New York Mets Minor League Report: Dakota Hawkins Perfect, Brooklyn's No-Hit Bid Falls One Out Short

Back in 2024, Dakota Hawkins started the first nine-inning no-hitter in Brooklyn Cyclones history. On Thursday, he was the Cyclones' starter again as the franchise made a run at no-no No. 2. Alas, he didn't become a part of history.

Wilmington's Miguel Villaroel broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the ninth, lacing a triple to right-center field off Juan Arnaud. The Blue Rocks got a two-run single from Ronny Cruz two batters later to spoil Brooklyn's shutout bid. The Cyclones did manage to grab the win, 11-2.

Hawkins had the Cyclones pursuing perfection before he handed the game over to the bullpen. He retired all 18 batters he faced, striking out five. One of the outs came on a nifty fielding play by the right-hander.

Cristofer Gomez came on for the seventh and promptly walked his first batter, Eli Willits. But he and Ryan Dollar did keep the no-hit bid intact.

The 26-year-old Hawkins was making his seventh start of the year for the Cyclones. He's in his fourth pro season -- and third season with Brooklyn -- after signing with the New York Mets as an undrafted free agent in 2023 out of Washington State University. His 2026 numbers aren't bad: a 3.35 ERA and 3.45 K:BB ratio in 43 innings pitched. Now, he can build upon this game.

Elsewhere in the organization:

Syracuse lost to Norfolk, 5-4 in 10 innings. Ryan Clifford's solo home run tied the game in the eighth. Starter Jonah Tong battled to get through five innings.

Binghamton scored four runs in the sixth, three of them coming on Matt Rudick’s home run, as it defeated Hartford, 7-3. RJ Gordon earned his first win of the season.

St. Lucie was sloppy all around in a 15-3 loss to Jupiter. The Mets made five errors and allowed 17 hits. Shortstop Elian Pena committed one of the miscues. It was his 18th error of the season.

The FCL Mets were blanked, 8-0, by the FCL Nationals. Veteran outfielder Mike Tauchman (knee) made his second rehab appearance with the club. He left the game in the fourth inning after being hit by a pitch.

DSL Mets Orange fell, 14-4, to DSL Arizona Red. Mets pitchers allowed 12 walks. Shortstop Wandy Asigen committed his fourth error in six games.

Clifford's Big Game Not Enough In Syracuse Loss

Ryan Clifford homered for the second night in a row to cap a three-RBI night.

He got the Mets on the board in the first with a two-run double. The 22-year-old has now hit safely in five consecutive games and six of his seven games in July. He's up to 16 long balls for the season as he works to make himself New York's first baseman of the future, but the full-season numbers don't merit a promotion. He sports a 685 OPS and 36.2 percent strikeout rate.

Tong labored through another middling start. He allowed four runs on four hits, with three walks and eight strikeouts. He threw 92 pitches, 53 for strikes. This was his sixth start since being optioned back to Syracuse in early June. He has gone past five innings once.

Nick Morabito had two hits and an RBI. His single in the seventh cut the Mets' deficit to 4-3. Matt Turner took the loss after allowing a run-scoring single in the 10th.

Rudick Powers Binghamton Past Hartford

Rudick followed Kevin Parada's go-ahead RBI single with a game-breaking blast to right-center, giving the Rumble Ponies a 6-2 lead. It was Rudick's third home run for Binghamton this season.

The Ponies added an insurance run in the seventh. Chris Suero hit his second double of the game and Jose Ramos drove him in with a single.

Gordon finished one out shy of a quality start. He allowed three runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out five. Brian Metoyer recorded a hold with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, Justin Armbruester struck out all three batters he faced in the eighth, Saul Garcia closed out the win with a scoreless ninth.

Cyclones Give Hawkins Loads Of Support

Brooklyn hitters made Hawkins' night a lot easier as they staked him to a 4-0 lead in the first. John Bay popped a three-run shot with one out to open the scoring. The next batter, Daiverson Gutierrez, followed with a solo shot. Gutierrez finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

Mitch Voit had a huge night at the plate from the leadoff spot. He reached base in all five of his plate appearances with two hits, a walk and a hit by pitch, drove in three runs, and stole three bases. The No. 7 prospect on Grand Central Mets' Top-20 list is now up to 30 steals for the season. He's also sporting a .777 OPS.

Jimenez Has Up-And-Down Day For St. Lucie

First, the good from Antonio Jimenez: He hit his third home run in four games, a two-run shot in the third that put the Mets ahead, 2-1. He's 10-for-18 (.556) during his current four-game hitting streak. Now, the bad: He committed two throwing errors at third base. His first one came on a run-scoring fielder's choice in the bottom of the third. The misplay helped Jupiter put together a four-run inning and take the lead for good.

A throwing error by Peña on a potential double play in the fourth brought in two more Jupiter runs. Christian Rodriguez started and took the loss, allowing five runs and eight hits over three innings.

Jackson Hauge drove in the final St. Lucie run with a single in the fourth, scoring AJ Salgado. Peña, Branny De Oleo, and Francisco Toledo each collected two hits.
