.
  21. Collin Cowgill has a minor league deal with the Phillies.
  22. I'm just glad Frazier isn't Moustakas.
  23. I too am a Mets forum poster with a bobblehead: Have Ben Grimm and the thumb guy ever been seen together at the same game?
  24. Frayed Knot wrote: 41Forever wrote: I don't get the obsession with the thumbs down guy in the tabs. The thing was that the Yanqui team picked up on it and so a whole dugout full of guys giving their own teammate the 'thumbs down' signal after a big hit became the thing to do over the second half of the season. So basically the Tabs are merely reflecting a trend that all started with Frazier, not creating one on their own. The thumb guy is not only a Mets fan but a talented and prolific photographer whose baseball work is a staple on other (gasp!) Mets boards. One of us, so to speak.
