  1. Unless I'm forgetting someone, the only Rule 5 player I can think of who the Mets managed to keep was Pedro Beato, and the only one they permanently lost was Jesus Flores.
  2. Wow. He'll have a hard time fitting in with the other ballplayers.
  3. I'm thinking that Sean Gilmartin may be that "lefty for the pen"
  4. So Verrett was the only one the Mets lost in the major-league portion, and the others (Maron, Peavey, etc.) went in the minor league portion. The rules are the same, though, right? Peavey has to stay on the Twins big-league roster all year, or be offered back to the Mets?
  5. How often do Rule 5 players stay with the team that selected them? I remember years ago, they almost always got sent back before the season ended. I sense that that's not so much the case anymore.
  6. SAN DIEGO The Los Angeles Dodgers continued their makeover Thursday morning by agreeing on a deal that will send outfielder Matt Kemp to the San Diego Padres, a high-ranking official with direct knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports.
  7. Well, he also has a bridge. He used to have a bowling alley, but I just did some Googling and it appears the Gil Hodges Lanes is now Strike 10 Lanes. (Stupid bowling alley; ideally you want 13 strikes in a game, although getting 10 strikes would still give you a very good score.)
  8. If they trade Syndergaard, I want them to at least get someone as good as Victor Zambrano.
  9. Adam Rubin wrote: SAN DIEGO -- The Mets are aggressively shopping Dillon Gee to teams in need of a starting pitcher, a high-ranking source at the winter meetings told ESPNNewYork.com. The Mets have publicly acknowledged they plan to trade a starting pitcher with Matt Harvey returning, with the candidates being Jonathon Niese, Gee and Bartolo Colon. A source said the Mets are actively peddling Gee more than the other starters, though. Gee is under the Mets' control for two more seasons and is projected to earn roughly $5 million in 2015. The Kansas City Royals are believed to be among the teams approached by the Mets. Meanwhile, Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com reports that the Texas Rangers plan to meet with the Mets at the winter meetings regarding Gee and Niese.

  11. Assuming that one of these guys gets traded, which one would you least like to see depart?
  12. Assuming that one of these guys gets traded, who would you rather see it be?

