  1. And here's what the rule book says: A manager or coach is considered to have concluded his visit to the mound when he leaves the 18-foot circle surrounding the pitchers rubber. I guess the umpire ruled correctly.
  2. I would have thought so too. It's kind of a spirit-of-the-law/letter-of-the-law thing here. I'd have to see the rule as written, but my impulse would have been to rule in the Dodgers' favor on this one.
  3. Ceetar wrote: I thought Blanco was the Backup actually. hm. You might be right. I may have conflated the two catchers.
  4. I think I read that Jerry said he'd use Thole or Bay at third in an emergency. Did anyone else see that? Or am I hallucinating?

  10. The Hulk has had so many different incarnations in the comics. The Hulk who was in the original Avengers was more of a social misfit/Mr. Hyde kind of guy, not the mindless rampaging "Hulk smash" guy who came along later, and who the movie Hulk is more closely based on. It's really hard to imagine the movie version of the Hulk sitting around a big shiny conference room table with Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and Hawkeye.

  12. It seems that whenever we pound this drum, the Mets go on an eight-game winning streak.
  13. Yup, it's Roger McDowell. And now it's time for me to lift the curtain. All of the above information, and more, is now at your eager fingertips: Mets Walkoff Wins and Losses All 762 of them!
  14. Orosco... Sisk... Very close...
  15. He was a Met who arrived after Pete Falcone left, and left before Dennis Cook arrived. Falcone, by the way, was on the mound for only one Mets walkoff; a bases-loaded walk to future coach Bill Robinson, then with the Phillies, on 6/25/82.
  16. Not Benitez, but it was a Mets pitcher.
  17. FUN FACT: The Mets actually have a winning record (116-115) on games that have ended in a home run! (There aren't many "since 1962" categories in which the Mets have a winning record, so this was a nice discovery.) NEW TRIVIA QUESTION: Only one Mets game has ever ended with a balk. Who was the pitcher charged with that balk?
  18. Lotsa Schaefer closure tomorrow, as all four games from this past weekend's near-sweep against the Giants will close some time on Wednesday morning. 20. Wait... hold on while I look up the answers...
  21. I'd prefer to hang on to Thole's small sample size (and the .500 batting average) over Barajas' large sample size. (Isn't he hitting .180 over the last seven weeks or so?) Combine that with Thole having more of a potential future than Barajas, I'd much rather see him stick. If we're going to have two catchers, I'd prefer them to be Blanco and Thole.
  22. From September 3, 1979: EXPOS 10TH: Dawson popped to first; Staub doubled to left; SCOTT RAN FOR STAUB; Valentine reached on a fielder's choice [scott scored (error by Flynn; assists by Allen and Hebner) (unearned)]; 1 R (0 ER), 1 H, 1 E, 1 LOB. Mets 5, Expos 6. Is it possible that the grounder deflected off pitcher Neil Allen, then deflected off third baseman Richie Hebner, and was then fielded by second baseman Doug Flynn who made the game-ending error? Or maybe this was a bunt play; Allen fielded the ball, threw to Hebner at third to get the lead runner, but was too late. Hebner then threw to Flynn (who was covering first because of the bunt) who dropped the throw, allowing Scott to score. I find it hard to believe, though, that Ellis Valentine, in 1979, would be bunting with one out and the winning run on second base.
  23. I guess not; the out was made and the double play was completed. But something has to account for Cash scoring from third. I think an error would have been warranted.
