1. 95_SvOPSfJc Vargas has spunk...and will knock the fuck out any bro who suggests otherwise. Martín Perez will start for the Twins and explain he's not related to the New Republic guy.
2. What were the odds entering 2019 that Wilmer Font would make it to the Schaefer Circle of Sports before Edwin Diaz?
3. All right, Matz, consider this first inning the second.
4. 1. Jorge Polanco SS 2. Marwin Gonzalez RF 3. Nelson Cruz DH 4. Eddie Rosario LF 5. C.J. Cron 1B 6. Max Kepler CF 7. Miguel Sano 3B 8. Jonathan Schoop 2B 9. Jason Castro C
5. McNeil RF Conforto CF Alonso 1B Canó 2B Ramos C D. Smith LF Frazier 3B J.D. Davis DH (yeech) Rosario SS
6. Jerry seems to think he saw the Mets play the Padres in 1967. Now that's a magic loogie.
7. Jeff McNeil wins the Mets Heart and Hustle Award. It honors active players who "demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit and traditions of the game". It is voted on by MLB alumni. Every team gets one and then an overall winner is announced after the season.
8. Font's card is Fontastic.
9. McNeil winning both Player awards. He can do it all!
10. With Wheeler on the IL, future lights-out closer for somebody else Jacob Rhame returns to haunt our dreams.
11. Truly Amazin' (or Amaysing) moments in Mets lore reflected in each entrant. A year later, both players would be part of teams that would go far.
12. Hansel Robles is 3-0 with 14 saves for the Angels.
13. The Mariners have released Triple-A pitcher Jon Niese.
14. Comedian at Citi Field Getting Howie. I can't stress enough how good these longform One on One interviews Howie Rose does for the Mets YouTube channel are. There are a bunch with different Mets alumni. This is the first with a Met-Lovin' Big Shot, and they don't get much more MLBS than Jerry Seinfeld.
15. Td'A 3 HR 2nite @ MFYS III. Rays win!!
16. Before that, I was all about my blue suede Clyde Pumas... I didn't give up my height-of-fashion Clydes (or their temporary fill-in Spaldings) until they were well, well out of style, though before they came back in as nostalgia kicks (Mariah Carey wore them in the "Dreamlover" video). Put on my first pair of Pumas while Carter was running against Ford and didn't take off my last one until after Bush defeated Dukakis. If I'm anything, it's brand-loyal.
17. Three of Joe's eight UMDB Memories are from family. Touching to see nephew and son weigh in.
18. aXJhDltzYVQ Minneapolis has the Twins, but we're going for triplets winwise. Zack Wheeler will endeavor to keep the elevator from bringing us down. Michael Pineda will punch a higher floor where his ERA is concerned.
19. Honestly, I thought, “he was a Met, wasn't he?” and then decided I was imagining it. I think I just got another one of his cards, though.
20. 1967 Met for 11 games, every one of them a loss. Yet he surely deserves a thread of his own.
21. It's 1969 and a young reporter is on the Mets beat.
22. Joe Grzenda, 82, threw the last pitch in Washington Senators history and appeared in every third pack of baseball cards I ever bought.