  14. That he finished as low as he did? Or as high as he did?
  15. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Fail. Maybe. Whatever. Once again, Schaefer is not meant to be a scientific way of evaluating player performances. It's just for fun, a revival of something from the 1970's. Or... you can think of it as a cumulative stat. Colon led the team in Schaefer points, just like he did in innings pitched. Sure, deGrom had a better year, but you wouldn't give him the Innings Pitched title, would you?
  16. Yes, that would be correct. Daniel Murphy was a bench player of the month a few times, but not in 2013, the year he was Player of the Year. Wright, Reyes, and Santana were never bench players of the month.
  17. THE SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2014 PLAYER OF THE YEAR The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year for 2014 is first-time winner LUCAS DUDA. Duda led the Mets in 2014 in multiple categories: Home runs (30), runs batted in (92), on base percentage (.349), slugging percentage (.481), OPS (.830) and total bases (247). This is only the second time that the leading Schaefer vote getter had fewer than 100 points. (David Wright had the lowest total for Schaefer winners, with 91.72 points in 2009.) Still, Lucas managed to finish 19.20 points ahead of runner-up Curtis Granderson. (That's right! Curtis Granderson finished in second place!) PREVIOUS WINNERS: 2005 - David Wright, 140.17*; 2006 - David Wright, 121.16; 2007 - David Wright, 124.77; 2008 - Johan Santana, 121.37; 2009 - David Wright, 91.72; 2010 - David Wright, 117.56; 2011 - José Reyes, 104.96; 2012 - David Wright, 113.06; 2013 - Daniel Murphy, 107.30. * Totals were higher in 2005 because of a rule specifying that ten points were to be awarded for each game. PITCHER OF THE YEAR The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Year is also a first-time winner, BARTOLO COLON, who led the Mets in wins with 15 and in innings pitched with 202.1. His 4.09 ERA trailed Jon Niese (3.40) and Zack Wheeler (3.54), the only other two Mets pitchers who threw enough innings to qualify. This competition was very close, and the winner wasn't determined until the final week of the season. Colon finished only 0.79 points ahead of Wheeler, who was only 0.28 points ahead of Niese. Jacob deGrom, who finished fourth among pitchers, was only 4.19 points behind Colon, which means that that last skipped start definitely cost deGrom a chance at the title. PREVIOUS WINNERS: 2005 - Pedro Martinez, 120.68*; 2006 - Tom Glavine, 80.26; 2007 - Tom Glavine, 75.97; 2008 - Johan Santana, 121.37; 2009 - Johan Santana, 84.61; 2010 - Johan Santana, 90.42; 2011 - R.A. Dickey, 69.40; 2012 - R.A. Dickey, 110.12; 2013 - Matt Harvey, 86.68. * Totals were higher in 2005 because of a rule specifying that ten points were to be awarded for each game. RELIEF PITCHER OF THE YEAR The Mets Relief Pitcher of the Year is yet another first-time winner, CARLOS TORRES. Carlos pitched 73 games in 2014, all but one in relief, and 35.74 of his 39.19 Schaefer points were earned from the bullpen. His only competition for the title was from Jeurys Familia, who finished 2.48 points behind Torres. Jenrry Mejia was third, with 25.56 points from the bullpen, and Vic Black (15.77) was fourth. PREVIOUS WINNERS: 2006 - Billy Wagner, 40.39; 2007 - Aaron Heilman, 34.86; 2008 - Aaron Heilman, 34.50; 2009 - Francisco Rodriguez, 38.58; 2010 - Hisanori Takahashi 28.69; 2011 - Pedro Beato, 25.93; 2012 - Bobby Parnell, 29.01; 2013 - LaTroy Hawkins, 32.30. BENCH PLAYER OF THE YEAR The Bench Player of the Year is also a first-time winner, ERIC CAMPBELL. Eric earned 5.89 points in games in which he did not start, ahead of Lucas Duda (4.56), Chris Young (4.03) and Kirk Nieuwenhuis (3.99). PREVIOUS WINNERS: 2006 - Julio Franco, 7.16; 2007 - Marlon Anderson, 10.39; 2008 - Damion Easley, 5.06; 2009 - Fernando Tatis, 8.37; 2010 - Chris Carter, 9.28; 2011 - Scott Hairston, 8.77; 2012 - Jordany Valdespin, 13.84; 2013 - Jordany Valdespin, 8.70. The only Mets players who did not earn any Schaefer points in 2014 were Bobby Parnell and Wilfredo Tovar. SCHAEFER METS PLAYER OF THE WEEK, 2014 Week ending April 5: Juan Lagares, 5.68 points. 18. G-Fafif wrote: "All right, I shut down deGrom. Now you go keep up your end." --Terry Collins to Lucas Duda, one week ago. Until I tallied those last three games this morning, I had thought that Wilmer Flores would be the one to sneak ahead of deGrom, but Duda came on strong. I assume that deGrom didn't have a Schaefer clause in his contract; if he does, he has a legitimate beef!

  21. Watch for tomorrow's big announcement of the 2014 Schaefer Mets Players of the Year, which will conclude the tenth season of Schaefer activity.
  22. SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, SEPTEMBER 2014 The Schaefer Mets Player of the Month for September 2014 is third-time winner LUCAS DUDA. Lucas came on strong the last two games of the month to snatch the title away from Jacob deGrom. Duda hit four homers in September and drove in 16 runs. (.264/.381/.460) The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Month is also a three-time winner, JACOB DEGROM. In four September starts, Jacob was 2-0 with a 1.67 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 27 innings. The Schaefer Mets Relief Pitcher of the Month is CARLOS TORRES, for the third time this season and fourth time overall. He is getting dangerously close to Brian Stokes territory. Carlos pitched in 15 games in September, and was 3-1 with a 2.00 ERA in 18 innings. The Schaefer Mets Bench Player of the Month for September is a first-time winner, ANTHONY RECKER. It wasn't a big month for bench players. Anthony won with a mere 1.38 points (largely as a result of a pinch-homer early in the month), but that was enough to put him ahead of Eric Young (0.29 points), Bobby Abreu (0.17), Ruben Tejada (0.08) and Eric Campbell (0.04). Updated award winner standings, with this month's winners in bold: PLAYER OF THE MONTH David Wright 14 Johan Santana 6 Carlos Beltran 5 Jose Reyes 5 R. A.
